Katie Dunham, a former Woodhey High School pupil and Liam Mills, a former North Chadderton School pupil, are both undertaking the Level 2 Professional Cookery apprenticeship at Nutters Restaurant owned by celebrity chef Andrew Nutter. Enjoying their first taste of work within the catering industry, both Katie and Liam are developing a range of skills from a renowned, industry recognised chef. The two apprentices are responsible for preparing, producing and serving dishes whilst taking advice from one of the top chefs in the country. Liam said: “I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship and preparing foods such as lobsters, soups and parfait. Laura Coulter began her accounting career in September 2008 when she secured employment as an office junior at Anthony Marshall Ltd. Laura progressed through the levels and gained AAT Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications. In September 2011, upon completion of her apprenticeship qualifications, Laura began studying towards her chartered accountancy with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Laura said: “During my apprenticeship I learnt the basic accountancy principles which I now practise every day. APPRENTICES BUILD FOR THE COMMUNITY Two Bury primary schools have enlisted the help of Bury College Building and Maintenance apprentices to help renovate areas of their schools.

Apprentices have been renovating classrooms and school facilities at Woodhey High School and Philips High School. Utilising the skills and knowledge they have gained during their apprenticeship, learners undertook a range of jobs including re-boarding, tiling, grouting, emulsioning and skimming walls.

Graeme Steele, one of the apprenticeswho took part in these projects said ofthe experience:

“The work that we are carrying out is great experience as we are further developing our team work and gaining on-site experience which is different from the college workshop and our usual places of work.”

OFFICE MANAGER LEADS TEAM TO SUCCESSStephanie Moyle achieved her career goal after progressing through the apprenticeship levels and has now returned to Bury College to gain the skills needed to lead her new office team.

Stephanie took the first step in her career in 2014 when she achieved a Level 2 Business Administration before going onto complete her Level 3. Stephanie secured a job at Eatock Primary School in Bolton and worked in the school office.

Upon completion of her Level 3 apprenticeship in June 2016, Stephanie secured the role of Office Manager atthe primary school. Having now appointed two new members of staff to support her in the school office, Stephanie has chosen to return to Bury Collegeand achieve the Team Leading apprenticeship.

Stephanie said:

“I am proud to have achieved my dream job and to have reached a peak in my career. I now feel confident within my new role and I am at a point where I am ready to gain a new qualification and transfer the good practices I learnt during my apprenticeships onto my two team members.”

OURAPPRENTICES SAYJoe Fletcher is completing a Level 3 Mechanical Maintenance apprenticeship at Camfil UK, a worldwide leader in the field of Air Filtration. Joe is combining his apprenticeship with the BTEC HNC Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering which will further support his career progression.

“My apprenticeship is really good. I like the mix of gaining industry experience, earning a wage and learning the theory.”

OURAPPRENTICES SAY

ENGINEERING YOUR SUCCESSTwo aspiring engineers have secured apprenticeships and will gain skills needed for their dream careers.

Ben Pope, a former Tottington High School pupil and George Peak, a former Cannon Slade High School pupil, are completing the Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Advanced Engineering. They are completing their apprenticeships at Cope Engineering

(Radcliffe) Limited, a company which specialises in manufacturing rollers and cylinders as well as undertaking engineering operations.

Both apprentices have gained hands-on experience using industry standard equipment such as lathe turners and are working on projects where they are learning how to complete drilling, milling and fitting processes.

“My apprenticeship is really good as I am always learning new skills and gaining industry experience. I am looking forward to completing my apprenticeship and progressing directly into employment.”

AWARD WINNING HIGHER APPRENTICEJamie Barry has scooped an apprentice of the year award and impressed industry professionals during a regional competition.

Jamie is currently completing an AAT Higher Apprenticeship at Avonside Group, one of Britain’s largest roofing contractors with 29 branches nationwide. Based at Avonside Head Office in Heywood, Jamie impressed the company with his ongoing commitment to his role and was awarded Avonside Apprentice of the Year Award, beating off competition from over 40 other Avonside apprentices.

Adding to his competition success, Jamie was also placed third in the Young Trainee of the Year Award category during the Celebrating Construction in South Yorkshire Awards 2016. Jamie said,

“By completing my higher apprenticeship I am gaining in-depth subject knowledge and learning about accounting in great detail.”

Liam Anderson is completing the Level 2 ICT Professional Competence apprenticeship at DLS Technologies Ltd. Liam has undertaken a range of responsibilities including remote support, system administration and various duties in the workshop. Upon completion of his Level 2 apprenticeship, Liam would like to progress onto the Level 3 ICT Professional Competence apprenticeship.
