    daily tasks. In the beginning he attempts to avoid his

    family and office manager. They believe he has become ill

    and are wondering why he hasnt come into work.He

    engages in physical confrontations with his family through

    his frustration. His family is so repulsed by his image that

    he crawls into his room, reflects on how his family feels

    about him, and dies. After his death, the family lives a

    much better life. They take trolley rides to the countryside,

    they upgrade their apartment, they fire the people that tookcare of Gregor, and the Grete regains her strength and

    beauty back in which she considers marriage.

    3.1919, the End of WWI4.S: Reading is about a soldier returning from home going

    through the struggle adjusting to home life. Hemingway

    illustrates the physical and mental adjustments Harold

    Krebs undergoes. Krebs has lost his ambition in life andhis ability to connect with society. These are all direct

    results of the traumatic stress he endured while overseas.

    the other nights of the round table. He is not helped by the

    King or his fellowship and is very lonely. One day he iswalking in the countryside by a stream and two ladies

    approach him. They say that their mistress is waiting for

    him. He meets the Lady and she continues to have a

    relationship with him in her tent as long as he keeps it a

    secret. If he keeps it a secret she will grant him with

    expensive clothes and gifts and he can give as much as he

    wants. The queen spots Lanval one day and tries to put

    sexual advances towards. He denies everything and she is

    disrespected and embarrassed. She tells the King lies

    saying she advanced on her. He is furious and sentences

    him to trail. The Barons that make up his jury say that if is

    loved one can come out and prove herself he can be set

    free. The Lady shows up and Lanval is free. They both

    ride out into the sunset of Avalon.

    up and they are able to speak from each others windows.

    The husband soon grows angry with the wifes

    disappearance in the night. She claims she wakes up so

    she can listen to the nightengales song. The husbandcommands his servants to capture the bird and they bring

    it to him alive. When the wife asks for the bird, he kills the

    bird in front of her and throws it onto her gown. The wife

    grows with sadness because she knows she will not be

    able to see her love anymore. She instructs the servant to

    take the dead bird to her love next door. The knight

    receives the gift and becomes sad. He puts the bird in a

    small coffin and carries it around for the rest of his life.Hills Like White Elephants

    Arab up the hill to Daru, the Arab- prisoner of Balducci.

    3.Takes place during the Algerian War4.S: Balducci leads an Arab prisoner to Daru. The prisoner

    has been accused of murdering his cousin. Balducci has

    orders to drop off the prisoner to Daru and then Daru is

    responsible for taking to the police station 20 km away.

    Daru refuses because he believes it is dishonorable and

    Balducci agrees. Balducci says that in war men must be

    prepared to do whatever it takes to win and leaves angry.

    Daru helps the prisoner out with directions, food, and

    money. In the end, the prisoner decides that his fate is in

    imprisonment and marches to the police station.

    Diary of a Madman1.Lu Xun/ Chinese/ 20thCentury2.Narrator, Young Boy, Madman, Important Politician,

    Elder Brother

    3.The story begins with the narrator's visit to a pair ofbrothers who were close friends of his during his

    school years. The older brother informs him that the

    younger one suffered from a mental illness but got

    better and took a job in another city. During the time of

    his illness the brother kept a diary that the narrator is

    allowed to read. This is the "madman's diary" and itstext constitutes the bulk of the story. The diary tells of

    the protagonist's growing obsession with the

    cannibalism which he believes is routinely practiced by

    those around him. He is convinced that sooner or later

    he will be eaten. As his paranoia increases, and with it

    his sense that cannibalism is widespread and prevalent

    even within his family, he despairs of saving himself.

    The diary ends with a poignant plea to "save thechildren."

    interactions with other individuals in society. He cannot

    interact with other people due to his alienation. He obesses

    whether he should yield walking in front of an officer inthe park. He invites himself to a party in which he was not

    invited and embarrasses himself. He attempts to rescue a

    young prostitute. He insults Liza. Hurt and confused, she

    leaves him in his apartment. Dostoevsky suggests that the

    Underground Man just decides to stop writing.
