Comprehensive Ayurvedic Lifestyle and Nutrition Course

We are excited to announce that we have significantly changed the Diploma in Ayurvedic Lifestyle and Nutrition for 2020. The course now offers the equivalent teaching of a full-time course. The enormous increase in the amount of teaching and practicum will significantly enhance students’ experience of learning Ayurveda and offers more support for our new practitioners to set up in practice than any other training provider of this kind. Previously the course contained over 600 hours of teaching, training clinics, case stud-ies, tutorials, Q&A sessions via live-stream, advisory facility and forum via social media. We are now adding a further 80-100 additional hours of teaching in video format to the curriculum.

The new structure ensures that we are able to offer even more student assistance with case studies, shad-ow consultations, training clinics and support for students in practice and much more. The newest major additions this year, which we have added after consultation with our students are:

Formative assessments: analysis of consultations by watching real consultations led by Ayurvedic physicians Ayurvedic pharmacology expert sessions: to teach and answer student questions on prescribing supplements Instruction and materials on essential recipes for Ayurvedic remedies

Case study sessions involving presentation of student’s case studies and analysis and feedback Additional medicine classes Practical classes on the preparation of Ayurvedic remedies & identification of herbs and plants Regular group calls with doctors and practitioners to answer ongoing questions Practice development sessions designed to help practitioners get themselves set up and start practice

The newest major additions this year, which we have added after consultation with our students are:

The Diploma in Ayurvedic Lifestyle and Nutrition for 2020 will begin in September 2020.

Who is this course designed for?

This course is designed for anyone who wants to learn Ayurveda from an in-depth and practical perspective. It is ideal for those who want a career change, to earn a qualification as an Ayurvedic Consultant and become part of a growing indus-try in alternative healing modalities.

It is ideal for those who want to know how to keep themselves, families and friends balanced, healthy and full of natural vital-ity. The course would also benefit medical doctors, alternative health practitioners, yoga teachers, alternative therapists and those currently working as Ayurvedic practitioners who want a deeper understanding of the science.

It is tailor made for those who wish to practice Ayurvedic medicine in the West and is uniquely structured so that students can begin to treat clients in the last quarter of the course and earn while they continue to learn in further studies. It is the first part of a trilogy of diploma courses, each building on the learning from the last to deepen students’ understanding of the science and the art of its practice. Students can expect to begin practice after the first year, whilst continuing to learn in the following years.

Our experience is that these teachings are life-changing. Every student who commits to this study emerges from the course without having experienced deep personal transformation at every level of their lives.

Ayurveda and its practice in the West is a pioneering endeavour. Everything we do is stepping into new territory and is shaping the future of Ayurveda. What that means is that the opportunity to create new ways of earning a living using the secrets of an ancient science are vast.

What is included in the course?

The Diploma in Ayurvedic Lifestyle and Nutrition for 2020 will begin in September 2020. The new structure involves 6 immersions of duration between 2-5 days over the course of the year. The main immersions will be spread over 5 days (Saturday to Wednesday). For those who have any difficulty in attending sessions during the week, they will be live-streamed and recorded to watch when possible. In addition, students will now be sent video teaching prior to the immersions to prepare for them. The new structure allows us to give so much more practical, vocational and individual training to our students. Our course now offers hundreds of hours of teaching which compares to a full-time course, whilst reducing the independent study hours for the student.

Our courses are designed to be as flexible as possible. Students can tailor the course to fit in with busy lifestyles and childcare commitments using a combination of

Our online course is unlike any other. Our students watching the course even as far away as Australia say that because they can communicate with the class and the lecturer whilst the lecture is going on it feels like “being in the classroom”. Students feel a part of what is going on and if they choose can be in communication and shar-ing with each other and Ayurvedic practitioners from our staff continuously during the lecture.

Students can take the course online entirely if they wish from abroad and within the UK. We have students from 5 continents learning with us, as far afield as Canada, Aus-tralia, South America … See our e-Learning tab to access the full list of countries.

We require minimum attendance in ‘real-time’ (i.e. in person or via live-stream) of 70% of the immersions plus the examination. Students can attend in real time in person or by connecting via live stream on their laptop or any device.

This facility allows students to participate from home as if they were in the classroom. Students can see and hear the lectures in real time and can ask questions of the lec-turer in real time using live chat.

All lectures are recorded and made available to students for the whole year, so stu-dents can catch up on missed lectures or recap at their leisure.

