Introduction
Welcome STARBASE Engineer! In this lesson you will use Creo 3D design software to assemble components to the DoD Submarine. When you are finished, you will create a photorealistic image to show off your design. Enjoy your mission!
Lesson Setup
1. Start Creo Parametric 2.0 .
2. Click Select Working Directory :
Browse to the folder named STARBASE_Creo2.
Double-click the folder named Submarine.
Click OK.

Task 1 – Open your submarine assembly
1. Click Open :
Select 01_submarine.asm.
Click Open.

Task 2 – Assemble the left propeller
1. Middle-click and drag to spin your submarine so you can see inside the left rear engine.
2. Click Assemble :
Select 02_propeller_left.prt.
Click Open.
3. In the graphics area, click to place the propeller near your submarine as shown.
The component being assembled can be moved within the graphics area using the 3D Dragger. Select and drag the shaded sphere at its center to move the component in any direction. The shaded arrows can be used to translate the component along those axes and the shaded rings can be used to rotate the component.

4. Roll your middle-mouse wheel to zoom closer to the left rear engine.
5. Select two assembly references:
Blue cylinder.
Orange flat circular surface.
6. Click Complete Component .
7. From the In Graphics toolbar, click Refit .
8. Middle-click and drag to spin your submarine.

Task 3 – Assemble the right propeller
1. Middle-click and drag to spin your submarine so you can see inside the right rear engine.
2. Click Assemble :
Select 03_propeller_right.prt.
Click Open.
3. In the graphics area, click to place the propeller near your submarine as shown.
4. Roll your middle-mouse wheel to zoom closer to the right rear engine.
5. Select two assembly references:
Blue cylinder.
Orange flat circular surface.
6. Click Complete Component .
7. Click Refit and spin your submarine.

Task 4 – Open a mission submarine and assemble a component to the top
You will now open a submarine mission assembly and make it ready for a research, reconnaissance or search and rescue mission. It is your job to assemble components that will be used on the mission.
1. Click Open and select one of the following mission assemblies:
04_deep_sea_research_sub.asm
04_reconnaissance_sub.asm
04_search_and_rescue_sub.asm
2. Click Open.
You will now assemble a component to the top of your submarine. The following instructions demonstrate the assembly process using the robot arm gripper; however, any component name starting with “05” can be assembled to this location.
3. Click Assemble :
Select one of the following components.
Click Open.
05_lights.prt
Illumination Distance = 70m
Total Weight = 70kg
05_radar.prt
Communication Distance = 5km
Weight = 10kg
05_robot_arm_gripper.asm
Maximum Load = 25kg
Weight = 150kg
05_robot_arm_scooper.asm
Maximum Load = 25kg
Weight = 150kg
05_sensor.prt
Communication Distance = 3km
Weight = 25kg

4. In the graphics area, click to place the component near the top of your Submarine.
5. Zoom closer to the green cylinder.
6. Select two assembly references:
Green cylinder.
Orange flat circular surface.
7. Click Complete Component .
8. Click Refit and spin your submarine.

Task 5 – Assemble a component to the bottom of your submarine
You will now assemble a component to the bottom of your submarine. The following instructions demonstrate the assembly process using the underwater camera; however, any component name starting with “06” can be assembled to this location.
1. Spin your Submarine so you can see the underside.
2. Click Assemble :
Select one of the following components.
Click Open.

Drill Distance = 4m
Weight = 70kg
06_winch.prt
Maximum Load = 2500kg
Weight = 25kg
06_seabed_scanner.prt
Scanning Depth = 10m
Weight = 30kg
06_underwater_camera.asm
Viewing Distance = 400m
Weight = 15kg
06_radar.prt
Communicate Distance = 5km
Weight = 10kg

3. In the graphics area, click to place your component near the green cylinder as shown.
4. Zoom in closer to the green cylinder.
5. Select two assembly references:
Green cylinder.
Orange flat circular surface.
6. Click Complete Component .
7. Click Refit and spin your submarine.

