INTRODUCTION

Brownsville Elementary School is located in beautiful Albemarle County seventeen miles west of Charlottesville. Brownsville got its name from the Brown family whose history in this area dates back to 1742. Originally settled in Louisa County, the Brown family obtained land grants in Albemarle County soon after the formation of the county. One of the most noted families in the area, the Brown family was prominent in public affairs and was respected for their character and lasting impression they made on the natural scenery of the county.

Our school provides a regular program of instruction for students in pre-kindergarten through grade five. The school opened in September, 1966, with an enrollment of 338. It now has approximately 730 students and may eventually serve 750 students. Mr. Harry Kent served as Brownsville's principal from the school's opening until his retirement in 1985. Mrs. Anne B. Norford served as Brownsville's principal from 1985 to 1995. Mr. John A. Cruickshank was Brownsville's third principal from 1995 to 2003. Ms. Jo Vining was Brownsville’s principal from 2003 until 2010. In July, 2010, Brownsville welcomed Ms. India Haun as our filth principal. Currently Jason Crutchfield took over as principal in May 2016.

Since opening in 1966, Brownsville has been expanded 3 times. The most recent addition was completed in 2010, and provided a new gymnasium and classrooms. The Brownsville Library was renovated during the 2012-2013 school year. Grade levels are logically sequenced into communities of lower elementary (Kindergarten, 1st grade), middle elementary (grades 2-3), and upper elementary (grades 4-5). The three grade level clusters are organized around a central theme of some of the geographic -geophysical regions of Virginia:

• The Coastal Plain / Tidewater ( K/1 )

• The Piedmont ( 2-3 )

• The Mountains / Blue Ridge ( 4-5 )

Colors in the corridors match these regions as well as high quality signage and graphics to designate these areas. Individual classroom signs illustrate plant and animal species found in these specific regions. Our outdoor courtyards are used as learning areas to extend this thematic approach. The Busy Bee Innovation Lounge was established in 2011 and provides students the opportunity to extend their learning in a unique learning space. Brownsville is truly a state of the art school designed to maximize the use of the building as a learning environment. The possibilities are endless to support learning in such a setting!

Brownsville's instructional program includes the skill areas of reading/language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, health and physical education. The school provides creative and cultural activities, technology instruction, art and music. It also provides services in Special Education, Guidance, Speech/Language, English As A Second Language, and Gifted Programs. Students are assigned to heterogeneous homeroom classes, but frequently receive instruction from additional teachers to support all learning styles and needs.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Instructional Programs

All Brownsville students receive instruction in the areas of reading/language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, health, physical education, art, guidance, and music. Teachers follow the instructional goals and objectives of Albemarle County when planning classroom activities in these subjects. Copies of the curriculum guides are available in the school library and on the Albemarle County web page at www.k12albemarle.org for parents to review.

In addition to the core instruction, Brownsville also provides services for identified students in special education including: Adaptive PE, Speech/Language, Physical and Occupational Therapy for identified students. Teachers or parents may refer a student to be considered for these programs. English as Second or other Language (ESOL) services are also provided for identified students.

Brownsville also provides a program for intellectually gifted students. Children in 2nd grade and above are screened and tested for gifted identification during the school year (October, December, and March). Parents/guardians, teachers, and others may nominate a student at any time during the school year. There will be an informational session to learn more about the gifted program early in the school year. The gifted resource teachers also assist classroom teachers in organizing enrichment activities for all students.

Homework Policy

Homework serves as a link between school and home. A strong home‑ school partnership, with many lasting benefits for the individual student and the student’s family, can be greatly enhanced by a sound implementation of homework practices. In addition, homework should be an important tool in developing independent thought, self‑ direction and self‑ discipline. It assists the student in developing good work habits and in the wise use of time. There are four common types of homework assignments:

1. Completion: The student completes work begun in class. 2. Practice: The student practices a skill to improve or increase fluency. 3. Preparation: The student completes a task in order to prepare for an upcoming

lesson. 4. Extension: The student explores or refines learning in new contexts or integrates and

expands classroom learning.

