WelcomeThe Isle of Wight is a walker’s dream, being located just a few miles from the mainland and two hours from London, and offering over 500 miles of well-maintained footpaths through spectacular scenery and terrain, making it the perfect place for a walking holiday or break. With footpaths that wind through fields and forests, and around 64 miles of coast paths adjacent to some of the Isle of Wight’s most dramatic coastline and beaches. The Autumn Walking Weekend gives you the opportunity to breathe in the beautiful scenery and autumnal colours the Island has to offer. There are walks for all ages and abilities, all led by our friendly and knowledgeable leaders, who will take you on a journey of mystery, intrigue and exploration as you traverse our countryside, woodland, pastures, meadows and footpaths of the Island. This years programme tops an incredible 100 walks to choose from, with a quarter being dinosaur related!

The Isle of Wight was crowned the ‘Dinosaur capital of Great Britain’ in January this year, and to support the raft of activities celebrating the Island’s incredible prehistoric history during the summer, the Autumn Walking Weekend is set to join in the celebrations, offering an incredible range of dinosaur walks, including one with Daisy Morris (the youngest Island ambassador) and her family, for a fossil hunt along the beach where she found her new species of pterosaur. Hunt for fossils with experts from Dinosaur Isle, walk with dinosaur plants at Ventnor Botanic Garden, or simply relax after a dino walk at the Enchanted Manor, for an enchanted Champagne high tea, coupled with a dinosaur quiz! For those a little younger, there is a ‘dinosaur noisy stomp’ at Appley Park, where toddlers have the chance to dress up as a dinosaurs! These are just a small sample of the dino walks we offer you this Autumn.

We have our good old favourite walks in the programme, along with a range of some exciting new ones. Step back in time and follow in the footsteps of the Poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson, Robert Hooke, John Milne or Jimi Hendrix. Or step out on our walks from rails, Ramblers walks, exploration walks, history walks, nature walks, speed dating, foodie walks, Nordic walking, adventures and even dawn chorus walks – if you can get up early enough!

Walking with Dinosaurs: The 3D Movie is a major new blockbuster from BBC Earth Films and Evergreen Films, presented by Twentieth Century Fox and Reliance Entertainment in association with IM Global, the film is set for global release in December 2013.

The Isle of Wight, crowned the ‘Dinosaur capital of Great Britain’ in January, has supported the summer film campaign with a raft of activities celebrating the Island’s incredible prehistoric history. From Summer 2013, Isle of Wight visitors are invited to experience a once in a lifetime journey using digital innovation to bring the Island’s history to life.

The Isle of Wight prepares to go Walking with Dinosaurs

Walking with Dinosaur TrailThe new Walking with Dinosaur Trail, based on the ancestral links between the characters in the film and the dinosaurs on the Isle of Wight, has given visitors to the Island the chance to be seen standing alongside dinosaurs in the very place they were discovered.Visitors will encounter technology allowing them to use their smart phones and tablets to take a picture of their family and friends walking alongside the dinosaurs that roamed the Isle of Wight 130 million years ago, while at the same time learn more about their relatives – the dinosaur characters in the movie. The augmented reality app will be available to download from anywhere in the world, but will only be triggered into life at six coastal locations on the Isle of Wight.Visitors will also be able to hop on board an Island Coaster bus service that will operate along the trail during the summer holiday period. The new bus service, operated by Southern Vectis, will be adapted to carry bikes in a specially converted compartment on the lower deck.Don’t forget to view the Dinosaurs you will need the Dinosaur Island app, which can be downloaded for supported Apple and Android devices from www.visitisleofwight.co.uk/dinosaur-island/dinosaur-island-trail

Meteorite ONEMeet Iguanodon at YaverlandThe Yaverland meteorite is close to the beach slipway at the eastern-most point of the car park. Here you’ll meet a great plant eating dinosaur called Iguanodon – a close relative of Edmontosaurus, a gentle giant who stars in Walking With Dinosaurs: The 3D Movie. Nearby, it’s just a short walk along the seafront to Dinosaur Isle, the UK’s first purpose built Dinosaur museum.

