Wealsoneedtoacknowledgeourstudents’parents.Thesespecialparentsarewillingtosupporttheirkids’decisiontopursueamajorthatdoesn’thaveaspecificjoboutlinedattheendoftheirstudies.Alotofourstudentsareentrepreneurs,theycreatecottageindustries,theyfindwaystofollowtheirpassionsthroughouttheircareers.Iwanttocelebratetheparentsthatsupportthisdirection.

Ithinkofmyownparents,whoweretrulyspecialbecausetheyraisedadrummer.Raisingadrummerisn’tfun.It’sloud.Inthebeginning,it’salotofnoise.Butmyparentswerereallyunderstandingandencouraging.Mygrandmotherlivedwithus,andI’dcomehomeasalittlekidandshe’dsay,“Ihopeyou’regoingtoplayyourdrumstoday.”Familieswhoraisecreativekidsarevery,veryspecial.

Forthosestudentsandtheirfamilieswhoarehesitantaboutpursuinganeducationinwhattheyloveratherthansomethingtheyperceiveas“safe,”Ihavethistosay:Wearea“whole-brain”institution.Lookacrossourprograms:wehavealargerequirementofliberalartsandsciencesforallstudents,andevenwithineachmajortherearerequiredcoursesthatcovertheory,notjustpractice.Across the board, in all our majors and electives, columbia college gives students a full education.That’sprobablythebiggestdifferencebetweenColumbiaandotherartsandmediaschools.TheB.A.degreeourstudentsearnreflectsafull,well-roundededucation.Theyarenotonlytrainedinthepracticeandtechnologyoftheirdiscipline,theyhavethephilosophical

standing,theoreticalbase,andunderstandingofhistoricalandcontemporaryeventstohelpframetheartsandmediathey’recreating.Thatoffersanewkindofcareer“safety”inthesetimes—itgivesourstudentsthewherewithaltobeagile,tobeflexible,tocreativelyusetheirdegreetomakethecareertheywant,ortogoontopursuegraduateorprofessionaldegreesinotherareas.

Asadrummer,Ilearnedtobeateamplayer.Drummersaren’tsoloists;theyworkwithateam.Butthey’realsoleaders,settingthebeat.Drummershavetodomanythingsatthesametime.Yourlefthand,yourrightfoot,theyallworkindependentlyofoneanother.Youhavetomultitask.Andyouhavetobeearly;there’salottosetup!Asanadministrator,I’mveryconsciousofthosethingsIlearnedasadrummer.i followed my passion, my muse, as i hope our students will do.I’mconfidentthatiftheydo,theytoowillfindthey’vemadeadecisionthatwillservethemwell.

Fiore,whoearnedaB.A.infilmwithaconcentrationincinematographyin1987,wasthecinematographerforthelive-actionscenesintherecord-breakingmovie,filmedinNewZealand.Hismostrecenteffort,The A-Team,openednationwideonJune11. Pixar’sUp,whichwontheOscarforBestAnimatedFeatureFilm,alsobenefitedfromthetalentsofColumbiaalumni:DanielLopezMunoz(B.A.’96)servedasart

director,andAaronHartline(’98),whoattendedColumbiabutdidnotreceiveadegreefromthecollege,workedasananimatoronthefilm. HilmarKoch(B.A.’93)wasawardedaScientific&TechnicalAwardforadvancingthetechniqueofambientocclusionrenderingbytheAcademyofMotionPicturesArts&Sciences.KochiscurrentlyemployedbyLucasfilmLtd.,whichwasfoundedbyGeorgeLucasin1971.

MEDia prODuCtiOn CEntEr OpEnS fOr ClaSSESColumbia’s new 35,500-square-foot Media Production Center (MPC) opened to students with the beginning of spring semester classes on January 25, 2010. Theopeningcamejust13monthsaftertheinitialgroundbreaking.Designedfromthegrounduptoaccommodateanewwayofteachingfilmmakingandmediaproductionforthetwenty-firstcentury,theprojectsawitsbeginningsinconversationsthatbeganin2001,shortlyafterWarrickCarterbeganhistenureaspresidentofthecollegeandmadethecreationofastate-of-the-artproductionfacilityapriority.TheprojectgainedmomentumwhenAllenTurner,apartnerinthePritzkerOrganization,becameChairmanofColumbia’sBoardofTrusteesin2005,actingasacatalysttobringittofruition. Theinnovativestructure,designedbyJeanneGang/StudioGangArchitects,incorporatessustainabledesignandconstructionprocessesandcommemorates

Chicago’slongroleinthehistoryoffilmmaking,witha25-footterra-cottaarchsalvagedfromtheformerFamousPlayers-LaskyCorporation,aparentofParamountPictures,whosefacilitiesoncestoodnearby. brEEn WinS fiSCHEtti EDitOrial CartOOn COMpEtitiOnIf a picture’s worth a thousand words, then San Diego Union-Tribune cartoonist Steve Breen said a mouthful with his winning entry that captured the 2010 John Fischetti Editorial Cartoon Competition coordinatedbyColumbiaCollegeChicago’sDepartmentofJournalism.BreenhasbeentheeditorialcartoonistfortheSan Diego Union-Tribunesince2001.HisworkisnationallysyndicatedbyCreatorsNewsServiceandregularlyappearsinUSA Today,theNew York Times,andNewsweek. Breen’sentry,oneofmorethan150submitted,depictsthebacklashoftheIraniangovernment’sunsuccessfulattemptlastyeartosquashInternetcommunicationsdocumentingpublicuprisings.ThecartoonfeaturesanimageoftheAyatollahAliKhameneiwiththeTwitterbirdperchedatophishead. Thisannualcompetitionwascreatedin1980inmemoryofthePulitzerPrize-winningpoliticalcartoonistJohnFischetti.Fischetti’sworkgracedthepagesofmanypublications,includingtheChicago Sun-Times,Chicago Daily News,andtheNew York Herald Tribune.