What will I be qualified to treat?

Consultants will be able to advise on wellbeing and treat a range of health issues including weight loss, skin disorders, digestive disorders, women’s disorders, allergies and food intolerances and other common ailments. Consultants will be able to identify the predominant dosha and imbalances in the body causing the disorder. So many of these disorders can be eliminated entirely or significantly alleviated us-ing Ayurvedic dietary and lifestyle knowledge. Given the amount of practicum this course offers, students will be well equipped to begin consultations with patients even before qualifying.

Dr Deepika can offer Consultants her proprietary range of Ayurvedic herb-al supplements, oils, elixirs and jams, designed specifically for practitioners at this level (formulated herbal medicine can only be prescribed by Ayurvedic physicians and advanced practitioners who have completed a minimum level-2 or level-3 di-ploma Ayurvedic Practitioner Course). Dr Deepika’s herbal supplements are carefully sourced from Sri Lanka. As in her own practice, she ensures that all herbal remedies prescribed are of the highest quality, purity and potency.

Important note: The ability to treat disorders at certain levels of acuity de-pends on the knowledge and experience of the practitioner. Consultants at this level cannot treat serious conditions nor prescribe formulated Ayurvedic medicines.

Consultants are able to treat clients who are experiencing acute or chronic disorders at the primary stage as well as alleviating some of the discomfort asso-ciated with chronic disorders using dietary and lifestyle advice and over the counter Ayurvedic health food supplements. Save in the case of chronic disorders which have developed beyond the preliminary stage, practice at this level of training means the ability to alleviate discomfort and symptoms, advise on long-term prevention and eliminate the causes of the disorder.

Student testimonials

To study with Dr Deepika is to receive authentic Ayurvedic training from a gifted doctor and teacher. Dr Deepika imparts her wisdom with warmth, humour, patience

and generosity, making learning with her a truly enriching experience.

Jill Cartwright

Dr Deepika’s passion for Ayurveda is contagious. Her humanistic and humorous approach to treating, teaching and helping others is refreshingly unique and inspiring. I can honestly say that she has been a significant influence in turning my life around. Her profound experience and understanding of the philosophy, the science, and the application of Ayurveda to everyday life is shared with great enthusiasm and an adapt-ability to the individual. As a student, I felt that I was learning what’s applicable in a western society, without compromising the authenticity or beauty of its tradition. The

classes were incredibly interactive and informative. Thank you Dr Deepika

Laura Hancock

TI’ve enjoyed the ALNC course immensely and have found the teachings of Dr Deepika to be very practical in their content, whilst being more relevant than ever for today’s modern world. Dr Deepika has a wonderful way of making these time-honored principles completely accessible to everyone. I’ve especially valued her extensive expe-rience gained from almost 20 years of working with patients in private practice, which she shares in everything she teaches. The breadth and detail of the course syllabus, along with Dr Deepika’s passion, enthusiasm and humility for Ayurveda were all major factors in my decision to embark on this course. I would (and have!) recommend it to

anyone.”

Claire Sparks (Australia)

I had a very intensive and life changing experience from attending the course with Dr. Deepika. I clung to her every word. Her knowledge and wisdom made me feel lucky to be there in the class and I tried to absorb as much as I could from all those awe-some lectures. She really looked after us in a very kindly and friendly way and made all of us at ease. So I would thank Dr. Deepika and recommend her as a teacher and as a

Doctor.

Two words describe what the course is for me, ‘Spiritual Nourishment’. This must be said to all the students, that Dr. Deepika did not choose Ayurveda, Ayurveda choose Dr. Deepika. Therefore we are learning from one of the best. I have never know anyone to have such passion and compassion about all who come her way, patients, students, friends, and family, she really cares about us all.The understanding of Ayurveda flows out of her. We, her students and patients are so fortunate that Dr. Deepika came to the West to pass on this rich and centuries old in-formation to us, even as far as Canada in my little town of 5,000 people, that is really something. The more knowledge I gain on this subject, the more I realize how little I know about this vast subject. I began to realise the importance of being true to one self and to keeping the knowledge of Ayurveda that is being passed down to us through Dr. Deep-ika as pure, and true as it has been passed down centuries ago. We practice Ayurveda for the good of all living beings and things.I would like to thank Dr. Deepika, Geoff, Ajanta and Sachi for all their hard work in making this course happen, and to reach people like myself who live in a small remote area, in the forest of Cananda possible, and to be part of this life changing experience,

and help me on my spiritual journey. Thank you all.