Homework is generally assigned Monday through Thursday. Expectations for the amount of time and effort spent on completing homework will vary at different grade levels. The guidelines below are consistent with the ACPS Homework Policy. If a student is working hard on assignments and exceeds the time listed below, the parent can tell the child it is time to stop and send a note of explanation to the teacher. Kindergarten and First Grade 10 minutes

Second Grade 20 minutes

Third Grade 30 minutes

Fourth Grade 40 minutes

Fifth Grade 50 minutes

Parents can be most helpful by establishing a special study time, a quiet place, and lots of encouragement. In grades 3-5, students are expected to use student agendas/planners to help keep up with their assignments. The agendas also serve as a communication tool between home and school. Teachers who share students will coordinate assignments to avoid giving any child excessive work to complete at home on any one night. Classroom teachers may have specific guidelines for homework. These are communicated to parents at the beginning of the year and through class newsletters.

Library/Media Center

Our school has a well-equipped library managed by a full-time librarian/media specialist. The library offers a variety of resources for teachers, students, and parents. The librarian, in addition to providing instruction for students in the use of the library and study skills, works very closely with teachers in planning special activities and in providing materials to enhance instruction. Students go to the library at least once a week for 30 minutes. Students are responsible for library books they check out. If a student loses or damages a book, beyond normal wear and tear, he or she is responsible for the cost of replacing the book. Every year Brownsville holds a week long Book Fair to benefit the school library. You will receive further information regarding this event through school mailings.

Acceptable Use of Technology

Students frequently use technology as instructional tools throughout the school. Responsible use is an expectation for all members of the Brownsville learning community. Students and their parents/guardians are required to sign a copy of the School Board’s regulations for the appropriate use of technology.

Report Cards and Parent Portal

Through the Parent Portal online site, report cards are shared with families at the end of each nine weeks. Access to Parent Portal password must be picked up at school in person, with a valid identification. Parent-teacher conferences and interim reports are also used to communicate information about student progress. Families are encouraged to contact their student’s teacher if there are any questions.

Standardized Tests

The Commonwealth of Virginia requires that standardized tests be given to students. Students in lower grades participate in PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening) to screen, diagnose and to monitor fundamental components of literacy. Standards of Learning (SOL) tests are given to third, fourth and fifth graders in May to assess what students know and are able to do in Language Arts-Grades 3-5, Math-Grades 3-5, Science and Social Studies - Grade 5. The Cognitive Ability Test (CogAT) is given to all second grade students in Albemarle County. Parents will receive the results from these tests with a written explanation of how they should be interpreted.

Student's Scholastic Record (Student Files)

Parents are permitted to review, with the school principal or designee, records maintained on their children. Virginia Department of Education Regulations officially mandates that parents and eligible students be informed in writing of the School Board's policy with respect to the management of student records.

Student scholastic records are written and maintained to assist the student in his/her personal, social, educational and vocational development consistent with high professional standards. These records are kept under the supervision of the principal or designee. The records are used to assist the school staff in working with the student. The principal or designee is responsible for reviewing the records to make sure information no longer needed is removed.

No other person, other than the parent or eligible student and officials legally designated, has the right to information in the record unless the parent or eligible student gives written permission, or if the information is subpoenaed by a court or requested by officers of the court. Upon challenge of record content by the parent or eligible student, the established procedures for students and parent shall be followed. The cost of reproducing any portion of the record will be borne by the eligible person who desires such reproduction.

Responsive Classroom

The Responsive Classroom approach to teaching emphasizes academic, social, and emotional growth in a strong school community. We believe that how children learn is as important as what they learn, and that academic success is inextricably tied to building social-emotional competencies. Brownsville teachers and staff:

• Design lessons that are active and interactive • Use effective teacher language to promote academic and social growth • Encourage engagement by giving students meaningful choices • Start each day in a way that sets a positive tone for learning • Set high expectations and teach students how to meet them • Establish routines that promote autonomy and independence • Build a sense of community and shared purpose • Teach students 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication,

collaboration, creativity, and innovation

Responsive Classroom practices used by many teachers include:

Interactive Modeling—An explicit practice for teaching procedures and routines (such as those for entering and exiting the room) as well as academic and social skills (such as engaging with the text or giving and accepting feedback).

