It has been an action-packed end to the Autumn Term, with many of the recent events showcased in this Christmas edition of HT News. There have been so many highlights in recent weeks, including our end of term Christmas events. Last week we had two Music Concerts which showcased the talents of our musicians in Year 8-11. We also had our HT Mock General Election which was an excellent opportunity for our students to learn much more about the UK’s voting and election process. On Wednesday last week we had our wonderful Christmas Carol Service at Haileybury Chapel which was very much enjoyed by students and staff. We supported Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day last Friday and along with our cake sale organised by Year 7, we raised nearly £700 in total. On Tuesday this week it was wonderful to celebrate this summer’s Year 11 and Year 13 exam results at our Certificates Evening, and we have also had events for this term’s most hard working and committed students before finishing term today with our Achievement Assemblies. Thank you for your support for the school throughout 2019. It has been a really successful year for our students and staff with an uplift in GCSE, vocational and A Level exam results in the summer. Highlights included the wonderful Year 11 maths results which showed that our students made significantly greater progress from Key Stage 2 compared to students of the same ability profile nationally. We had great success in many subject areas in the sixth form, and our students secured a wide range of great destinations in the world of work and in higher education beyond HT. Following our work with Channel 4 and our secret entrepreneur, Paul Rowlett, we secured significant new resources for our students including over 100 new specialist PCs which our students have benefited from in Art & Photography, Media and Design & Technology this term, and there will be new opportunities for students in Business in the new year as a result of Paul’s support. The opportunity to work with Channel 4 has made a huge difference to the quality of education we have been able to provide to students in these curriculum areas. Next year we expect to see new classrooms being built to go alongside the fully refurbished Science laboratories that Professor Robert Winston opened this term. We are fully staffed for January 2020 and look forward to another successful twelve months for the school, improving the quality of the education that we can provide for your children. I wish all students and families a very Happy Christmas and peaceful New Year

Curriculum Round-up

The partnership between Haileybury and Haileybury Turnford strengthened with a day of masterclasses for students from both schools

Students enjoyed a series of sessions including one which posed the question: ‘What is success?’, others explored the academic importance of economics. Teachers from both schools delivered talks before the day was rounded off by Patrick McCrae, co-founder and CEO of art company Artiq, who encouraged the Lower School and Year 7 students to aim high.

“We needed to improve the attainment and aspirations of the high-achieving students,” said Mr Datta, Haileybury Turnford’ s Partnership Director of School Improvement. “We thought the best way of doing that is to start in Year 7. That way we can build up a culture of aspiration from the very beginning, exposing them to co-curricular activities and they will gain a much broader understanding of the world and ultimately, we believe this will help them to achieve highly, not just at school but beyond.” The aim is to have at least two such events each term with older students eventually acting as mentors for younger year groups.

There are also plans to introduce GCSEs such as Astronomy and Latin – both taught at Haileybury – which could be integrated into the Haileybury Turnford curriculum.

Annual Mayoral Debate

Haileybury Turnford participated in the annual Mayoral Debate on Wednesday 4th December, alongside six other local schools from the Broxbourne area. The six students representing our school were Lilly Richardson, Andrew Cartwright, Danny Smith, Tate Lambie, Francesca Sorce and Bradley Bolton. Their performance was truly outstanding; they were passionate, concise and very authentic. The arguments were compelling, yet they shrewdly found perfect moments to make it a little light-hearted. Francesca Sorce’s electric questioning for the opposition drew breaths away in the first round, which planted the tone that was expected from our valiant team.

Inspiring Dance workshop at HT HT Dancers had a fabulous workshop with Mel Simpson from Strawberry Dance on 11th December. She led an intense and inspiring Jazz workshop with our Year 11 and 12 Dancers to support their BTEC curriculum. We also welcomed Sixth Form students from Robert Barclay Academy which proved a great opportunity to collaborate with another local school. Thank you both to Strawberry Dance for leading our workshop and to RBA for joining us too.