ScholarshipColumbia,agivinginitiativethatincludesamatchingcomponentfromthecollege,waslaunchedinJanuary2009.Sincethen,participationfromdonorshasbeensteadilyincreasing,withstudentsgainingimmediatefinancialbenefit.FromJanuary1,2009,toJanuary15,2010,$66,991wascontributedandmatchedbythecollegeforatotalof$193,796.Twenty-ninestudentsreceivedscholarshipsthisspring. Givinghasincreaseddramaticallyin2010.BetweenJanuary16andApril26,2010,

$144,997wascontributed,foratotalof$251,007afterthematch.Forty-threestudentswillreceivescholarshipsforthe2010-11academicyear.Includedinthesurgeofgivingwasa156-percentincreaseinfaculty/staffgiving,dueinlargeparttotheFacultyandStaffScholarshipInitiative,agrass-roots,peer-to-peergivingcampaignlaunchedbyColumbiafacultyandstaffindirectresponsetothedifficulteconomictimesfacingourstudents.

impaired.”Thenationaltelevisionspotispartofacampaignfrom

HealthandDisabilityAdvocatesthaturgesemployersto“Think

BeyondtheLabel.”TheroleperfectlysuitsWallace,whohastaken

aconsistentlypositiveapproachtoherfulfillingcareersinthearts

andactivismforpeoplewithdisabilities.

“Thesetypesofadsareusuallyapityparty,”saysWallace,who

earnedaB.F.A.inTheaterandMusicfromColumbiaCollegein1985.

“Butthiscampaigncanbejustaspowerfulusinghumor.”

Theactress-singer,whocontractedpolioattheageoffive,callsher

wheelchair“abeautifulaccessory.”Asachildrecoveringfrompainful

orthopedicsurgeries,Wallacefoundinspirationbysingingalongto

herfather’sEllaFitzgerald,FrankSinatra,andBillieHolidayrecords.

AtColumbia,thelateWilliamRusso,whowasthemusicdepartment

chairandfounderoftheChicagoJazzEnsemble,castherinherfirst

vocalperformance,Ellington Sacred Works,attheGetzTheatre.This

opportunityandtheencouragementofherinstructorsgaveWallace

“theconfidencetoseriouslypursueacareerinthearts.”

SheestablishedDance>Detour,Chicago’sfirstprofessional

“physicallyintegrated”dancecompany,in1995,provingthather

wheelchaircantransformherintoanethereallyglidingpresence,

likeanicedancer.Byjoiningtogetherartistsofmixedabilities,

Dance>Detour’sstageportraitstakeonanotherlevelofgraceand

athleticvirtuosity.Thecompanyhastouredthecountry,recently

performingataconventionfortheCouncilforDisabilitiesRightsin

Rochester,NewYork.

TherecanbenoquestionthatWallacelivesafullandproductive

life.ShehascollaboratedwiththeJoffreyBallet;wasfeaturedin

the1998PBSdocumentaryDance from the Heart,narratedby

BenVereen;andin2008wasnamedMs.WheelchairAmerica.

Thisspring,Wallacedebutedherone-womanshow,Men-o-Pause,

atChicago’sPropTheater.Theshowcarriesauniversalmessage

abouthowmanyofus,atveryyoungages,areconditionedtohide

certainaspectsofourselves(whetherit’sabirthmarkorahigh

IQ).Wallace,forinstance,coversupherlegsbywearingpantsor

longskirts,andevenwhenshewasachild,hercrutcheswerenot

includedinfamilyportraits.Men-o-Pauseoffersawittyandbalanced

takeonbodyimageandthefamiliar“look-away”mentalityoften

appliedtothosewithdisabilities.

Byputtingherselfliterallyfrontandcenteronstage,Wallace

deliversastrongmessageaboutcapabilities,withoutplayingthe

sympathycard.Thoughshestillbelievessocietyhasalongwaytogo

intheareasofaccessiblehousingandemploymentopportunities,

shealsoencouragespersonswithdisabilitiestoworktoconstantly

raiseawareness.Asanactress,Wallaceregularlyauditionsfor

televisionrolesthatdonotcallforawheelchair.“Wedon’talways

havetoplayaccidentvictims,”shestresses.“Wecanbethemother,

thejudge,thelover.”