Teacher Language—The intentional use of language to enable students to engage in their learning and develop the academic, social, and emotional skills they need to be successful in and out of school.

Logical Consequences—A non-punitive response to misbehavior that allows teachers to set clear limits and students to fix and learn from their mistakes while maintaining their dignity.

Morning Meeting—Everyone in the classroom gathers in a circle for twenty to thirty minutes at the beginning of each school day and proceeds through four sequential components: greeting, sharing, group activity, and morning message.

Establishing Rules—Teacher and students work together to name individual goals for the year and establish rules that will help everyone reach those goals.

Energizers—Short, playful, whole-group activities that are used as breaks in lessons.

Quiet Time—A brief, purposeful and relaxed time of transition that takes place after lunch and recess, before the rest of the school day continues.

Closing Circle—A five- to ten-minute gathering at the end of the day that promotes reflection and celebration through participation in a brief activity or two.

After School Program (BASE - Brownsville After School Enrichment) 2:25 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Brownsville After School Enrichment Program provides quality childcare and planned activities daily. This program is a prepaid program and registration must be completed at the Extended Day Enrichment Program Office located at 907 Henry Avenue in Charlottesville. SCHOOL POLICIES

Visiting the School

All visitors must enter Brownsville School through the front entrance and sign in at the school office during regular instructional hours (7:45 A.M. - 2:25 P.M.). Volunteers and visitors should report to the front office and log into the computer in the waiting area. After logging into the system, an identification tag will be printed. This tag should be displayed at all times while in the school. Upon

Page 14: Student-Parent Handbook 2017-2018 handbook 2017-18.pdfBROWNSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - 2 - INTRODU TION Brownsville Elementary School is located in beautiful Albemarle County seventeen

- 14 -

completion of services or visit, volunteers and visitors should report back to the office to check out of the system.

These routine security measures have been adopted to help ensure that Brownsville is a safe school.

School Hours

Regular school hours are 7:45 A.M. to 2:25 P.M. The school office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The secretaries are available to help visitors when they come to the office.

Tardiness/Check-out: Students who arrive after the 7:55 A.M. bell are tardy and must report to the office and sign in. If you need to pick up your child at school before 2:25 P.M., send a note to your child’s teacher stating the time you will be picking up your child. Students must be signed out in the office. A staff member will assist you in signing out your child and will have the student sent to the office to meet you. Please make every effort to have your student in school for the full day. Students miss important instructional time when regularly withdrawn from class before the end of the day.

Parents who pick up their children at dismissal time may meet their children in the cafeteria area or wait for them at the student drop-off area near the gym. Please do not leave your car parked in the turn-around section.

Please inform your child's teacher, by a note, if your child is to be excused from school by anyone other than a parent or guardian. The school office should be notified by 1:30 P.M. if there will be any change in a child’s dismissal plan.

Student Attendance Policy

It is important for students to arrive at school before morning announcements begin at 7:55 A.M. Children who arrive after the 7:55 A.M. bell will be marked tardy. School Board Policy JED states: "School attendance is directly related to academic achievement and the development of good habits which are important in the world of work. Optimum student attendance is a cooperative effort and the school board expects parents and students to take an active role in accepting the responsibility for good attendance. The principal has the discretion to deny credit or promotion to a student who misses more than sixteen days during the school year." (School Board Policy JED) When a child is absent, a parent or guardian should contact the school between 7:30 and 8:30 A.M. either by phone (434-823-4658) or email ([email protected]). If the school is not contacted, we will attempt to reach a parent or guardian by telephone to confirm a child's absence. When a child returns to school after being absent, he/she should bring a written excuse. Families are asked to plan family vacations during regularly scheduled school holidays.

School Arrival and Dismissal (Buses & Cars) Prompt arrival to school is vital to your child’s academic success. Within the first 20 minutes of the day, teachers set a positive tone with classroom community building activities or providing student support to prepare for the day. Our first bell rings at 7:45 A.M. and the final bell when students should be in their homerooms at 7:55 A.M.

