Singularity University Labs is a community of local and global startups using accelerating technologies such as robotics, Artificial Intelligence, 3D printing, nanotechnology, synthetic biology, and others in sectors such as education, health, space, security, energy, environment & more.

From its inception, Singularity University has focused on taking exponential technologies beyond the classroom and into the world, with the goal of addressing humanity’s biggest challenges. The 109 Impact Project has been a central part of the flagship Graduate Studies Program and those team projects are in many ways the centerpiece of an SU education.

Singularity University Labs provides programs and space where the SU community can collaborate to build the next great global solutions by leveraging exponential technologies in an interdisciplinary way. Supported by our exceptional faculty, alumni, corporate partners, and a growing network of mentors and investors, startups and projects in Singularity University Labs receive the guidance, education, support, and connections necessary to build successful companies that can impact the world.

The Singularity University Labs team includes Gabriel Baldinucci, Sandy Miller, and Mikhail Holst.

9TH SeNSe The goal of 9th Sense is simple: to build reliable, inexpensive, high quality telepresence robots that are usable by anyone. The hardware and software are open source, which allows users to customize their bots to their own needs. By choosing custom sensor sets and having the ability to develop their own apps for the bot, users will be able to achieve an enhanced sense of the remote environment. Starting with zoom lenses and simple sensors (e.g. infrared, touch, sonic, etc), 9th Sense aims to create an immersive experience with multispectral views.

BlUeOAk ReSOURCeS BlueOak Resources, a venture from SU’s 2010 Graduate Studies Program, won Harvard Business School’s second annual Alumni New Venture Contest. The company raised an initial round of funding led by Kleiner Perkins in September 2011. BlueOak provides a distributed and domestic solution for e-waste recycling. We aim to enable circular integration in the technology supply chain, converting the e-waste of today into a sustainable source of metals and rare earths for the technologies of tomorrow. Using existing scaled-up mining industry technologies, they hope to capture value from the 40 million tons of “e-waste” that is landfilled or incinerated annually around the world, containing 70 billion dollars worth of precious and base metals.

GeNOMe COMPileR Genome Compiler is building the next generation of computer-aided design tools for synthetic biology. In the age of Synthetic Biology, we need tools for designing, debugging and compiling genetic code; a genome compiler. Genome Compiler was inspired by the breakthrough achievement of “booting up” a synthetic bacteria by using a human-assembled genome (the program that runs a cell) that took place in the J. Craig Venter Institute. Our vision is to democratize the tools of creation, unleashing innovation in biotechnology that will enable a more sustainable future.

evOlUTiONARy SOlUTiONS Evolutionary Solutions is an early stage biotechnology venture focused on developing a novel technology for oligonucleotide-free DNA synthesis, capable of scaling from primer- to genome-length. They have received funding through Singularity University’s SynBio Launchpad program to develop a prototype of this proprietary system, which has the potential to offer significant increases in write length and sequence fidelity along with a drastic cost reduction in gene synthesis.

JOiNTly Jointly enriches current wellness, disease management and hospital readmission processes by enabling patients and providers to collaboratively take action on unique insights derived from high frequency, remote health data thus substantially reducing care costs. Our approach utilizes new technologies that combine new high-frequency health data with performance policies and unsupervised learning to discover important relationships between variables and then tracks the frequency and velocity of change in order to characterize the effectiveness of a given treatment/action pattern.

SCANAdU Scanadu is changing the way that people interact with health. To create a new era of healthcare – consumer medicine – we must bring the tools only found in hospitals and doctors’ offices to the rest of the world, in beautiful and simple ways.Scanadu has built a team of 20+ scientists,

“makers”, and engineers to bring this vision of consumer medicine to life. The company is funded with $4.2 million and is at the pre-manufacturing stage for its first product, SCOUT™, a handheld device that scans and educates in real time. Connected to other users in the network, we will see a type of health prediction never before seen.

APPiTUde Appitude was created in 2010 to develop an exciting new experience in ebook reading. Our goal is to move reading from a solitary activity, to a social movement. As ebook readers, many digital devices are currently under-utilized, ignoring the wireless connectivity built into them that can transform reading into a powerful and engaging experience. Founders Armand Morin and VJ Anma set out to give the ebook market some ‘Appitude,’ by joining social networking and the reading process.

CiviGUARd CiviGuard is dedicated to changing the current emergency communications landscape by bringing location-aware, cloud-based and smart phone-optimized services to metropolitan citizens the world over. As a team project from the inaugural summer of Singularity University’s Graduate Studies Program, Civiguard (formerly XIDAR Systems), strove to develop mobile phone applications and portable medical technologies to assist civilians and officials alike in crisis, disaster and pandemic situations. Their original application allowed individuals to receive integrated, reliable information from local authorities and qualified professionals to find safety, aid and resources – painting a comprehensive picture of the ground situation in times of crisis.

H2020 As Start Up Chile Winners, GSP10 Water Team Project H2020 strives to improve public knowledge about water issues in slums, increase the efficiency with which information is gathered and published, and stimulate implementation of scalable solutions. Mobile devices are used to collect data on water quantity, quality, access and price in communities. This “crowdsourced” information is combined with data from other sources (like water poverty reports and satellite images) and publish it using a map-based format. Smart phones are used to capture, analyze and publish real time data at a watershed level, raising involvement in conservation, improving data management for corporations, and fostering better per-dollar returns on policies relating to watershed management.

GeTAROUNd Getaround, a car sharing marketplace where individuals can offer their own cars for rent, started as a Energy Team Project in the inaugural Graduate Studies Program of 2009 – anticipating the advent of robotic cars. As TechCrunch Disrupt NYC 2011 Winners, Getaround aims at matching urban dwellers without cars and car owners looking to make some extra cash. In addition to changing legislation in two states to make it easier for car-owners to share their cars, Getaround is now the largest peer-to-peer car sharing service in the space. They provide insurance, 24 hour roadside assistance, a car-kit, an iPhone and Web app (which lets you conveniently locate, access, and unlock the car you’re renting without ever having to see its owner).

MAde iN SPACe MADE IN SPACE, a venture from SU’s 2010 Graduate Studies Program, is dedicated to providing print-on-demand solutions for manufacturing in space. Upon the successful completion of testing 3D printers in zero-gravity, several objects were printed in a simulated space environment optimized for complete strength-to-mass ratio. The advantages of 3D printing include limited material waste, the ability to build complex geometries, immediate production time, and minimal human involvement. They hope to revolutionize the way we currently look at space exploration, commercialization, and mission design.

NATivOO Nativoo is a startup created by SU’s 2011 Gradu-ate Studies Program students (Cristovao Loureiro and Francisco Palao), to organize the overloaded internet content for travel destinations and help people to better explore the world we live in. Their award-winning artificial intelligence structure continuously learns user interests through a web and a mobile platform and gives travelers their own perfect advice on what to do and where to go in otherwise foreign cities, as if they were a local. Nativoo was present on TechCrunch Disrupt 2012 and is based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
