Submitting Assignments in Kaltura
There are two primary ways that students will use Kaltura – to post video responses in discussion
boards, and to submit video assignments. If you are asked to create a video for another purpose,
the process is identical. This video will cover how to make webcam and screencasts for grade
submission.
Finding Your Media
Make sure to begin in your My Media within Canvas. To find your My Media, navigate within a
course and then look along the left navigation pane. You should see a link that reads “My
Media.” If you click on it, you will be taken to a page that includes all media you made, whether
or not it has been published to an assignment or discussion board. This is where you can keep
track of, and further edit, any media throughout your college career.

When you are in Canvas, you will be able to edit or add media. If you already have a video you
plan to upload to the course, remember that you can always edit the title or description here later,
by using the gray pencil icon all the way to the right. If you have not made a video, click on the
“Add New” dropdown, and then select Kaltura Capture.
Looking at the image above, notice that there is a “Media Upload” option. If you have your own
video software, or if you capture video on your phone, you can upload it as a video file directly
into Kaltura later. This is a great option if it’s easier to create videos on your phone.
Once you have downloaded and opened the Kaltura Capture software, you will have four
possible video types. You can create a media item that is just audio; you can create a webcam
video with audio; you can create a screencast with audio; or you can create a screencast with
your webcam on as well. You might use that last one if you need to do a virtual presentation and
want to show your face in it too. Often, you will not be asked to simultaneously record your
screen and webcam, but it could add a nice touch to any media when your face is included.
Because of the nature of assignments, you most likely won’t need to do a standalone audio
recording either.

Creating New Media
Below is the Kaltura Capture interface. Notice that there is a screen icon, a camera icon, and a
microphone icon. When the icons are blue, that means they’re on. If they’re gray with a line
through them, that means they’re off. If both the screen and the camera icons are blue, both
will be recording you. Once the video has been recorded, you cannot delete one camera input.
Make sure to turn off the input you do not want to use.
Make sure you know which audio input Kaltura is using. You most likely don’t want it to pick
up your computer audio if you have a microphone plugged in.

If you are making a webcam recording, the same steps apply, but with the camera icon.
Once you have finished recording, save and upload your video to Canvas. Give it a few minutes
to process, and you should soon see it appear in your Canvas My Media.

Submitting Your Video as an Assignment in a Canvas Module
The next step is to navigate to the assignment in the course. Go into the modules, and then find
the assignment you plan to submit a video to. Click the green “submit assignment” button, as you
would when submitting any other assignment type.
When you go to submit. Click the “text entry” tab. Look for the blue V icon, and when you click
on it, Kaltura Media will pop up as an option. If you do not see the option to submit a text entry,
contact your instructor or email [email protected], and we will make sure to add that as a
submission option.
Once you click that button, all your Kaltura media will come up. Click on the assignment you
want to submit.

The video will drop into the submission pane. Submit by clicking the green “submit assignment”
button just below.
The most difficult part is creating the video – everything is a piece of cake from there!
Submitting Your Video as a Discussion Board Post
Discussion board video submissions are nearly identical. If you would like to submit a video to a
discussion board, go to the forum where you plan to add the video. You will see the same text
entry options when you hit “reply,” and from there you can embed your Kaltura media by
clicking on the V icon.
That’s it! The process should be the same, no matter what type of assignment you’re submitting.