Buses - Students are unloaded from the buses and enter the school building at 7:45. The buses leave the school at approximately 2:35 P.M. each day.

Student Drop off – Patience and Safety is the highest priority. We ask for your patience when dropping off or picking up students. In order to have safe supervision, students who are driven to school in the mornings should not arrive before 7:38 A.M. for car drop offs and 7:45 A.M. for walk-ins. For the safety of all, please drop off or pick up students who are driven to and from school at the door on the south end of the school at the gym. There are eight numbered spots. Pull all the way up to the next open spot. We ask that students exit vehicles on the curbside. If they do exit on the road side, they are to walk to the curb in front of their driver’s car. In fostering independence, please allow students to open and close vehicle doors on their own. For children’s safety, all drivers are asked not to pass other vehicles at any time, unless directed by a staff member.

Students should not be dropped off in the parking lot and allowed to walk into the school without a parent accompanying them. If you need to come into the building with your child, please park your car in a designated parking space and cross only at crosswalks.

Student Pick Up – Vehicles should line up at the south end of the build by the gym. Staff members will assist in locating and loading students. The same safety precautions as student drop off (above) are in place.

If you prefer to pick up your child inside the building, please meet your child in the cafeteria breezeway area.

PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THE BUS LANES IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL BETWEEN 7:30 AND 8:10 IN THE MORNING AND BETWEEN 1:30 AND 2:35 IN THE AFTERNOON. Passing buses that are loading or unloading students is a traffic violation.

Bus Notes and Changes of Dismissal Plans

When a child is to ride a different bus, a note is required that should include the child's name, date, destination, and bus number that the student will be riding. This note will be given to the teacher and brought to the school office for signature.

It is important for parents to send a note whenever there is a change in dismissal plans . The school office should be notified by 1:30 P.M. of any last minute changes in dismissal plans. Brownsville wants every child to get to his/her proper destination safely.

Bus Behavior

All children should remain seated, keep hands and feet to themselves, and talk in quiet voices on the bus at all times. While on the bus, the bus driver is in charge. All students need to listen and to follow the bus driver's directions at all times. Children who choose not to follow the rules of their bus will be reported to the Administrators. Students who continue to cause disruptions on the bus may lose the privilege of riding the bus. Students are encouraged to report problems to the bus driver immediately to ensure safety.

Field Trips

School field trips are planned by teachers during the school year to extend learning opportunities in the regular program. These are intended to be both enjoyable and instructional. Students are often asked to bring money to cover expenses. School buses are used for short trips and private buses are taken when classes travel long distances. Guidelines for Brownsville field trips include:

➢ No students will be denied participation on a field trip because of expense.

➢ Students are expected to ride the bus on field trips.

➢ Parents attending field trips will be asked to serve as chaperones and stay with the group.

➢ Parent chaperones might be able to ride the bus if there is space available.

➢ Preschool siblings are not permitted to ride on buses.

➢ Students are expected to follow school rules on all trips.

Dressing for School

• It is recommended that students wear athletic shoes (sneakers) for P.E. class.

• Dress or appearance must not present health or safety problems or cause disruption.

• Clothing should not have disruptive or unsafe pictures or wording.

• No hats will be worn inside the building. This is so we can identify students.

• Wear clothing appropriate for the weather because they are frequently outside for recess or P.E.

• We encourage all students to wear athletic shoes or closed toed shoes all day.

Emergency / Registration Forms

The first day of school your child will receive an information packet that includes a registration form. These forms should be completed and returned by the end of the first week of school. Please make sure these forms are kept up-to-date throughout the year. The information on these forms is often our only link to you in case an emergency situation arises during the day.

Emergency School Closing or Late Opening

When schools are to be closed or opened late, an announcement will be made over the local radio and TV stations. IF NO ANNOUNCEMENT OF CLOSING OR LATE OPENING IS MADE, SCHOOLS WILL OPERATE ON REGULAR SCHEDULES.

