We proudly welcome our new Heimbold Chair and documentary filmmaker, Maurice Fitzpatrick Maurice Fitzpatrick and his family to Villanova this semester. Maurice will be teaching two film classes, and give a public talk at Villanova on March 12. His acclaimed film, In The Name of Peace: John Hume in America will be shown on February 25th, at the Museum of the American Revolution, where Maurice will lead a post-screening discussion. We are proud to announce an expansion of our digitization efforts with Falvey Library, thanks to two generous grants from the Gladys Brooks Foundation and the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation . We are also fortunate to co-sponsor of an academic symposium this semester for sixteen leading Irish literature scholars, "The Referent of Ireland in the Nineteenth Century. " The symposium is organized by our very talented scholar, Dr. Mary Mullen, whose book, Novel Institutions , was just published last August by Edinburgh University Press. Friday, February 21: The Referent of Ireland in the Nineteenth-CenturySymposium

This symposium will feature 10-minutepresentations by experts in nineteenth-

century literature in response to a set ofshared readings about referentiality, thatis how literature refers to the world beyondtext. It builds on exciting new work onreferentiality in nineteenth-centuryliterature studies. The symposium hopesto re-evaluate the importance ofnineteenth-century Irish literature--oftenseen as too addressed to Britishaudiences to be taught as authentically"Irish" and as too technically weak or toohistorically-rooted be taught as "Romantic"or "Victorian" literature.

Deputy Robert Troy is Fianna Fáil's FrontbenchSpokesperson on Business, Enterprise and Innovation.He has served as a public representative for the peopleof Westmeath at Local level since 2004. He previouslyserved as the Party's Frontbench Spokesperson onTransport, Tourism and Sport, at which time he was astrong advocate for regional development. Deputy Troy isnow responsible for the party's policy for Business,Enterprise and Innovation. Mary Madec, PhD, was born and raised in Mayo, Ireland.She is currently Director of the Villanova Study AbroadProgram in Galway. In 2003 she started submitting poetryfor publication and since that time she has published twovolumes of poetry In Other Words (2010) and DemeterDoes Not Remember (2014) both from Salmon Poetry. InSpring 2007 she was chosen for the Poetry IrelandIntroductions Series and for the WINDOWS ShowcaseReadings and Anthology. In 2008 she also won theprestigious Hennessy XO Award for Emerging Poetry.

Monday, April 6: "The Politics of the Irish Harp Symbol from Henry VIII toBrexit" Lecture with Mary Louise O'Donnell

Mary Louise O’Donnell Ph.D. is aharpist, musicologist and Fulbright scholar2019/20. Her first book Ireland's Harp: theShaping of Irish Identity c.1770 to1880 was published by UCD Press in 2014and she has also published widely ontopics relating to Irish cultural history,semiotics, and performance studies. MaryLouise and her sister Teresa have just

completed the recording of an album whichincludes compositions for pedal harp,portable Irish harp, and voice to harpaccompaniment by the nineteenth-centuryIrish composer Charles Egan.

Thursday, April 23: Shirley Wong, PhD, “Contemporary Irish Poetry andthe Creative Economy” Lecture

Dr. Shirley Wong will deliver a talk drawn fromher book on globalization and contemporaryIrish poetry, specifically occasional poetry, whichmemorializes a specific event. Wong argues thatIrish poets exploit the occasional poem’s historicties in order to critique Ireland's creativeeconomy schemes (e.g. UNESCO City ofLiterature; Per Cent for Art Scheme; WorldCities Culture Forum). Focusing on PaulaMeehan's work, she argues that occasionalpoetry dramatizes the capitalist crisis ofcontemporary Irish literature, which has beentransformed by Ireland’s rapid financialization

since the 1980s.