Just12hoursago,QuennevilleandtheHawkslefttheicetoastanding

ovationafterwinninganovertimegameagainstaWesternConference

rival.Nowthebuildingisquiet,saveforthemaintenancecrewcleaning

upandthechatterofreportersgrillingCoachQ.Formorethaneight

minutes,thequestionsarefiredofflikeslapshots:Whowillthegoalie

beforanupcomingstretchofgames?How’sthehealthofsome

importantforwards?Whatdefensiveadjustmentsneedtobemade?

AdamL.Jahns,inhisfirstyearastheBlackhawksbeatwriterforthe

theteamisn’tplayingtoday,Jahnsdoesn’thavetosavethematerial

foragamestory.Instead,he“only”hastowriteuptheinformationfor

onTwitter.Allinall,aprettylow-keydayforthe2007graduateof

Columbia’smaster’sdegreeprograminjournalism.

“Everydayonthebeatisdifferent,”Jahnssays.“Theroutineisthe

samesometimes,butI’mindifferentcities,differentplayersare

doingwell,I’mtalkingtodifferentguys.Thingsarealwayschanging.”

Threemonthslater,JahnsisagaintalkingtoQuennevillefollowingan

overtimevictory—butthesceneisverydifferent.Insteadofahallway

inChicago,thisinterviewtakesplaceontheiceinPhiladelphia’s

WachoviaCenter.Thearenaispackedwithfans,reportersfrom

acrossthecountry,theplayers,andtheirfamilies.AndtheHawks

havejustdefeatedthePhiladelphiaFlyers4to3inGameSixofthe

StanleyCupFinals,winningthefranchise’sfirsttitlein49years.

“Theentireplayoffs,itwasawhirlwind,notmuchtimetorest,”Jahns

says.“Itwasagrind,fromawriter’sperspective,fromallthetravel

tonothavingadayoffinthreemonthstowritingonairplanes,writing

frommyhotelroom.”

Hockeyisasportofconstantmotion,andliketheplayershe

covers,the27-year-oldreporterisalwaysmoving.Theplayoffsalone

tookJahnsfromChicagotoNashville,Vancouver,SanJose,and

Philadelphia,watchingandwritingabouttheBlackhawks.Thelifelong

Chicagoansaystheresponsibilityisalittledaunting,butcoveringthe

city’sbiggestsportsstoryinyearshasofferedamazingopportunities.

“Itwastough,withtightdeadlines,butIalwaystriedtoputlotsof

colorinmyarticles,”Jahnssaysfollowingthechampionshipseason.

After covering the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup

championship season, Adam Jahns says,

“As a writer, I know I can handle it. As a fan, it really hasn’t sunk in yet.”

“Every day on the beat is different.”

The Portfolio centerAtColumbiaCollegeChicago,careerdevelopmentbeginsondayone.Finalpreparationforthejobhuntideallybeginsayearormorebeforegraduation,oftenatthePortfolioCenter.ThePortfolioCenteroffersresourcestostudentsinallmajors,withsomeservices,suchascareerworkshopsandwebsitehosting,availabletoalumniaswell.Themissionissimple:tohelpstudentsbeawareofwhatisexpectedfromthembytheprofessionalcommunityandtopreparetheirmaterialsaccordingly.Tothatend,eachsemesterstaffersholdworkshops,bringindozensofprofessionalstomeetwithstudents,demonstrateeffectiveportfoliostylesformanydisciplines,andprovideotherprofessionaldevelopmentresources.TimLongistheexecutivedirectorofCareerInitiatives,aconsortiumthatincludesthePortfolioCenter,acareer

developmentspecialist,andtheOfficeofStudentEmployment.Longwantstopreparestudentsforlifelongcareerbuilding,notjustthefirstjobsearchaftergraduation“Ouridealwouldbetogeteverystudentthinkingalongtheselines,”hesays.

Lastyear,260classesattendedpresentationsatthePortfolioCentertolearnhowtouseclassprojectstocreateprofessionalportfolios.Atthecenterandonitswebsite,studentscanseesampleportfolios.Somemajorslendthemselveseasilytoportfolios;graphicdesignstudents,forexample,seemtofindthattheportfolio-preparationprocessissecondnature.Butthecenteralsoservesactors,lightingdesigners,poets,dancers,marketers,journalists,andothergraduatesofColumbia’s120differentprograms.

Longemphasizesthatheandotherstaffmembershelpstudentspresentthemselvesandtheirworkinthemediabestsuitedtotheirprofessions.Journalism,management,andpublicrelationsstudentsmightlearnhowtopresenttheirworkinprojectortext-basedportfolios,whileaudioartistswillfindadviceonbuildingwebsitestoshowcasetheirsoundclips.Anactormaywanttoincludeashortvideoperformanceclip,sothePortfolioCenterwillhelpsupplytapingandeditingexpertise,withafacultymemberofferingadviceonamonolog.Thecenterhelpsstudents,whatevertheirmajors,designwebsites,createDVDpackages,anddisplayphotographsthatenhancetheirportfoliosandthepresentationoftheirwork.