It is sometimes necessary to close school during the school day. When this happens, an announcement is made over the radio (AM: 1070-WINA; 1260-WCHV and FM: 95-WQMZ; 97.5-3WV; 102-WJLT) and T.V. (Channels 29, 19, and 16). It is very important that your child knows what procedure to follow on such occasions. Parents are asked to complete an Emergency Closing form at the beginning of the school year, which clearly states where their child is to go in the event of an early closing.

PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL OFFICE WHEN THERE IS A CLOSING OR POSSIBILITY OF A CLOSING! We need the lines to be kept open for emergencies. Albemarle County Schools has established a telephone service for parents to obtain information regarding school closing. The number to call is 296-5886.

Albemarle County Public Schools has an Electronic School Notification System. This system is an essential tool for communication with parents. Within minutes of a school Division-wide emergency, school officials can use ESNS to deliver a message to parents, guardians, or designated emergency contacts by landline or cellular phone, and e-mail. ESNS also may be used to inform parents of weather related school schedule changes or closing, or regular school activities such as Back-to-School Nights.

Emergency Closing Forms

Every student will receive an emergency closing form in the fall. Parents should complete a form for each child. These forms will be kept on file with the child's teacher. The plan you indicate on your Emergency Closing form will be followed if schools should close early.

Food

Breakfast A Breakfast Program is offered every morning to all children. Children who qualify for free or reduced lunch also qualify for free or reduced breakfast. Students who would like to purchase breakfast may do so for $1.40. Reduced cost of breakfast is $.30. Students are not allowed to bring food from home for breakfast.

Lunch Lunch can be purchased daily, weekly, or monthly from the cafeteria. The price of a student lunch is $2.50. Income eligible students are encouraged to apply for free meals or reduced price meals at $0.40. Parents, grandparents, and supervised younger siblings are welcome to eat lunch in the cafeteria. Adult breakfast can be purchased for $1.70 and an adult lunch at $3.35. Sodas are not to be consumed in the cafeteria during lunch.

Lunch Money Every student in Albemarle County is assigned a personal identification number (PIN). This number will follow the student all the way through high school. Families may send money in to be applied to their student’s account. Each day the student buys lunch he/she will enter his/her PIN on the keypad in the cafeteria. The day’s lunch cost will be deducted from the student’s account. If it is preferable to send lunch money with your student on a daily basis, that is acceptable. Students will need to enter their PINs if they are buying lunch or milk only.

Healthy Snacks Students are encouraged to bring a healthy snack each morning. (This is particularly important for students who eat during the 2nd or 3rd lunch periods.) Examples of healthy snacks are vegetables, fruit, popcorn, rice cakes, cheese and crackers, sandwiches, pretzels, and yogurt. Please do not send snacks that contain any peanut products. We ask families to help make this a healthy experience for the students. Milk may be purchased for $.55.

Ice Cream Ice Cream will be available for sale during lunch periods after Labor Day. Ice Cream will be sold on Fridays. The cost is $.75.

Health Issues

Sick Children If your child has an elevated temperature and/ or has been vomiting, he/she should be kept at home. If a student becomes ill at school, the parents will be notified and asked to pick up their child as quickly as possible.

Immunizations Virginia law requires that upon enrollment, proof of completion of immunization or proof of being "in process" of receiving required immunizations must be provided to the school.

Lice Anyone can get head lice. Students may be checked for head lice in school when there are suspected cases. If a child is found to have head lice, we will notify the families immediately and ask that the child be picked up from school. The child will be readmitted after complete treatment for the problem. We will inform parents by letter if lice are present in a classroom.

Vision Screening Children in kindergarten and third grade will have their vision checked early in the year. Families are notified of any concerns. Children in other grade levels can also be referred for vision checks.

Medications Albemarle County School personnel may only give prescription/non-prescription medication to children with written request from the parent or guardian. This request needs to include: the child's name, name of medication, dosage, and the time it is to be given. (A copy of the request form is included in the back of this handbook.) All medication must be kept in the clinic and administered by the health clinician or office personnel. We encourage parents to give medication at home as much as possible. Students are not permitted to carry prescription or non-prescription medications at school.