Meteorite TWOMeet Polacanthus at Bonchurch LandslipHead through the Smugglers Haven car park to a grassy dell

where you’ll discover the meteorite. Meet Polacanthus Fox – a plant eating species that was discovered here in 1869. It’s similar to the heavily armoured Ankylosaurus and Pachyrhinosaurus, who both star in Walking With Dinosaurs: The 3D Movie. Nearby, after viewing the dinosaur, enjoy refreshments at the Smugglers Haven tea room or check out the amazing geologyof the Bonchurch Landslip.

Meteorite THREEMeet Valdosaurus in VentnorHigh above the Spyglass Inn on Ventnor Esplanade is La Falaise car park. Join the footpath at the far end of the car park and walk along to find the meteorite. Come face to face with Valdosaurus – a rare plant-eating dinosaur with a small head, chunky body, and a very long tail. His ancestral link is to Parksosaurus from Walking With Dinosaurs: The 3D Movie. Nearby, pop in for a seaside drink at the Spyglass Inn or stroll further along the dramatic coastline to reach secluded Steephill Cove.

7

Page 8: Autumn walking weekend programme 2013

Meteorite fourMeet Caulkicephalus above Blackgang ChineFrom the viewpoint car park high above Blackgang Chine, enjoy the spectacular views along the coast towards the Needles. The meteorite is located in the northwest corner of the car park. You’ll find the flying reptile Caulkicephalus (which had a wingspan of 3-4 metres) come swooping into view. It is similar to Azhdarch, an enormous pterosaur that stars in Walking With Dinosaurs: The 3D Movie. Nearby, head to Blackgang Chine, the UK’s oldest theme park complete with its very own Dinosaur Land!

Meteorite FIVEMeet Neovenator at Hanover PointHead away from the Compton Beach car park towards the

beach and you will see the next meteorite on the trail ahead of you. Here you will encounter Neovenator, one of the largest and most ferocious flesh-eating predators in the dinosaur world. It is a slightly smaller version of Gorgosaurus, the villain in Walking With Dinosaurs: The 3D Movie. Nearby, don’t forget to visit Island Gems at Isle of Wight Pearl and the Dinosaur Expeditions, Conservation and Palaeoart Centre for more dinosaur information and guided fossil walks.

Meteorite SIXMeet Pelosaurus at the Needles BatteryHead along the cliff edge road to the Needles New Battery to find the final meteorite on the trail. Here you will meet Pelosaurus, a sauropod that is thought to have been 20 metres long when fully grown. The huge Gorgosaurus and Edmontosaurus in Walking With Dinosaurs: The 3D Movie are Late Cretaceous dinosaurs that replaced the earlier sauropods.

Maybe you’ve heard about the recent guidelines to take 10,000 steps a day? How far is this anyway? The average person’s stride length is approximately 2½ feet so it takes just over 2,000 steps to walk a mile. If you take 10,000 steps, you’ve walked nearly five miles!A sedentary person may only average 1,000 to 3,000 steps a day. For these people, adding 500 steps a day until you reach 10,000 is a reasonable goal. Wearing a pedometer is an easy way to keep track of your steps each day.

How many steps do you take in a day?

In keeping with the dino theme, Ventnor Botanic Gardens will be organizing a series of walks with dinosaur plants; aiming to bring the dinosaur experience to life. An exhibition of fossilised plants will be on show in the visitor centre. The collection is very kindly on loan from Dinosaur Isle and includes Monkey Puzzle tree trunks, Cycads and Ferns. Visitors will then be able to collect their ‘walking with dinosaur plants’ trail map (when paying full admission) and head out into the garden to discover the modern relatives of these prehistoric plants. With the trail map adults and children alike will be able to learn all about these plants as well as getting a first-hand experience of what they look, feel and smell like. All of the fossil specimens date back to the Cretaceous period of 125-110 million years ago. They were all collected from the south coast of the Isle of Wight from the eroding cliffs near Atherfield. All the fossils on show relate to modern plants that can be found growing at Ventnor Botanic Garden. Examples include, the Monkey Puzzle Tree, Modern Gymnosperms, Ginkgo Tree and modern tree ferns.John Curtis, Director of Ventnor Botanic Garden Community Company CIC said, ‘We want our visitors to get an experience they can’t get anywhere else. See the fossil, touch the plant – it brings the experience to life and we think you’ll be pushed to find that somewhere else.

