New Hampshire was one of the thirteen colonies that rebelled against British rule during the American Revolution. By the time of the American Revolution, New Hampshire was a divided province. It was the first state to declare its independence.

1. Peterborough is the inspiration for the town of Grover's Corners, in Thornton Wilder's play Our Town.
2. The novel Peyton Place was inspired by Gilmanton, New Hampshire.
3. John Knowles based the Devon School in A Separate Peace on the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter.
4. The prep school in John Irving's The World According to Garp was also based on the Phillips Exeter Academy.