If your child is allergic to certain foods, dust, pollen, or bee stings, etc., the office and the child's teacher should be informed immediately. It is essential for the school office to be provided with special written instructions, medication for your child and an emergency contact person.

Please inform the school if your child has any medical conditions requiring special procedures or considerations.

The School Board Policy on medications is in the back of this handbook.

Lost and Found

A Lost and Found area is provided. Parents are asked to write their child's name in or on all coats, sweaters and on school supplies. At the end of each quarter, unclaimed items will be donated to charity.

Party Invitations and Gifts

Brownsville School requests that invitations to private parties not be distributed at school. We also ask that balloons, flowers, and other large items not be sent to the school for students. These items are very difficult to transport home in the afternoons. If families bring birthday treats to share with the class, they are asked to coordinate with the teacher for times and health/allergy issues.

Recess

Weather-permitting, teachers take their students outside for recess during the school day. Recess gives students a short break from schoolwork and an opportunity to socialize, release energy, and get some fresh air and sunlight. Students are expected to follow the playground safety rules when they are outside for recess. Staff members carefully supervise the students to ensure that these rules are followed.

Students who participate in outdoor recess must wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather conditions. When it is 40 degrees or colder, skin must be covered. Students will be given the option to remain inside when the temperature is below 32 degrees.

School Directory In order for your family’s information (name of student, name of parent/guardian, address, telephone listing, email address) to be made public and appear in the Brownsville Directory, you must logon to the Brownsville PTO website (www.brownsvillepto.org) and enter your information. If you do not have access to the Internet, you may submit, in writing, to the front office no later than September 9, 2016, the information you would like to include. Returning families must update their child’s grade and teacher.

Student Achievement

At Brownsville we want to establish a community of learners and learning. We want all of our students to embrace learning, to excel, and to own their futures. We will accomplish this through rigor, relevance, and relationships, one student at a time.

Our students will be recognized during the school year for good behavior, good citizenship, excellent attendance, and completion of all academic assignments.

Discipline Policy

The purpose of the Brownsville discipline policy is to guide children to develop the social skills of cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy and self-control. We strive to support positive student behavior and productive learning. Teachers use Responsive Classroom practices to promote a safe and positive learning environment. Teachers manage and solve most discipline problems in class. When a child repeatedly fails to follow the school rules, the teacher will inform families and the administrators. When there is a serious violation of school rules, the teacher completes a discipline referral form. The student is then required to meet with an administrator and develop a plan of action for improving behavior before returning to class. During this meeting, students who are unable to demonstrate the self-control necessary to return to class will be given time in the office to do so. If a student is not ready to return to class after a reasonable amount of time, a parent or guardian will be required to come to school to meet with an administrator.

The parents/guardian(s) will be contacted by telephone and a copy of the referral may be sent home with the student. A copy of formal discipline referrals (including Bus Conduct Reports) becomes a part of the student's permanent record, as required by Virginia State law Parents should be aware that School Board Policies strictly prohibit the possession of any type of weapon on school property. Any student found to have a weapon will be suspended from school and the case will be reviewed by the superintendent of schools.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Home-School Communications

Teachers, families, and students must all work together to ensure a successful learning experience for each child. It is important that teachers and families communicate regularly about individual student progress and learning activities. We recommend that families meet with their child's teacher early in the year.

