Def inition

Suburban mostly refers to a residential area. They may be the residential

areas of a city, or separate residential communities within commuting distanceof a city

Generally, suburban areas (also known as suburbs), pertain to residential

districts.

A suburb can also mean the surrounding residential areas of a bigger city, and a

group of these can collectively be regarded as the suburbs.

They can actually form a part of a really big city, or they can be several

aggregates of distant residential areas.

Understanding

India is still more living in its villages. But more Indians are now living in

sub-urban towns than ever before

Suburbs are typically made up of single-family detached residences, with

more green space and a lower population density than the city

Many communities exist within a "gray area" between urban andsuburban, or even between suburban and rural, especially as suburban

sprawl continues.

Suburbs have a lower population density when compared to urban

territories.

Sub-Urban as Emerging Areas

Developing Infrastructures - The suburbs are developing new Industries so

they are growing rapidly. In semi-urban segment, FMCG market size, in 2008,

was around 19% and has been scaled up by 6% to touch 21% by end of 2009

Increasing Employment Opportunities -Opportunities are growing in suburbs,

esp. with new industries coming up

Cheaper Housing It is possible to have bigger spaces for lesser prices as

compared to cities in which land is almost unavailable today and very

expensive

Greener, Less Populated Towns - Sub-Urban is greener and more close to

nature. The suburbs are usually areas with lesser traffic and pollution.

More Security The suburbs ,normally do not have as high the crime rate as

cities and metros therefore they are more safe and secure living options today.

Less Competitive Due to low population and less demand these towns are

not competitive and the people are more happy with simple living, thus the

sub-urban living is peaceful and content

Business

General tendency of people is not to think something big for the future but to

just think of the monthly earning.

Businessmen are less as compared to servicemen. Businessmen mostly consist

of Shop owners.

People are not highly qualified to take up senior positions in the offices, peoplework in Govt Offices

Some towns that serve as mandi or market towns for the surrounding

countryside do better in terms of turnover

Now, people have started travelling on daily basis to companies or factories inneighboring urban areas.

Children normally have to follow their forefathers' business, which may be

farming, cobbling, carpentry or running their own shop

Industry

Suburbs attract the manufacturing or industrial operations

Due to massive available spaces, refueling and maintenance of vehicles outlets,

factories, automobile manufacturing units are there. Bigger parking spaces are

available

Inf rastructure

Suburban areas tend to lack huge shopping malls; entertainment facilities are

less

For advanced health care facilities, people may have to run to a nearby urban

locality.

Suburban roads is less clogged in transport; noise and industrial pollution is lessand life is far less hectic than in urban areas.

These areas do not have too many Mega Malls, or Trade Centres, or cultural

centers. Movie Theatres are also lesser

Many independent houses are there in the suburban

Although houses are closer to each other, or have common walls which give the

residential areas/streets congested look

Basic Amenities

Basic requirements like electricity are outside the remit of the local

administration. They depend on the state governments ability to supply

and distribute electric power throughout the state.

People have accepted limited supply of electricity in their homes and

many have adjusted to battery back ups/Inverters or Generators. Most of them do not complain about the shortage of electricity

For e.g. - In Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, no one complained about the shortage

of electricity, in Madhubani in Bihar, the current came for only a few

hours every day.

Basic Amenities

There are towns with no source of water, entirely dependent on external

supplies

There are others that have revived their local sources to tide them over

times of shortage.

For e.g. Sehore in Madhya Pradesh faces an acute water crisis and is

dependent on tanker supplies, while Jhunjhunu is located in a perennially

dry state and yet manages its water resources. Shortage of water is one of

the biggest challenges facing most towns and cities in India, a problem

that has to be addressed to sustain urban life.

Unplanned Towns in Sub-urban

The absence of planning is what defines the small towns and cities inIndia

Many of them do not even possess an accurate town map. As a result, there

is no plan on how to use the space available for expansion, to establish rules

for construction in older parts of the town, or to preserve adequate open

spaces.

There is no particular pattern or plan in the way new structures are

constructed

Most of the small towns have natural resources such as ponds or a river that

could be revived.

Several towns have important historical sites that could be turned into

revenue generators by some thought and planning instead the historical

monuments are neglected and mostly vandalized.

People

Many people keep their own cows or buffaloes for milk because they do nottrust the local milk supply

People in suburban areas go to bed early and the hustle and bustle of night

life is far subdued or even absent in a suburban.

People are more loyal and friendly in suburbs as they get more time to

socialize.

Weddings are an affair of a few days. Family hosting the wedding

accommodates many guests for the week

People travel into the urban areas in order to work, shop, study, recreate, or

do business

Poverty And Slums

Unlike the common belief, poverty and slums also have a visible presence in thesmaller towns.

In these towns upto a quarter of the population lives in slums. These are different

from the slums in larger cities in that they appear more settled, they are cleaner and

the people living in them have title to the land.

These do not have water and sanitation and even the electricity they have is usually

stolen.

In small towns, slum people live without basic services but also without the

prospect of finding sustainable livelihoods, which is available in urban .