BuildingaportfolioisanintegralpartofColumbia’sacademicprogram.JoanGiroux,associateprofessorofartanddesignintheSchoolofFineandPerformingArts,requiresfinalportfoliosinmanyofherclasses.Thatclasswork,andtheskillsexercisedinpullingittogether,canformthefoundationofaprofessionalportfolio.Shestressesdocumentationofworkbecausestudentsoftenwanttothrowawaytheirprojectsattheendofthesemester.“Aportfoliocreatesanopportunityorpresentsone,”Girouxsays,addingthattheseopportunitiesarenotexclusivelyprofessional.Aportfoliocanhelpastudentmeasureprogressoridentifygapsinknowledgeorskillsthatcanbeaddressedwithadditionalcourseworkorpractice.

Theportfolio-editingprocesscontinuesthroughoutone’scareer.Becauseprofessionaldevelopmentisanongoingprocess,thePortfolioCenteroffersanumberofservicesforalumni,includingworkshops,networkingopportunities,andWebAgent,awebsitedevelopmentandhostingservicethatmakesiteasyforalumnitobuildasitetosharetheirworkwithindustryprofessionals.

Therewasonceatimewhenonecouldgraduatefromcollegewitha“safe”degree—inaccounting,perhaps,orbusiness,orengineering—andexpecttogetajobwithabig,establishedcompanywhereonemightworkforyears,decades,evenanentirecareer.Nomore.

Thattimeexpiredyearsago.Peopleinthecreativeindustrieswereneverreallypartofthatlifestyle,anyway.Creativecareersareoftenmarkedbyentrepreneurship,freelancework,employmentwithsmallercompanies,andcontinualchange.Employersandclientsdon’tmakehiringdecisionsbasedonarésuméandon-campusinterview.Theywanttoseeevidenceoftalent,ability,knowledge,criticalthinking,andflexibility—thingsbestshownthroughexamplesofone’swork.

“ThePortfolioCenterandtheinternshipprogramworkreallywelltogether,”saysLaurenWalsh,a2010Film&Videograduate.“Theydoanamazingjobofhelpingstudentstakealookattheirworksothatitstandsoutinthebestway.”Walshhopesthatherpost-productioninternshipsleadtoemploymentaftergraduation,butevenifnot,“I’llbeleavingColumbiawithastrongbodyofwork.”

OneofthemostsuccessfulwaysthecollegehasfoundtobringstudentsandindustryprofessionalstogetherisIndustryNight,nowinitsthirdyear.Thecampus-widenetworkingevent,heldduringthefinalweekofthespringsemester,connectsgraduatingstudentswithhundredsofprofessionalsintheirfields.Thisyear,595creativeindustryprofessionalsregisteredtoattend,andmorethan600studentsparticipatedinshowcasesparticular

totheirdisciplines.Becauseitisnotajobfair,Longsaysthathehasn’thadanyindustrycancellationsduetotheeconomy.“Theyareinterestedinwhattheseyoungpeoplearedoing,andtheyarehappytolendahand.It’sagreatintroductiontonetworking,whichishowpeoplegetworkinthelongrun.”Onegraphicdesignstudent,whoseIndustryNightconnectionlandedhimajobwiththeChicago-baseddigitalagencyColossalSquid,creditedthecombinationofagoodportfolioandnetworkingskillswithhelpinghimsucceed.

“Connectingtocreativecareersrequiresavastlydifferentapproachthantraditionalcareers,andthisisreallytheimpetusforIndustryNight,”saysCarolineJuhlin,assistantdirectorofthePortfolioCenter.“Wewantthestudentstobepreparedtomeetwithpeopleintheirindustriesforfeedback,advice,andnetworkingwhichmay,directlyorindirectly,immediatelyorafteraperiodoftime,leadtojobs.”

Whilethere,Schwarzlosevisitedsometraditionalmusicclasses.

HelearnedthatduringthebrutalreignoftheKhmerRougeinthe

late1970s,whichtargetedanyonesuspectedofbeingeducatedor

intellectual,roughly95percentofallCambodianmusicianswere

massacred.Today,just15traditionalmastermusiciansfromthat

timeremain,manyofthemelderlyorinpoorhealth.

Schwarzlose,aclassicallytrainedmusicianandartistwhoearned

anM.F.A.inInterdisciplinaryArtsandMediafromColumbiain

2006,knewwhathehadtodo.HereturnedtoChicagoandgave

noticeatthePublicInterestLawInitiative,wherehehadbeen

workingforsixyears.

“IdoimportantstuffinChicago,butI’mdone,”hedecided.

“IintendtogotoCambodiaandsavethemusic…Iplantobe

therefordecades.Iwillnotstop.”Heisworkingtoraisemoney

andworldwideinterestinCambodianLivingArts,agroupthatis

attemptingtosaveCambodia’straditionalmusicfromextinction

bytrainingyoungmusiciansatthefeetofthefewremaining

masters.Hehasinvestedthousandsofhisowndollarsinthe

cause,buthopestosecuregrantsandoutsidefunding.

“SomanypeopleknowCambodiaforthehorriblethingstheKhmer

Rougedid,”Schwarzlosesays.“ThereisnowayI’mgoingtolet

thosehorriblepeoplewin35yearslaterjustbecausetheyalmost

wipedoutthemusic.[CambodianLivingArts]issomethingreally

beautifulandreallypositive.”

