What can I do to help my child study physics?

• Help to devise a weekly study plan• SQA past papers• Encourage pupils to attend supported

study (Every Monday after School) and to ask for help when required

• Reinforce the message that the more work a student puts in, the more success will be achieved

What materials does my child need to study physics?

• Scientific calculator, ruler and protractor• Class notes jotter• Homework booklets• SQA past papers (with solutions)• Formula sheet(s) (available from website)• A jotter or notepad specifically for past papers• Internet access for website and GLOW pages

(can do this at school)• A printer would be helpful to allow students to

print off electronic resources which best suit their study needs (Past Prelim/ Exam Papers can be borrowed from teachers on a LOAN basis)

Study Tips For Students

• Plan all of your time, including leisure

• Divide your work sensibly

• Stick to your plan

• Take frequent, short breaks

• Make an early start

• Don’t get ‘bogged down’ – move on

• All Advanced Higher and Higher Pupils have access to Scholar

• This provides them with additional notes, check up tests that get marked, records how long they spend on a test and gives the teacher access to the information.

How much homework?

• S3/S4 1.0 – 1.5 hours per week

• S5/S6 2.0 – 2.5 hours per week.

• Some of this will be set by the teacher but it is the pupils responsibility to do extra revision using all the resources already mentioned. See Physics Department HW Policy.
