Read the following stories carefully and solve them.

1. Dave bought a TV for ₹45,575 and a refrigerator for ₹25,615.

How much money did he spend in all?

Sol:

Cost of TV = ₹45,575

Cost of refrigerator=₹25,615

Total money spend by Dave=

45,575+25,615

4 5 5 7 5

+ 2 5 6 1 5

7 1 1 9 0

Thus, ₹71190 is total money spend by Dave.

2. A newspaper agent delivers 15,545 English newspapers and

14,275 Hindi newspaper in a day. How many newspapers does

he deliver in a day?

Sol:

Total number of newspapers delivered by agent=

15,545+14,275

1 5 5 4 5

+ 1 4 2 7 5

2 9 8 2 0

Thus, 29820 newspapers are delivered by the agent in a day.

4. Find the difference between six lakh forty-three

thousand three hundred seven and six lakh four

thousand two hundred seven.

Sol

643307 – 604207

= 39,100

5.By how much is 12,458 bigger than 10,245?

Sol:

12,458-10,245

= 2,213

Thus, 12,458 is bigger than 10,245 by 2,213.

6.Try yourself.

7.By how much is the sum of 1,51,263 and 47,856 smaller than

2,00,000?

Sol:

Sum of 1,51,263 and 47,856 is

199,119

Now,

2,00,000-199,119

= 881

So the sum of 1,51,263 and 47,856 is smaller than 2,00,000 by 881.

Read the following stories carefully and solve them.

1. Sushma placed an order for 15,775 flowers for decorating a

party hall. There were 9,455 yellow and the rest were white.

How many white flowers were there?

Sol:

Number of flowers sushma ordered=15,775

Number of yellow flowers=9,455

Thus, number of white flowers =

15,775-9,455

1 5 7 7 5

- 9 4 5 5

6 3 2 0

2. The difference between two numbers is 75,894. The number

that was subtracted is 2,35,675. Find the other number.

Sol:

Difference of two numbers = 75,894

The number that was subtracted

= 2,35,675

Let the other number = X

X – 2,35,675 = 75,894

X = 75,894 + 2,35,675

= 311569

So the other number= 3,11,569

Ex 3.9

1. Estimate the difference to the nearest ten and compare with

the actual difference.

a) 49 – 23

Sol:

To estimate the difference, we shall round the numbers

to the nearest tens and then subract them.

49 can be rounded to 50.

23 can be rounded to 20.

Subtracting 20 from 50 gives difference of 30.

Thus the actual difference is

49 – 23= 26

The estimate and the actual value differ just by 4.

b)to d Try yourself.

e) 34,578 – 8674

sol:

34,578 can be rounded to 34,580

8674 can be rounded to 8670.

Subtracting 8670 from 34,580 gives a difference of 25910.

Thus the actual difference is 34,578-8674=25904

The estimate and the actual value differ just by 8.

2. Estimate the difference to the nearest hundred and compare

with the actual difference.

a) 287 – 122

Sol:

287 can to rounded to 300

122 can be rounded to 100

Subtracting 100 from 300 gives a difference of 200.

Thus, the actual difference is 287 – 122 = 165

The estimate and the actual value differ by 35.

b) 76,840 – 43,656

Sol:

76,840 can be rounded to 76,800.

43,656 can be rounded to

43,600.

Subtracting 43,600 from

76,800 gives 33,200.

Thus, the actual difference is

76,840 – 43,656 = 33,184

The estimate and the actual value differ just by 16