Schwarzlose’sworkinCambodiaisthelatestchapterina

consistentlyfascinatingartisticlife.In1998,hehelpedfoundthe

ElasticArtsFoundation,aChicago-basedmusicians’cooperative

thatproduceslivemusic,readings,art,theater,andmultimedia

events.AndwhileastudentatColumbia,hisworktookanother

interestingturn.Hehasalwaysbeeninterestedinmultisensory

art,soafriendsuggestedhecheckoutMoto—thegroundbreaking,

surrealisticChicagorestaurantrunbychefHomaroCantu.He

haddinnerthereandbecamefastfriendswiththechef.

“Thatmealliterallychangedmylife,”Schwarzlosesays.Hewound

upspendingfouryearswithCantu,touringtheworldandmaking

videosofCantu’samazingcreations.Hehelpedcreateandwrite

thefirstseasonofCantu’snewrealityshow,Future Food,which

beganairinginMarchonPlanetGreen.Hehopestocontinue

workingwithCantuwhilelivingoverseas.

“I’vefalleninlovewithCambodia,”Schwarzlosesays.“I’mstudying

thelanguageandI’mcommittedtolearningitandbeingfluent.”

HenowmakeshishomeinPhnomPenh,andisstruckbyhow

welcomingthepeopleare.“TheylovemeandIlovethem.”

student-runrecordlabel.“I’dliketodedicateittothestudentsforalltheworktheydid.”Thetributedrawsexuberantcheersfromtheaudience.

BigScienceresumesitsset,awell-playedtakeonlate-’70spost-punkindebtedtobandsliketheBuzzcocksandJoyDivision.Theband’smusichearkensbacktoadecadebeforemostofColumbia’scurrentstudentswereborn.Themusicindustry,however,hasgonethroughanupheavalinthelastdecade,andAEMMPRecords—alongwithotherelementsoftheundergraduatemusicbusinessconcentrationofferedbyColumbia’s

Arts,EntertainmentandMediaManagement(AEMM)department—hasundergonechangesrecentlytogivestudentsabettersenseofhowthereal-worldmusicbusinessisoperatingtoday.

Sincemid-1999,whentheonlinefilesharingserviceNapsterenabledthewidespreadexchangeofmusicfilesviatheInternet,unauthorizedfile

sharinghasbecomerampant,eventhoughcourtsintheUnitedStatesandothercountrieshaveruledrepeatedlythatitviolatescopyright.Atthesametime,salesofcompactdiskshaveplummeted,atrendtheRecordingIndustryofAmerica(RIAA)blamesonunauthorizedfilesharing.

Inresponse,majorrecordlabelshaveconsolidated,laidoffthrongsofemployees,andslashedtheirrostersofrecordingacts.Once-behemothretailchainssuchasTowerRecordshavegoneoutofbusiness,alongwiththousandsofindependentrecordstores.Actsthatcansellmillionsofrecordsstillexist—witness

thepop-rapactBlackEyedPeasandcountry-popsingerTaylorSwift—butincreasingly,musiciansarereachingmuchsmaller,nicheaudiencesandrelyingonconcertperformancesandothersourcestogeneraterevenue.

“We’reinaculturalshift,”saysNanWarshaw,cofounderofBloodshotRecords,anindependentlabelinChicago.Warshawearnedamaster’sdegreeinarts,entertainmentandmediamanagementin1994,thesameyearBloodshotreleaseditsfirstrecord.

Thelabelcontinuestoputoutasteadystreamofrecords,focusingonactsthatmixcountrymusictwangwithpunkrockfervor,butnowsellsfarfewerofthemthanitdidafewyearsago.“Wehavetodoeverythingmuchmorefrugallyaswellasbeingincrediblycreative,”Warshawsays.“Youhavetoadduniqueitemstoeveryreleasetomakeitsothatpeoplethinkit’sworthpayingfor.”

JustinSinkovich,theheadinstructorfortheAEMMPRecordsclass,isuniquelypreparedtohelporientColumbia’sstudentstothemusicindustry’srapidlychanginglandscape.HegrewupinNashvilleandwasworkinginthemusicindustrybeforehewasateenager,packingboxesforhisfather’smanagementcompanyandrecordlabel.Inthe15yearssincehereceivedhisbusinessdegreefromtheUniversityofTennesseeatKnoxville,Sinkovichhas(amongotherthings)foundedEpitonic.com,apopularwebsitethatofferedfree,legalmusicdownloads(theglobalmultimediacompanyPalmPicturesacquiredEpitonic.comin2000);spentfouryearsmanagingdigitaldistributionforthelate,legendaryChicago-basedlabelTouchandGoRecords;runhisownlabel,File13Records;andbeenasingerandguitaristinthreebands—thelatest,thePoisonArrows,willreleasearecordonFile13inAugust.

Inthemidstofitall,SinkovichearnedamastersofartsmanagementfromColumbiain2007.Afterteachingparttimeatthecollegeforseveralyears,hejoinedthefacultyfull-timein2009.Whenhedid,herestructuredtheclassbuiltaroundrunningAEMMPRecords,whichwasfoundedin1982.

