Live Captioning

When your students are participating in a session, they have the ability to turn on live captioning so captions will be created on the fly. These will NOT be included in any recordings of the class session.

01Once students have joined a session, they can turn on live captioning by choosing the ellipsis in the top icon bar of the meeting.

02In the dropdown, choose Turn on live captions.

Captions in Microsoft Stream

Once you’ve recorded your session in Teams, you can access it in Microsoft Stream and add captions.

01To access the recording, go to the chat area of your session. You will see a line with a video and the word Call.

02Choose the ellipsis at the top right of the video to view the dropdown. Choose Open in Microsoft Stream. This will open Microsoft Stream in a browser window.

03 Once in Stream, choose My Content in the top menu bar to show a dropdown list. Then choose Videos.

04 On the Videos page, choose the Edit icon (the pencil) to the right of the video you’d like to caption.

05 On the edit page, you will see 3 columns – Details, Permissions, and Options. In the Details column, be sure to choose English under Video Language.

06 Once you’ve chosen English, the Captions box will turn on in the Options section.

07 The captions should be generated within 24 hours. Much sooner for short recordings. The closed caption symbol will appear at the bottom right of the video when they’re ready. The captions will be at the bottom of the viewing window.

Captions are not included when downloading the video and can only be

viewed in Stream.

Captions in Kaltura

Once you’ve downloaded your session recording, you will want to add the recorded video to Kaltura for automatic captioning. To access Kaltura, go to your Canvas course, and in the left navigation panel, select My Kaltura.

Upload a Video to Kaltura

01Once inside My Kaltura you can add a video by selecting the Add New button.

You will be offered a variety of choices. Select Media Upload.

Browse for your video by clicking the + button or drag the file into the designated area.

04While the video is uploading, you can add the title, a description, and tags. The description appears on your My Kaltura or the Course Kaltura page.

05Once the upload is complete, your video will then appear on the Kaltura Media page. If the video is long, you may see a message saying the media is still processing.

Editing Captions

Captions are automatically created in Kaltura once you upload your video, however, you may need to edit them.

01To access the caption editing feature, select your video within My Kaltura. On this screen, select Actions. Then choose + Caption & Enrich from the dropdown menu.

This opens the captions page. Select the pencil to edit. If you do not see this then your captions may still be processing. 02

This opens the editing screen. Scan through the text (1) to find any discrepancies or use the video scrubber (2) to go to a certain point within the video. Select the play button (3) to listen to the video to verify what was said.

04 To edit, type the correct text in the line selected. Kaltura auto saves your changes.