HT’s Carol Service at Haileybury Chapel

On Wednesday 11th December we had our Carol Service at Haileybury Chapel. It was a splendid occasion for our school community, providing an opportunity for our Year 7 and 8 students, staff and families to come together and reflect on the Christmas story. Music was provided by Seval Basri and Dante Barzey, accompanied by Mrs Nicholson. Readings were from Year 7 students Adam Beat and Gabriella Newallo-Ragbir, Year 8 students Louie Mabbett and Madelina Zavadovschi, Head Boy James Evenden and also from Mr Newman. We were also fortunate that Hailebury’s Chamber Choir sung. Our thanks to Reverend Dominic Newstead for leading this years’ service and making it such an enjoyable part of the HT Christmas season. Our Year 7 students had a creative writing task to write about their experience at the Carol Service, a selection of their brilliant work can be found towards the end of the newsletter.

Athletic Trophy for Year 10 student Congratulations to Alexa Forster who was awarded the Most Promising Young Athlete trophy for 2019 at her Athletics Club at the beginning of December.

Year 11 & 13 Certificates Evening

Thank you to all parents, students and staff who attended our Certificates Evening on Tuesday evening this week. A fantastic time was had by all, with tea and festive cakes. Students who completed Year 11 last year were present to receive their certificates, as were former Year 13 students. We were delighted to welcome back so many of our students and it was great to hear their stories of how life at university or in the world of work is progressing.

As well as receiving their certificates, four of our students were presented with academic achievement and progress awards. These included Sam Marendaz and Andreea Lazar from Year 11 and Liam Kline and Danny Phillips from Year 13. Congratulations to all!

Year 7 & 8 Top Readers

Congratulations to our top 12 readers this term from both Year 7 and 8. They were invited to the Library on Wednesday morning to celebrate their achievements and be presented with their certificate and a cupcake. Well done to all.

Music lessons at HT for Brookland Junior School pupils

Year 5 pupils from Brookland Junior School have had music lessons taught by Mrs Nicholson, our Subject Leader for Music throughout this term at HT.

It was been excellent to work in partnership with Brookland Junior School’s pupils and staff to provide these opportunities. Mr Newman, recently visited a Year 5 lesson: “The Year 5 children looked to be thoroughly enjoying themselves and were responding brilliantly to working in our specialist music room. We look forward to working with another Year 5 class from Brookland Junior School next term and hope this collaboration goes from strength to strength.”

Mock Election held at HT

During assemblies over the run up to the General Election, students learnt about our election process. Part of this included a ‘Meet the Parties’ event on Monday 9th December. On Tuesday 10th December, all students had the opportunity to vote in HT’s Mock General Election.

With 263 votes (37%) the Conservatives took the election. However, they were closely followed by the Liberal Democrats with 223 votes (32%). Labour came in third place with 183 votes (26%) in total. The Green Party came in fourth place with 35 votes (5%). There was 82% turnout from our student body.

Due to our first past the post voting system it means the Conservatives won the election ballot despite not gaining an overall majority of votes. This therefore means that if the school was the constituency of Broxbourne, the Conservatives would have won the seat in Parliament.

The Conservatives managed to win the most votes in 4 of our 6 Houses, with the Liberal Democrats winning the remaining two. Labour managed to come second in two of the House votes.

Carol Service – Creating Writing task

Our Year 7 students were tasked to write about our Carol Service which took place at Haileybury Chapel. A selection can be found below from Gabriella Newallo-Ragbir, Courtney Riches, Adam Beat and James Hajdu. Well done to all students who took part.

“On Wednesday 11th December 2019, Year 7 and Year 8 students were invited to attend Haileybury to participate in a Carol Service in their Chapel. At this service, I was chosen to read a passage from The Old Testament to the congregation. When I arrived at the Chapel after the short coach journey, I was very shocked as it was a very grand and magnificent building. The doors to the Chapel were welcoming and I felt comfortable going in. Inside, it had elaborate and intricate designs on the stone walls and pillars. The ceiling had gold writing encircling the grand dome. At the beginning of the celebration, we were welcomed by the Reverend, we then stood up and sang the first carol. Afterwards, the Reverend guided us through the Lord’s Prayer and we all said Amen at the end. This was followed by the readings performed by the chosen students and the Principal.

