Practical revision of basic restorative procedures led by TPD and Educational Supervisors allowing FDs to focus on the areas they feel practical revision of techniques would be most helpful.

Teaching/learning methods:

Hands on practical with phantom heads. Expected learning outcomes: At the end of the session all participants should be able to:

Demonstrate a range of clinical procedures which display the skills and dexterity expected of an early stage FD.

Describe different options to restore teeth and when they should be used.

Explain the rationale behind different restorative techniques. Give an account of the basic features of a clinical camera and how to take the standard

photographs needed to accompany a clinical case.

Review of information given to date with opportunities to raise queries and enter discussions on experiences in practice and during study days. This may include the e-Portfolio, in practice assessments and the assignment.

Teaching/learning methods:

Informal discussions and small group teaching.

Expected learning outcomes: At the end of the session all participants should be able to:

Describe the benefits of peer review in relation to highlighting and solving issues.

Give an account of common early concerns and experiences regarding the in practice assessment process.

Formulate an action plan that can be used to shape the first few months.

Formulate an action plan to allow the assignments to be completed on time and to a high standard.

TITLE: Endodontics

Please ensure you have appropriate clinical wear with you and bring along 2 or 3 posterior teeth with access cavities already prepared. All extracted teeth must be sterilised by the FD prior to attending the course, according to the following:

1. Immerse the extracted teeth in 5.25% sodium hypochlorite for 7 days 2. Autoclave at 134oc and 30 psi for 3 minutes (teeth must be free of amalgam

restorations to autoclave) Curriculum objectives covered: Clinical: 1.9, 10.3, 10.6 and 10.11 Essential content:

Pre endodontic assessment.

Instrumentation using Ni-Ti instruments.

‘Triniti’, ‘M Two’ and ‘Reciproc’ systems – hand and rotary.

Canal preparation techniques.

Medico-legal aspects. Teaching/learning methods:

Interactive seminar.

Practical work with endo blocks and extracted teeth.

Group discussion. Expected learning outcomes: At the end of the session all participants should be able to:

Formulate treatment plans for most patients requiring endodontics.

List some potential problems with endodontic treatment and how to deal with them.

Describe the appropriate use and limitations of endodontic instruments.

Obturate root canals effectively in a simulated case.

TITLE: Minor oral surgery

conducted on pigs heads. Curriculum objectives covered: Clinical: 2.1, 2.3 and 7.2 Essential content:

Pre-operative assessment.

Flap design, bone and tooth removal.

Use of elevators, suturing. Teaching/learning methods:

Short lectures.

Hands on practice. Expected learning outcomes: At the end of the session all participants should be able to:

Describe the principles of flap raising, bone and tooth removal in a MOS procedure.

Demonstrate flap raising, bone and tooth removal on pig model.

Give an account of how they would decide which MOS procedures to tackle in general practice and which to refer.

FDs are required to present a completed treatment planning case for a patient they have treated this term. A ten minutes powerpoint presentation followed by a five minutes discussion from the audience. Curriculum objectives covered: Communication: 14.1 and 14.2 Teaching/learning methods:

Group discussion/reflection on clinical outcomes of treatment plans. Expected learning outcomes: At the end of the session all participants should be able to:

Recognise the skills required to honestly reflect on their own treatment planning outcomes.

Give an account of how they plan and prioritise treatment.

Appraise their own and other’s dental photographs.

Demonstrate their progress for treatment planning by presenting a clinical case to their peers.