Corinne Hapak

She has a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise. She teaches in a style which is fun, memorable, visual and hands-on. I absolutely loved being her student. I have found new Ayurvedic knowledge to take me forward in life. This process has en-hanced me as a person and has given me a greater understanding of people. I enjoyed

every moment thoroughly. It has been a pleasure. Thank you.

L.C.

Ayurveda is a familiar practice in Sri Lanka where my teacher Dr Deepika comes from. It is clear she has an extensive knowledge of the subject. The course opened up for me a broader picture of what Ayurveda or Life Science is. The knowledge I have taken away certainly helps me have a greater understanding of myself and other peo-ple. I would highly recommend Dr Deepika’s courses whether its an area of personal interest or you’re looking to become a professional practitioner. I don’t know anywhere

else in the world that offers such a relaxed and professional course..

David Packard

Dr Deepika’s passion for Ayurveda and her profound understanding of this ancient science developed over many years, truly bring her teaching to life. Her lectures are peppered with real life anecdotes which never failed to amaze me. Her perspective on the world through the philosophy of Ayurveda is mind altering. All delivered with great humour and a light touch. She is a warm and compassionate teacher and doctor. Her teaching is as much an energetic transmission of understanding as it is traditional

learning. I will always be grateful to her for the precious understanding I now have.

Do I have to attend all lectures in person?

Our courses are designed to be as flexible as possible. Students can tailor the course to fit in with busy lifestyles and childcare commitments using a combination of attendance in-person, live-stream facility and recorded lectures.

We require minimum attendance in ‘real-time’ (i.e. in person or via live-stream) of 70% of the immersions plus the examination. Students can attend in real time in person or by connecting via live stream on their laptop. This facility allows students to participate from home as if they were in the classroom. Students can see and hear the lectures in real time and can ask questions of the lecturer in real time using live chat.

All lectures are recorded and made available to students for the whole year, so students can catch up on missed lectures or recap at their leisure.

Real-time attendance whether in person or via live-stream is highly recommended. Students who have any particular difficulties with attendance in ‘real-time’ can notify us as we aim to make this teaching as accessible as possible, especially for those with non-negotiable commitments.

All students attending the immersions whether in person or online are required to sign in on the online register for each immersion before the start of each immersion to let us know if they will be attending in person, via live-stream or absent and watching the recorded lectures.

Students are only required to attend the core immersions in real-time (which in-cludes training clinics) and undertake the core components of the course in their own time. The optional components will also be live-streamed and recorded. These components are not required to receive the diploma, although highly recommended depending on the student’s available time.

The immersions are the most direct transmission of the understanding of Ayurveda and act as an experiential platform for you to embody the material. Each immersion includes intensive learning experiences that allow the student to excavate, discover and integrate who they are and what they can bring to the practice of Ayurveda.

What learning support is available to students? At the Ayurveda Institute we aim to offer students unparalleled learning support to have them practice whilst learning. The vocational training we provide is critically focused on real-life practice and using real patients from our own clinic as well as providing individualised feedback from our doctors. No other course provider puts so many resources into the vocational training of their students in-house.

How much home study am I required to do ?Depending on the student’s prior medical knowledge, students are required to undertake the minimum 5-hours home study per week or 20-hours per month in addition to the immersion tutorial hours in order to complete the core components of the course which are sufficient to complete the diploma and practice. The home study hours will include watching e-learning videos, completing formative assessments online, case studies and practice consultations with friends and family. The optional components of the course can make up to 600 hours of teaching, practicals, Q&A sessions, online advice and home study.

Q&A sessions in final trimester with our experienced Ayurvedic physicians. These sessions are for further discussion, revision and analysis of students’ case studies with their own clients.

Training clinics offer the greatest practical learning available. Students will conduct approximately 15 supervised consultations with real patients who have been treated at the Ayurvedic Clinic. The consultations are conducted in small groups of 2 or 3 students and the doctors provide feedback on performance and a round-up of the day’s findings. Our students find that this exponentially increases their consultation skills as well as their knowledge. It is being in practice while learning.

Case studies. Students conduct consultations with friends and family in the final trimester of the year giving nutrition and lifestyle advice and advising on home remedies from the Repository of Ayurvedic Home Remedies provided for students. Advice and feedback to support their internship practices is available from our Ayurvedic doctors. Our students have already witnessed enormous transformations and healing before they even qualify. They find that this exponentially increases their consultation skills as well as their knowledge. It is being in practice while learning.