The Isle of WightWhere else could you encounter downland, forests, rivers and dramatic coastline, all in the course of a day’s walking? This is easily achievable on an Island measuring approximately 23 miles long and 13 miles wide, with over 500 miles of well-maintained, signposted footpaths, and 60 miles of coastline. In fact over half the Island is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Letters/numbers in red circles N indicate the approximate

starting point of each walk. These are shown on each walk description.

Daisy Morris - The Island’s youngest ambassadorThere will also be a great opportunity to join ‘young’ Daisy Morris (our youngest Island ambassador) and her family, along with Martin Simpson, for a fossil hunt along the beach where she found her new species of pterosaur (Walk no. 57, Wellington boots advised to be worn). The young Isle of Wight girl fascinated by all things dinosaur has made an incredible discovery on an Island beach. The fossil turned out to be a completely new genus and species of small pterosaur, a flying reptile from 115 million years ago in the Lower Cretaceous period, which because of the Island’s eroding coastline, would without doubt have been washed away and destroyed if it had not been found by Daisy. They have named it Vectidraco daisymorrisae: the generic name Vectidraco meaning ‘dragon from the Isle of Wight’, while the species name honours Daisy Morris, who discovered the specimen and donated it to The Natural History Museum in London. Daisy herself is a fascinating and unique little girl – she has an amazing collection of real and fossilised bones, shells, skulls and teeth, and her bedroom at her home in Whitwell now resembles a natural history museum. Daisy has made appearances on BBC TV and also on Blue Peter.

This friendly walk gives you the chance to meet the perfect person of your dreams or just have a lot of fun with like-minded people, and create platonic friendships, for walking partners, or a trip to the cinema or country pub. Why not give it a try? Make a date and join us!The start and finish of the walk will be from the Beach Café in Sandown, at 10.30am. We will walk to the Fisherman’s Cottage in Shanklin for coffee before returning to the Beach Café for socialising and lunch. Registration forms are available on www.isleofwightwalkingfestival.co.uk

ISLE OF WIGHT RAMBLERS ‘DONATE A GATE’

SCHEME During this year’s spring walking festival a collection was made, and there will also be a collection during the Autumn Walking Weekend on a selection of walks in the programme, to help fund a new footpath gate and plaque that will celebrate the 15th anniversary of our Isle of Wight Walking Festival.

This will be part of the IOW Ramblers ‘Donate a Gate’ scheme that in the last three years has replaced over 70 stiles

with gates to improve access on stretches of footpath across the Island.

On Monday 28 October a special walk is scheduled around the new Joan Deacon

Memorial Trail in Rookley during which the Walking Festival Gate will be formally opened. Joan was founder member of the Isle of Wight Ramblers. (See page 40 for full details)

For lovers of walking and the countryside a commemorative footpath gate is an opportunity to set up a memorial that will provide practical ease of access to fellow walkers for years to come.

The Isle of Wight Ramblers and the Isle of Wight Council Rights of Way department supported by our local National Trust

have established the footpath ‘Donate a Gate’ scheme. An individual donation of £460 will finance a new footpath gate incorporating a locally engraved commemorative oak plaque at a suitable location on the Island.

By identifying suitable stretches of footpath to be wholly converted to gates, we are improving access to the countryside for those people who cannot easily negotiate stiles.

You can contact the scheme organiser to find out where current projects are underway.

101 Dinosaur Walk in aid of BBC Children in Need

This sponsored walk is aimed at family participation and a great opportunity to raise money for BBC Children in Need.

Walkers will be taken on a prehistoric journey from Blackgang Chine to Compton Bay. Starting at Blackgang Viewpoint car park, you will be met by walk leader Martin Neville who will take you to the first meteorite at Blackgang Chine. Here you will find the flying reptile Caulkicephalus swooping into view (you will need to download the Dinosaur Island app to have your photo taken with dinosaurs – see details below). This dinosaur is similar to Azhdarch, an enormous pterosaur that stars in Walking With Dinosaurs: The 3D Movie.Walkers then leave Blackgang heading towards the meteorite at Compton Bay, where you can meet the Neovenator at Hanover Point. This dinosaur is one of the largest and most ferocious flesh-eating predators in the dinosaur world. It is a slightly smaller version of the Gorgosaurius, the villain in Walking With Dinosaurs: The 3D Movie. Once at the second location, walkers will be given an educational glimpse into the lives of these historic creatures and photos can again be taken. Registration for the walk is essential.