Optional Task – Assemble components to the rear supply pod
1. From the In Graphics toolbar, click Named Views and select 1_POD_VIEW from the drop-down menu.
2. Click Drag Components :
Click the red handle on the rear hatch once.
Move your mouse up to open the door.
Click again to keep it open.
3. In the Drag dialog box, click Close.
You will now assemble a component to the submarine supply pod. The following instructions demonstrate the assembly process using the water tank; however, any of the components that you created or any component name starting with “07” can be assembled to this location.
4. Click Assemble :
Select one of the following components.
Click Open.

6. Zoom in closer to the yellow surface.
7. Select three assembly references:
Orange large cylinder.
White small cylinder.
Yellow flat surface.
8. Click Complete Component .

You will now assemble another component to the supply pod. The following instructions demonstrate the assembly process using the rock sampler; however, any component name starting with “08” can be assembled to this location.
10. If necessary, click Named Views and reselect 1_POD_VIEW from the drop-down menu.
11. Click Assemble :
Select one of the following components.
Click Open.

12. In the graphics area, click to place the component near the purple surface as shown.

13. Zoom in closer to the purple surface.
14. Select three assembly references:
Blue large cylinder.
Green small cylinder.
Purple flat surface.
15. Click Complete Component .
16. Click Refit and spin your submarine.
17. Click Regenerate .
Notice that Regenerate closed the supply pod and rear hatch.

Optional Task – Assemble a driver to the front platform
1. On your keyboard, press CTRL + D.
2. Click Drag Components :
Click the red handle on the front window once.
Move your mouse up to open the window.
Click again to keep it open.
3. In the Drag dialog box, click Close.
You will now assemble a driver to the inside of your submarine. The following instructions demonstrate the assembly process using the female soldier; however the male soldier can also be assembled to this location.
4. Click Assemble :
Select one of the drivers.
Click Open.

5. In the graphics area, click to place your driver near the platform as shown.
6. Zoom in closer to the green and yellow cylinders.
7. Select three assembly references:
Green large cylinder.
Yellow small cylinder.
Blue flat circular surface.
8. Click Complete Component .
9. Click Refit and spin your submarine.

Optional Task – Assemble components to the front platform
You will now assemble a component to the inside of your submarine. The following instructions demonstrate the assembly process using the control panel; however the front camera can also be assembled to this location.
1. If necessary, press CTRL + D.
2. Click Assemble :
Select one of the components below.
Click Open.

4. Zoom in closer to the orange and white cylinders.
5. Select three assembly references:
Orange large cylinder.
White small cylinder.
Blue flat circular surface.
6. Click Complete Component .
7. Click Refit and spin your submarine.
8. Click Regenerate .
Notice that Regenerate closed the control platform and front window.

Task 6 – Add colors to your submarine
1. Click Appearance Gallery and select a color ball from the drop-down menu.
If your cursor is not a paintbrush , re-select a color.
Select each part that you want to color.
Hold the CTRL key to select more than one part.
Middle-click or click OK to apply the color.
2. Spin and zoom your submarine and admire your work.
3. Save your rover:
Click Save .

Task 7 – Select a background image and run the submarine’s motors
1. Open the Render tab.
2. Click No Shadow .
When you render your submarine, there will not be a
shadow displayed.
3. Click Background .
4. In the Open dialog box:
Select a background image.
Click Open.
5. Position your sub to fit the background:
Spin it into the orientation you want.
Hold the SHIFT key while you
middle-click and drag it into position.
Zoom in closer.
5. Click Run Motors and wait while Creo fires up the submarine’s motors.
After the Animate dialog box opens, you can spin and zoom your rover.
6. In the Animate dialog box:
Forward, reverse or speed up the animation.
When the animation is where you want it, click Stop .

Task 8 – Render your submarine to create a photorealistic image
1. After stopping the animation, you may need to reposition your
submarine:
Spin it into the orientation you want.
Hold the SHIFT key while you middle-click and drag it
into position.
Zoom in closer.
2. Click Add Text and in the Render Setup dialog box:
If your teacher wants you to, in the Text field, type in
your name to replace STARBASE.
3. Click Render Window .
Congratulations! You have finished the DoD submarine
design. All that is left to do now is to wait for Creo to create the
photorealistic image of your design.

4. Click File> Save As> Save a Copy.
5. From the Save a Copy dialog box:
Open the Type drop-down list and select JPEG (*.jpg).
Click OK.