Theclasshadbeenstartingoverfromscratcheveryacademicyear,withstudentssigninglocalbandstothelabelinthefall,helpingthemthroughtherecordingprocess,thenreleasingtherecordinthespring.NowAEMMPoperatesthroughouttheyear,withsomestudentsjoiningorstayingwiththeclassduringthesummerterm.ThestudentsarespendingthissummerpromotingBigScience’srecord,releasinga7-inchvinylsinglebyanotherlocalband,PetLions,andassemblingamixtape,scheduledforafallrelease,thatmarksAEMMP’sfirstforayintohip-hop.

Duringthecourseofworkingwithaband,AEMMPstudentsdetermineabudgetforthegroup’srecordandrelatedpromotion,negotiateacontractwiththeband,helpseethemthroughtherecordingprocess,determinethequantityofcompactdisksandvinylalbumsthatwillbereleased,arrangefortherecord’sproduction,coordinatethedesignandphotographyinvolvedinthecoverart,handlepublicityandpromotion,andmakesureallthenon-studentsinvolvedgetpaid—essentially,everythinginvolvedinrunningarecordlabel.

Alongwithdevelopingbusiness,management,andcommunicationskills,theyexperiencethedifficultiesofworkinginthemusicbusiness,frombudgetlimitationsandschedulingconflictstocreativetemperaments.ThereleaseofthePetLionssinglehadtobepostponed

repeatedlyduetoproblemsintherecordingandproductionprocess,andtheBigSciencerecordandrelatedmerchandiseonlyarrivedthedaybeforetheband’srecordreleaseshow.

“Thejokeisthatifsomethinggoeswrong,you’regettingthemostrealistic,hands-ontraininginwhatit’sliketoworkatarecordlabel,becausethatalwayshappens,”saysKeganSimmons,anadjunctprofessoratColumbiaandformerretaildirectoranddigitaldistributionsmanagerforBloodshotRecords,whobeganhelpingteachtheAEMMPclassthisspring.

BuildingonashiftinapproachinitiatedbyDavidLewisandMartinAtkins,whotaughttheAEMMPRecordscoursein2008-09,andwithsupportfromAEMM’snewMusicBusinessprogramcoordinatorJerryBrindisi,Sinkovich

andSimmonshaveexpandedthescopeofthestudents’involvementbeyondputtingouttherecorditself.Assignmentsnowincludebandmanagement,publishing,andanincreasedemphasisonbookingconcertperformances,includingtheBigSciencereleaseshow.Simmonspointsoutthatthisshiftrealisticallyreflectsthedirectionofthemusicindustry,asrecordlabelssignartiststo“360”dealsthatencompassconcerttours,merchandising,sponsorship,andlicensingmusicforuseintelevision,films,andadvertising.“Nowit’spartmanagementcompany,partmarketingcompany,partproductcompany.It’sbecomingamediacompanyfocusedaroundmusic,”saysDanielZarick,aseniorwithacombinedmajorinAEMMandgraphicarts,whowaschosenbyhisfellowstudentstobethemanagerofallthingsBigScience-related.

AtSinkovich’ssuggestion,AEMMPhadapresenceforthefirsttimethisyearatSouthbySouthwest,thesprawlingmusic-industryconferenceandshowcaseheldeachMarchinAustin,Texas.Thestudentsarrangedforadaytimepartythatfeaturedperformancesbythelabel’sbands.Theypickedthevenue,foundsponsors,bookedthebands(whowerepaidfortheirperformances),andevenmannedthesoundboardduringthesets.Tomakethelongtripworththebands’time,thestudentsalsoarrangedotheropportunitiesforthemtoperform,includingapartyAEMMPco-sponsoredwithUniversalMotownRepublicGroup,apartoftheUniversalMusicGroupconglomerate,whereaColumbiastudenthadaninternship.

NaomieMourino,astudentintheAEMMPclasswhohasactedasthe

label’sA&R(artistandrepertoire)representativetoPetLions,helpedconvincethebandtoattendSouthbySouthwestandarrangedtheirfourseparateperformancesattheconference.Thisexperience,andSinkovich’sconnections,landedheraninternshipthissummeratFlowerBooking,aChicagoagencythatarrangesconcertperformancesforalternativerockacts.

Thispastspring,shealsointernedatMintyFreshRecords,alocalindependentlabel.“IwasalwaysabletoconnectthedotsandunderstandthatmuchofwhatAEMMPdoesiswhatnormalrecordlabelsdo,”saysMourino,whograduatedinMaywithadegreeinarts,entertainmentandmediamanagement.“Wedefinitelywentthroughthetrialsandtribulationsofanyindependentrecordlabel.”

Arts,EntertainmentandMediaManagementisn’ttheonlyColumbiadepartmentthat’sattractingmedia-industryveterans.Inthefallof2009,Chicago Sun-TimesrockcriticJimDeRogatiscametothecollegeasanadjunctprofessorofEnglish.HehassincelefttheSun-TimesandjoinedColumbiaasafull-timefacultymember.DeRogatissaysthatitwassimplytherighttimetomakethejumpgiventheunsteadinessoftheSun-Times,whichnearlyfoldedlastyearbeforebeingpurchasedbyChicagofinancierJamesTyree.

Thisfall,he’llteachtwosectionsofReviewingtheArts,theclassthatfirstbroughthimtoColumbia,andacourseincareersinwritingthatwillencompasspublicrelations,marketing,blogging,andprintjournalism.He’llalsocontinuetoco-host,withChicago TribunerockcriticGregKot,Sound Opinions,atalkshowfocusingonpopularmusicthatissyndicatednationallybyChicagoPublicRadio.

