FROM THE PRESIDENT’S PEN We need to update our Club roster so if anyone has moved, changed a phone number or email address, please contact Beverly Harding or me to update your information. If you’ve acquired or sold a Model A let us know that, too, we’d like to have a record of what old A’s our members are driving or working on if they’re in pieces! Our web site continues to grow change in nice ways thanks to Jerry Wilcox our web site liaison and Mike Horning (son of Club member Al Horning) our web master. Please take a look at it! If you have any suggestions, or photos of you and your Model A, please send them along. Note the radiator reminder in this newsletter. The joint tour to Norwich, and the car museum there, is coming up on Saturday April 13th; 17 cars (with conscious drivers) are registered for this tour. Sullivan Trail A’s and the Twin Tiers Vintage Car Club will be showing off their classy metal for this nice ride through smooth back roads on what everyone hopes will be a nice day. Ginny Bruckner sent out more information concerning rendezvous location and time; if you have questions or want to register late please contact Ginny directly. Membership dues were due at the end of the year; if you are not current with your membership dues PLEASE get the $10 membership fee to Treasurer Mark Harth as soon as feasible. We want you! Bob Harter has lost the keys to his pickup again so he’s having a key-finding party sometime in the future where Bill Haag will serve up funny stories; stay tuned for the date, place, and time. Oh, Bob ….. See you at the April meeting! All for now,

Jim

Candy’s Story, A Woman’s View of the Model A Hobby!

When I married Mike 25 years ago, I was introduced to his love of restoring vintage vehicles. He had already restored two and was working on one when we met. In fact, we met over a rear end axle for a 1920 White 2 Ton C Cab Truck. Yes, a rear end axle, I bet there aren't too many who can say that! Well the 2 Ton was a little too much so we started a 1927 Model T Ford Roadster. We raised it up as we raised our daughter up. It was definitely a family project and brought many good times and memories.

As Alison grew too big to fit between us in the Roadster, it was time to search for a family car with a back seat and a roof. A trip to Las Vegas and our search was over. Along came a 1929 Model A Ford Tudor Sedan, a perfect fit for the Martin family. So the work began and progress was slow because Alison needed a vehicle to drive to school. She wanted a truck and another search began. We found a pretty rough 1945 Ford Pickup and the work began. Alison and Candy learned many new things about cars including getting very dirty trying to squeeze under a truck that is 6" off the ground. The 11

th hour of being

finished came a few times but finally it was primered and off to school she went. To see the smile on her face the day she drove off to school was worth all the hard work. Her best trick at high school was setting off car alarms as she drove through the parking lots. Once Alison's truck was on the road the work on the Sedan began again. Many hours later and many trips to pick‐a‐part the Sedan was on the road for a year of driving. Road trips through the Kern Canyon, over the Grapevine and to the coast with the Bakersfield Model A Chapter proved she was very reliable! Now the hard work of replacing the wood, upholstering and painting has begun. I have learned to sandblast, connect distributor wires, scrape old paint and many other things while restoring vintage vehicles. The time I spend with Mike is precious and the many new friends we have made through our Model A Chapter has been a blessing in our lives. Five to Eight Frocks vs. Evening Dresses By Patti Jones

Courtesy: MAFCA web site

(From The Delineator, February 1930) The dinner dress is hard to distinguish from an evening dress during the Model A era. The three dresses on the left are dinner frocks, and the three on the right are evening frocks. It appears at first glance that a dinner frock has sleeves and the dinner dress is basically sleeveless.

The three dinner dresses on the left are described for those who have little use of an evening dress and they can all be worn for a late afternoon function. These three dresses are made in lace, georgette, and netting. Note that the center one has a higher hemline, which would definitely make it more of a dinner dress. One of the new “rages” this year is the bolero jacket (center) and the shorter sleeved net dress. The three evening dresses on the right are made of chiffon, taffeta, and netting. Note that the uneven hemline is still being used in early 1930 and a carryover from the 1929 styles, but are at the ankle. Just by looking at these three dresses and comparing them to the dinner dresses on the left, it appears there is more detailing of the fabric than the dinner dresses. The shirring on the first one, the flower accents on the 2nd and the different tiers and bow of the 3rd one show much more detailing and “finishing” of the evening dress.