I started to feel anxious and worried as my time to complete my reading was approaching. When hearing the Reverend ask for the two readers to come up to the altar, I began to feel even more nervous as I did not want to mess up my speech in front of everyone. As I grabbed the microphone, I knew I needed to speak clearly and not rush through my speech. After delivering my speech, I felt proud and was relieved that I had not messed it up. After me, Mr Newman addressed the congregation with his speech and following this the Reverend began the closing of the celebration which ended after the final prayer.

To end the day, we were directed into a huge hall where we had orange juice and biscuits. We socialised with each other for a short while before heading back to the coach for our return journey to Haileybury Turnford.” Gabriella Newallo-Ragbir – Year 7

“On Wednesday 11th December we went to Haileybury for a Carol service. First of all, Year 7 and Year 8 students met in the main hall and waited for the coaches to arrive. Then we walked down Mill Lane quickly, so not to arrive at Haileybury late. I was on coach 2 and I sat next to my friend Grace. The short journey to Haileybury was fun.

On arrival, we saw a huge dome with a spire pointing towards the sky. I was really nervous as we were about to enter a private school and didn’t want to get anything wrong. The chapel was also huge and inside was so neat and tidy. I felt relaxed as I walked in and sat next to my best friend.

During the service, we sang three carols and I lost my voice through the second one. We sang: Away in a Manager, O Come all ye Faithful and A Little Town of Bethlehem. After, everyone went into the hall and we had juice and biscuits. My friends and I took more. We were very sneaky! Finally, we left for the coach. I sat next to Grace again and we had a fun time.” Courtney Riches – Year 7

Page 7: students to learn much more about the UKs voting …...students to learn much more about the UKs voting and election On Wednesday last week we had our wonderful Christmas Carol Service

“The Carol service was a daunting task for me. We walked out into the cool winter’s breeze. I stepped carefully along the road, making sure not to tread in any puddles. We made it to the cosy double-decker that we would be taking to Haileybury, our destination.

We arrived and I respectfully climbed out of the warm bus. Then I saw it, Haileybury Chapel, white as the White House and majestic as a unicorn. It was almost like it wasn’t real, like something out of a myth. The cobbled path took us to the Chapel, leading me to my opportunity. We sat down in the wooden pews, then I was handed my order of service, including the piece that I would be reading.

The first carol went in a flash. It was my turn … I stood up and nervously walked to the lectern. I read aloud! I was so proud. After, I walked humbly back to my pew and sang the rest of the carols and listened to other readings. Immediately after the service, we went to the hall for refreshments before getting the coach back to school. We arrived back in time for lunch and I ate some warming food.” Adam Beat – Year 7

“When we were getting ready to go to the Haileybury Carol Service, my heart was beating so fast it was almost like it was cheering. Excitedly, we got into lines and started to walk happily. As we all got in the bus, our legs were shaking with excitement.

Eventually, we arrived and saw the amazing buildings, the height of office blocks and a huge dome, the shape of a sphere with wide, stained-glass windows that reflected the bright, beautiful sun into our amazed faces. It was fantastic!

As we moved closer, we could see inside the Chapel. It had phenomenal paintings that towered over us with iridescent patterns that you could see everywhere! I felt amazed looking at this because if was so perfectly decorated.

We sat down after gazing at the Chapel and started to sing our carols. After we sang one of them, we looked behind us to see an impressive organ. It had many different pipes that were as long as a giraffe’s neck: it was huge! Once we had finished our first carol, we all sat down to listen to people read from the Bible. It was interesting as I learnt new things about Jesus and God. After the readings, we sang two more carols and then the service was over. I was sad to leave as I had seen and learnt many new things. As we drove away, it was almost like the chapel was trying to tell us to come back, but we drove off and went back to school in time for lunch.” James Hajdu – Year 7
