CONTEMPORARY HOUSES

(3 DIFFERENT EXAMPLES)

Lake Forest Park(Northwest Contemporary house located 25 miles north of Seattle.)

Features

• Atmosphere• Northwest Contemporary house has been completely

renovated while retaining the spirit of the original house. With extensive new windows and glazed roof monitors, the renovated house appears to be a glass pavilion in the forest.

• Furniture• Architectural details throughout the house include

cherry cabinets, stained Douglas fir window trim, original hemlock ceilings and fir beams. Weathered steel covers the staggered wall on the left.

• Lighting• Custom steel lighting bars.• Hand-blown glass light fixtures (TROMS pendants)

• Spatial Organizations• Consistent with the original simplicity and clarity of the

house, a palette of new materials has been added to create powerful juxtapositions of texture and color, allowing each material to benefit from adjacent contrasting surfaces. Casework consists primarily of cherry panels: some panels are smooth while others have been milled with a CNC (computer numeric controlled) router to make a texture evocative of "woven wood." A 30-foot long accent wall adjacent to the dining and kitchen areas has been clad entirely in weathered steel panels. Suspended casework on the steel wall utilizes either resin panels with natural grasses or textured cherry wood, both materials set against the variegated umber colors of the steel.

Beach House

Features• Atmosphere

• A beach house on a unique site with water views on multiple sides; a saltwater bay to the south and the sea to the north and west

• Spatial Organizations• The curved windows of main living

spaces capture the ocean view while family room and bedroom windows face the bay. A lighthouse-like tower, with 360 degree views, forms the focal point of the house and is a beacon for approaching vehicles and passing watercraft.

• Interior-Exterior interactions• The residence features radiant floors, a

ground source heat pump and a rainwater harvesting system that supplies all the domestic water.

West Seatle Resident

Features• Atmosphere

• This West Seattle residence was extensively remodeled. Their Puget Sound view was enhanced by installing new, larger windows. Wood shingle siding was replaced with new metal siding to minimize maintenance requirements and a new warmer natural wood entry was created.

• Interior-Exterior interactions• The interior alterations include a new master

bath, a master bedroom addition, new stairway, remodeled kitchen, dining and living room, mudroom, laundry and powder room. The work in the living room includes adding a gas fireplace with stone surround and concrete hearth and a large sliding door to the deck. The kitchen features new cherry cabinetry, stone countertops and a glass bar. 

Sustainable Houses

Hover House 3 

Features• Architect Dowling Kimm used the

most sustainable materials and energy efficient systems. It is participating in the LEED for Homes program, meaning that this green design has a purpose for the future. In order to maximize the efficiency of the solar panels used, and also to benefit from direct sunlight all throughout the summer months, this home faces south.

• All appliances are Energy Star rated and help lead an eco-friendly life. The exterior of the house is simple, yet beautiful and enchants the viewer with its natural perfect mix of colours. The interior design stays within the same lines: earthly, natural colours, deep beige and pure white naturally contrast with the life-like brown. Fire and warmth surround the idea of comfy, cosy and natural security. A fire place lies in the middle of the living area as a reminder of ages that passed. The art chosen for the All is left is to enjoy the fresh air received as a gift from the forest surrounding this eco-friendly, beautiful home.

Cube House

Features• From German company Studio Aisslinger comes “Fincube”, an

interesting and sustainable architecture project. The house was built at an altitude of 1200 meters near Bozen, Italy. Its design plan implies a low energy consumption with a minimal CO2 footprint.

• Fincube houses an area of 47 sq m, which is similar to the living space of a small apartment. Its interior design is minimal, yet it has everything city life has to offer. The coolest part is that the home can be dismantled and moved to a different site

• Sure, this is not the easiest process, but it can be done. If you are interested in the materials used to build this unusual home, the architects used a combination of larch and stone-pine.

Chuckanut Ridge House

• Achieving homes with a minimal environmental impact seems to be the major architecture trend of the last years. For today, we bring you the Chuckanut Ridge House, a building designed by Prentiss Architects in Washington state. 

• The architects respected the wishes of the clients, a large family with a strong East Asian heritage and culture, to develop a sustainable home: “The goal of minimal environmental impact and off the grid living led to, among other things, photovoltaic panels to provide the electrical power for the house and the collection of rain water as the water source“.

• Many people fear that the addition of solar panels might interact with the architecture design in a negative way. In this particular case, the panels are independent and we consider this to be an original alternative solution. Moreover, the floor to ceiling windows ensure good natural lighting throughout the day and transform some of the rooms (particularly the living and bedroom) into front row seats to the fascinating landscape outdoors.