DeRogatisworriesthat,ononehand,newspapers’strugglesarereducingtheirabilitytosupportin-depth

reportingandmaintaintheirwatchdogrole.Ontheotherhand,hepointsout,theInternetoffersmoreopportunitiesfortalentedwriterstoexpresstheirviews.“It’seasierforanybodywithanopiniontogetitoutthereasquickorquickerthanyoucanforaprofessionalnewsorganization,”hesays.

“Iremainoptimisticthatadiligentreporterwho’satalentedwriterwithastorynooneelsehasisgoingtoremainsomethingofworth,”DeRogatissays.“Howmuchworthandwhatinstitutionremainstopayforthatreporterremainstobeseen.”

TheAEMMprogramisrespondingtothemusicindustry’sconvulsionsinwaysthatextendbeyondAEMMPRecords.Ineachofthepasttwosemesters,SinkovichtaughtacoursetitledNewMediaStrategies,whichfocusesononlineandmobilewirelessmusicsales,promotion,andlegalissues.“It’saprettykeyelement,becauseobviously,that’swherethemusicindustryisshiftingrightnow,”Sinkovichsays.Accordingly,themerchandisetableattheBigScienceshowsoldcardswithcodesforonlinedownloadsoftheirrecord,Skyscraper Sound.

Studentsalsobenefitfromtheexperienceofseveralhigh-profile

membersofChicago’smusicindustrywhoteachcoursesatColumbia.Lastfall,JimPowers,thefounderandownerofMintyFreshRecords,taughttheIndependentLabelManagementclass.“IwasjustbringingsomeoftheprinciplesthathaveguidedmyreasoningandsomeofthelessonsI’velearnedtothetableforyoungpeoplethatareinterestedingettingintothisfield,”saysPowers,whohasrunMintyFreshfor17yearsandpreviouslyworkedforthemajorlabelsGeffenRecordsandBMGInternational.

Powers’sstudentsalreadywereinvolvedinvariousmusic-relatedprojects,andmuchoftheclassfocusedonassessingactualsituationstheywerefacing.“Asa

class,wecouldprovidesolutionsanddecision-makingprocessessotheymakethoughtful,well-educateddecisions,whethertheyweremanagingaband,anartistthemselves,orhavetheirownsmallrecordlabel,”Powerssays.“Youhavetocontinuallyreadapt,becausethere’snotafixedmodelanymore.”

Anothernewinstructor,ChrisKaskie,isthepublisherandchiefoperatingofficerofPitchforkMedia,thewildlypopularonlinemusicmagazine.KaskietaughtDecisionMakingintheMusicBusinessduringboththefallandspringterms,guidingstudentsthroughconsiderations

aboutissuessuchascontracts,publishing,licensing,andintellectualproperty.Inadditiontocasestudiesdrawnfromhisexperienceasamusicindustryobserver,heofferedstudentsafirst-handperspectivewhenAppleCorp.acquiredandthendecidedtoshutdownLala,anonlineservicethatPitchforkusedtostreammusiconitswebsite.

Inresponsetothefile-sharing-drivenexpectationthatmusicshouldbefree,Kaskiechallengedhisclasstothinkcreativelyabouthowtocreatevalueforit.“Thestudentsultimatelyaretheoneswhowillbeintheworkforceandchargedwithfixingthings,”hesays.“Howdoyoudistributeyourmusic,howdoyou

BrianMcKinney,anAEMMmajorwithamusicbusinessconcentration,tookbothPowers’sandKaskie’sclasses.“Theywerelikeaone-twopunchthatanyonewhowantstobeinthemusicbusinessneedstotake,”hesays.

aneofilmnoirinblack-and-whiteprint.Itpacksapunch—notinsuchshorthandassmoke-filledshadows,butinitspervasivedoom.Sakeyadministersaworkmanliketaleofgreedandcunning,bothgreatandpetty,inhisfourthnovel.Fourcasualdrinkingbuddiescajoleeachotherintooneoftheauthor’spatented“good-people-in-over-their-heads”dilemmaswhenafoolproofvictimlesscrimegoeshaywire.Itneveroccurstothemthatcrimessometimescomeinpairs.Partofthefunisinguessingjusthowmanywaystheschemecangowrong.Theansweris,allofthem.

Thestoryshiftspointsofviewbetweenthreemore-or-lessalphamalesandafemaletravelagentwhobecomesmorethanfriendswithmorethanoneofthem.Atimiddoormanwhoistiredofbeingadoormatcolludeswithacoke-ybrokerandasympatheticbutfinanciallydesperatebartender.Alloftheseappealingcharactersengageinsomewrestlingoverloyaltyandmoralrelativism,whilethemenacingbadguysdowhatevertheywant—abigadvantageforthem.ThemainactionoccursinandaroundaLincolnAvenuebar;thesettingiseffortlesslyChicagointhenewDepression.Thepaceofactionmovesfromaleisurelycheckermatchtoanexplosionofgametheorystratagemsasthestakesexponentiallyrise.