The school communicates with families in a variety of ways, such as, school newsletters, "The Beeline", fliers, "Brownsville Buzzings", class newsletters, report cards or narrative reports, conferences, and this handbook. Copies of newsletters are posted on the Brownsville website. The school calendar of events, as well as up to date school and County-wide news, links to other information such as lunch menus, is also available on Brownsville’s website at www.k12albemarle.org/brownsville. Brownsville PTO also has an email distribution list. You may subscribe to this list at http://brownsvillepto.us7.list-manage1.com/subscribe?u=68c76c79307c5693c1f95ff0a&id=ca58ce1f3e In addition, teachers may telephone, write a note, email, send progress reports, send a class newsletter, or come to your home in order to communicate better. Teachers will respond to messages within 48 hours. All students bring home a "Monday Packet" which includes completed class work and other information. Families are encouraged to take an active interest in their child's instructional program. You are welcome to visit or volunteer in classes, or join your child for lunch in the cafeteria. If you would like to observe classroom instruction, please make arrangements in advance with the teacher. If you have any concerns or need information, please contact your child's teacher or the principal as soon as possible. We welcome your ideas, participation, questions, concerns, and positive comments, too. As the county continues the initiative to go paperless, the table below includes the ways the school will communicate. Brownsville joins the division’s elementary schools in using Parent Portal for parents to view class placements, attendance, meal account balance, news bulletins and quarterly report cards. In addition, other digital communication tools will provide access to school news and information. Use the chart below as a guide to your access.

PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization)

Brownsville is fortunate to have a very dedicated, capable, and involved group of parents and teachers who together make up the PTO. The PTO organizes a wide variety of events and activities throughout the year in order to enrich our children’s educational experiences, to build a sense of community, and to support our school. Look for meeting notices in the “Beemail”. Childcare is provided. All parents and teachers are encouraged to join and become active participants. For more information about the Brownsville PTO and their programs and meetings, please check out their website at www.brownsvillepto.org.

School Board Meetings

School Board meetings are open to the public and interested citizens are invited to attend. The Board meets at 6:30 p.m. in Room 241 of the County Office Building. An opportunity for the public to speak on issues of concern is provided at each Thursday meeting. Information concerning the agenda may be obtained from the Clerk of the Board at 972-4055. You may also view school board information on line at http://www.k12albemarle.org/Board/NewPages/policies.htm

Volunteers

Brownsville welcomes volunteers! They provide many special services for our school and students. The PTO Volunteer Coordinator helps community members and parents match their talents to the school's needs.

Brownsville joins the other schools within Albemarle County in working to keep school and student safety a focus. In accordance with Albemarle County Schools Policies and Procedures, there is a

VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION PROCESS (please refer to the Albemarle County Volunteer Handbook for complete volunteer information). This process is handled through Brownsville’s Main Office and includes the completion of a Registration Form, signing a Volunteer Code of Ethics, and presenting a valid photo ID that will be copied and kept on file. This process must be completed before volunteering/chaperoning will be permitted. This process only needs to be completed once as the information will remain on file in the office.

If you or someone you know would like to volunteer, please contact the school office or the Volunteer Coordinator. Parents with younger children are strongly encouraged to make childcare arrangements when they plan to volunteer in a classroom.

NOTIFICATION TO PARENTS

Dear Parent:

We attempt to discourage administration of medications during school hours and request that,

whenever possible, medication doses be scheduled other than school hours. We recognize that

this is not always possible and will cooperate in the administration of medication that must be

given during school hours.

Our regulations include:

1. Physician's orders for prescription medication to be administered shall specify in writing the

duration of the order and the name and dosage of the drug. The orders should be renewed at

least every school year.

2. Parents/guardians may request in writing that school personnel administer nonprescription

medication to children. The request shall specify the name and dosage of the medication. The

request should be renewed at least every school year.

3. Each school should keep a log book with consecutively numbered pages in which the

administration of medicine is recorded, in ink, showing the date and time of administration in

each case, the name of the prescribing physician (if applicable), and the signature of the

school nurse, principal or other school employee administering the preparation.

4. The specific written order of the physician and the written authorization of the parent should

be kept on file and all parental consents or authorizations should be renewed every school

year.

5. Not more than one month's supply of a prescribed medication shall be stored in a school. The

medication shall be stored in a designated place separate from first aid supplies and securely

locked at all times.

6. The school employee will give the medication to the student to be self-administered unless the

student is physically unable to administer the medication to himself /herself.

7. Unused medication shall be returned to the parent/guardian or shall be disposed of annually.

8. Any exception to this regulation shall be made by the principal/designee after written request

by the student's parent and authorization by the student's physician.