Shadow consultations allow students to observe real consultations led by highly experienced Ayurvedic doctors which are then analysed and discussed. This both gives students an invaluable insight into how to conduct consultations, practical tools and deepens their knowledge of treatment of disorders. Our students find this to be an enlightening aspect of the learning to help them practice.

We use a live-stream facility to broadcast the immersions. For tele-classes we use an advanced teleconferencing system which allows a large number of students to call in at the same time and participate in a chaired discussion, exercises using case studies, and question and answer sessions.

We also maintain an online student community and hub for students to meet and discuss topics. We post questions and review discussions so that the lecturers can address areas students wish to focus more attention on.

Online advisory service. Facebook closed group learning support for students to gain advice from our Ayurvedic physicians on their case studies on a case-by-case basis, and discuss case studies and topics.

Repository of Ayurvedic Herbal Home Remedies. A database of home remedies which can be used even before qualifiying

Sanskrit classes

In order to deepen the understanding of Ayurveda, Sanskrit is decoded. Sloka or Sanskrit verse is the way in which Ayurveda was first codified thousands of years ago and the principles remain intact and applicable today. We teach and practice Ayurveda staying always faithful to these original principles. These sloka and other Ayurvedic terms will be decoded to unveil deeper meaning.

Sanskrit is taught by Gabriella Burnel (BA Hons in Sanskrit, Oxon) and has been teaching Sanskrit for many years. Gabriella began learning Sanskrit and Pali at the age of four and teaches, chants and sings it as it is in her blood. Gabriella feels particularly strongly about the beauty in the sounding of the Sanskrit language and the purity of the alphabet.

For her introductory video please visit our Videos tab or our Facebook page. For more information, please see below.

"I enjoy the challenge of teaching Sanskrit to beginners and showing that it is a simple, natural, musical and beautiful language. Having studied Sanskrit since the age of 4, I have found it has helped me focus, shown me the joy of sound, and opened up a whole new world waiting to be discovered, for every time you study it, you realize how much more there is to learn. There are numerous Sanskrit sto-ries, tales of heroes and battles, of love and romance that all children love and can get enthused by. Also, the Sanskrit chants are one of the unfailing keys to the power of the language. Well taught, the simple sounding brings inner peace and harmony, without any extra effort or knowledge."Gabriella Burnel

What written course materials are provided?

Course materials and teaching videos to watch in preparation for the immersions are made available in advance through the student portal on our website. The written materials are a comprehensive set of tailor made course notes to support the immersions. In addition, after watching e-learning videos, students are required to complete formative assessments to ensure they have understood the materials.

The written materials include the Course Note and PowerPoint presentations to support learning. Our students find it helpful to print copies of the PowerPoint presentations for their study with the videos and immersions to make notes. As we aim to protect the environment, we provide all Institute teaching materials electronically and advocate the printing of only necessary materials.

What reference materials are used?

The Ayurveda Institute commissions the printing of the reference books and ships them from India for our students. These are the practitioner’s bibles and are to be kept for life. These are expensive to purchase as they incur heavy shipping costs and are difficult to source. They are covered by the course fees.

Students who are unable to undertake the assessments at the end of the year may defer until the second wave of assessments which takes place approximately 4 or 5 months after the first set of assessments. There is an additional fee payable for this service of £150.00.

The personal programme allows students who don’t wish to be assessed and who undertake this course of study for personal enrichment and development alone to bypass taking the assessments. They are awarded a certificate of completion.

The cost of the course is £4,800.00.

How is the student assessed?

Students are required to submit a number of formative assessments at the end of the year to pass the course. At the conclusion of the course, students will sit for a theory written exam online. This part of the assessment constitutes 60% of the overall mark. This exam can be taken at a pre-arranged time if the student is in another time zone.

For the practical exam, during the last immersion weekend, students conduct a half an hour consultation with a volunteer patient in the clinic in consultation rooms fitted with cameras and microphones so that the doctors are able to observe and assess from another room so that the student is free and uninterrupted. For online students in the UK and Europe, the practical exam takes place via Skype. This part of the assessment constitutes 40% of the overall mark.

Students also submit two completed case studies for assessment one month after the theory and practical exams. Case studies do not form part of the final mark but issue of certificate and results is contingent upon submission of two case studies.