OneofSakey’sgiftsisacinematicpowertopropelyoualonghis

Accidental LessonsisDavidW.Berner’seloquentlycraftedmemoirofexperiencesasarookieteacheratCowherdMiddleSchoolinAurora,Illinois.Thememoiralsobringsinaconstellationofeventsandsituationsthatchangedhislifeduringthatyear:hisdecisiontoleaveacareerasabroadcastjournalist,hisdivorceanditseffectonhiskids,hisfather’sdeath,andanofferofatenure-trackpositioninColumbiaCollege’sRadiodepartment.

Berner’suseoflanguageisstriking,andhehasasharpeyefordetailthatmakesthenarrativecompelling.HedescribeswalkingintoCowherdforthefirsttime:“Theglassdoorshadwhatappearedtobepermanentsmudgesonthem;therewerechipsoutofthesideglasspanels,blemishesleftfromsomeonethrowingstones.”Hebringsthe

readersmackdabintothemiddleofhisexperienceatCowherdwiththestudentsandcolleaguesheencountersthere,suchasbreakingupafight,tryingtostopateenfromgettingherearspiercedinthehallway,attendingastudent’sbaseballgameonaweeknight,hiscontinualeffortstohelphisstudentsengageintheirlearningandimprovetheiracademics,andtheheartbreakingnewsthatthemotherofoneofhisstudentshasbeenmurdered.

OneremarkablequalityofthememoirisBerner’scandidportrayalofhimselfduringatimewhenhislifeseemstobecomingapartattheseams.Hevividlyconveysaprecarioustimeashestruggledwithdifficulties,openedhimselftonewpossibilities,anddealtwithepiphaniesrisingfromtumultuouschange.Hewritesthat,towardtheendofhisyearasaninstructoratCowherd,“Muchofwhathappenedattheschoolinthoselastfewweeksbecamewiredtomypsyche.Allthatseemedforeignmonthsagonowfeltoddlynormal.Lessthanayearago,IwascluelessaboutwhatIwasgettinginto,wheremylifewasheaded.ButCowherdanditsstudentshadmadeamarkonme,acattlebrandsearedintomysoul.”Accidental LessonsbrimswithmemorabletouchesofBerner’spersonalodysseythroughapivotaltimeinhislife.

Inthisbookofcarefullycomposed,color-saturatedphotographs—nearlyallofthemportraits—JenniferGreenburgoffersentryintotherockabillysubcultureofwhichsheisbothparticipantandobserver.Takenbetween2001and2009,mostlyintheChicagoarea(whereGreenburg,whoteachesphotographyatColumbia,lives),thephotosinitiallyappeartohavebeenshotabout50yearsearlier.

Inthebook’sintroduction,Greenburgexplainshowherinvolvementintheclose-knitrockabillycommunityinitiallyevolvedfromasharedaesthetic.Thatparticularaesthetic—withitspoodlesandpompadours;crinolinesandcredenzas;dinettesets,tikibars,andpincurls—isemblematicofaneraofoptimism,afictionalAmericaofhappysuburbanfamilieswithstylishcars,bright-eyedchildren,andeasylives.ThecravingforthisAmericandreamisatthesubculture’scenter:therockabillies,Greenburgnotes,were“activelypursuinga1950slifestyleofmarryingyoung,movingtothesuburbs,andhavingchildren.Theydidnotcaremuchfortheinsandoutsofpolitics...

andtheyweren’tlosingsleepovertheeconomy,AIDS,orRoe v. Wade.”Shefound“asubcultureofpeoplewhohadmostlyturnedawayfromthehorrorsofcontemporaryAmericanculturetofocusonfamily,friends,music,andvintageAmericana.”

Thisescapismmayseemirresponsiblynaïveonalevel,butGreenburg’ssubjectsknowinglypickandchoosetheelementsthatdefinetheirsubculture.Theycreateafantasylifestylemodeledonfictionalizeddepictionsofanidealfromanerabeforemostofthemwereborn—withtotalself-awareness.AsGreenburgnotes,herinterestinthisvisionofthepastallowsher“tobethearchitectofadreamworldconstructedentirelyinmyownimagination.”

Inherinsightfulcontributiontothebook,“TheCulture,Style,andArtoftheRockabillies,”essayistAudreyMichelleMastcontextualizesthesepeople’scommitment“notjustasanaesthetic,butasanidentity.”MastinvokesJeanBaudrillard’sconceptofthesimulacrumtoexplainthenatureofthislifestyle,inwhichtheinventedorcreatedlifestyleis“neitheralikenessnoracopyofhistoricalreality,”butanewlyinventedtruth,morerealthanthatwhichinspiredit.

GreenburgrecallsherowndisillusionmentwithBush-eraAmerica;howshe,andother

membersoftherockabillysubculture,felt“defeatedandhopeless”asthenationenteredaperiodof“mediocrityandfundamentalism.”Mastpointsoutthatrockabillyculture,neitheranti-establishmentnorfundamentalist,is“aninward-looking”versionofconservatism.Incorporatingastrongsharedaesthetictoidentifyoneanother,therockabilliesseektobuildalike-mindedcommunitywhileleavingtherestoftheworldalone.Greenburg’sbookgivesafascinatingglimpseintotheirworld.
