Thanks to Mrs Linnett’s expertise at bus driving we all arrived safely at Leeton. We got some tea and headed to the Leeton Caravan Park - our home for the next 2 days. After a yummy Brekky at Mick’s Bakery we headed out into the cool morning to defend our title in the U16's competition. We had 8 games to play for the day. Each game was made up of 2 seven minute halves. We managed to defend our title and come away winners! Our results were Baranald 10 v Barellan2, Balranald 26 v Batlow 0, Balranald 14 v Coleambally 3, Balranald 11 v Tooleybuc 5, Balranald 24 v The Rock 0, Balranald 16 v Coolamon 2, Balranald 26 v Ungarie 9. We shot 127 goals for the day. Balranald U16's now head off to Dubbo for the finals in August. Our mates at Tooleybuc came second so we will see them in Dubbo as well. Opens On Friday, the Opens team contested for their position at Dubbo. We only had 4 games to play of 2 ten minute halves. We had some great games, but were undefeated! YAY! Opens team is also off to Dubbo in August. Our scores were Balranald 17 v Barellan 5, Balranald 21 v Coleambally 2, Balranald 16 vs Lockhart 9 and Balranald 15 v Coolamon 7. PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVES In addition to all of the great things that have been special to the past week at school, we have continued in our core business of delivering quality education in a caring and supportive environment. Throughout the week there are always many occasions of “catching someone doing something good”. Whether that’s helping to clean up after a lesson, sharing a snack or embracing the leadership opportunity when organising sports equipment at lunchtime (all of these were spotted at school this week) and there are also a few of the tougher moments that can test us out. Conflict is a normal part of life at school. When children learn constructive conflict

resolution skills, conflict can become an opportunity to learn more about themselves, others and create harmonious schools.

Force

l

Argues, yells, debates, threatens, imposes own view

Give in

Prevents fights, tries to make others happy

Avoid

Thinks or says “I don’t want conflict”; distracts; walks away

Compromise

I give a bit and I expect you to give a bit too

Sort out the Problem

Discover ways of helping everyone in the conflict to get what they want

The website kidsmatter.edu.au has many significant articles that are really worth reading – they provide methods, tools and support to help schools work with parents and carers, health services and the wider community, to nurture happy, balanced kids. One article that looked at social skills had these simple 20 points on its checklist.

1. Playing fairly 2. Being a good winner and being a good

loser 3. Being positive 4. Giving and receiving compliments 5. Taking risks & joining in 6. Speaking in front of an audience 7. Cooperating and negotiating 8. Dealing with fights and arguments 9. Suggesting & persuading instead of

11. Respecting other people’s opinions 12. Sharing 13. Including others 14. Listening and asking good questions 15. Have interesting conversations 16. Respond well to provocation 17. Tell someone if they’re annoying you 18. Ignore someone who is giving you a

hard time 19. Saying ‘no’ 20. Asking an adult for support

Just as we might find a Maths problem a little hard or not know how to start a story, we also have to learn at school the skills of getting through any tough moments in the classroom, the playground, at

home or on the sporting field. I guess that’s what they call getting a well-rounded education! By Nadine Matarazzo

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

On Tuesday, 22nd May the students from K/1 and 2 visited the Balranald Retirement Hostel, Bidgee Haven, to help them celebrate Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Students were accompanied by Mrs Linnett, Mrs Lockhart and Ms Redpath. Our students entertained the crowd by reading stories and singing ‘Hello to the World’ and ‘Waltzing Matilda’. The Hostel provided the children with some sausage rolls, little cakes and fresh water. The children were all extremely well behaved and were wonderful ambassadors for our school. Thank you to Bidgee Haven for inviting us to visit.

Wow! Excellent results displayed today when the students of the week

names were read out - most of these students are working in extra curricula activities SUCH AS LITERACY GROUPS AND MACQLIT that are offered at Balranald Central School

to increase reading, writing and speaking skills. Teachers have noticed a great improvement in these students in the classroom. Great effort students!

Simultaneous Storytelling On Wednesday, 23rd May primary students enjoyed reading Hickory Dickory Dash along with thousands of other primary students around the country. We had fun making puppets, chatterboxes and singing songs. Mrs K Helgeland

NAPLAN

Over the past two weeks students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 were part of the 25% of NSW schools who completed their NAPLAN testing online. We took advantage in this first year of the available 9 day test window – completing the Writing and Reading test in Week One and the Language Conventions and Numeracy test in Week Two. Desk top computers and laptops were used by students to access the four tests and most students enjoyed this change to the style of testing. NAPLAN causes a lot of discussion and debate in the media and the community. It is true that some kids were stressed a little about the tests over the past fortnight – but a little nervousness before any sort of test is perfectly normal. NAPLAN is definitely not a pass or fail test, and there are no repercussions for students if they do not do well. NAPLAN is a moment in test time that enables students to work together with their parents, teachers and peers to improve their learning outcomes. Students ‘enjoying’ their final NAPLAN test on Wednesday!

Lamb Marking Report Stage 5 Agriculture has spent another wonderful day with Bruce and Jo Salau, involved in Lamb marking activities. Students loaded the cradles, ear marked and tagged, castrated, tail docked and vaccinated their way through a couple of hundred lambs. It was great to see the cooperation between students and the willingness to get in and have a go. A big thank you to Bruce and Jo for providing us with this great experience, and to Jo whose morning tea and lunch was extremely well received as well. By Richard White

Stage 4 Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser On Saturday 2nd June, Stage 4 held its first of 5 fundraising BBQ’s at Bunnings in Swan Hill. The day was a huge success and Balranald Central School was highly supported by the community of Swan Hill and surrounding areas. It was also an opportunity to showcase some of what Balranald has to offer as our fundraising efforts were supported by the Balranald Bakery and Balranald Butchery. We were repeatedly complimented on the quality of what we were selling which is attributed to those who worked hard to prepare everything we needed for the day. We would like to acknowledge as well, those that gave up some or all of their time to help with the cooking and selling at the BBQ. Due to a last minute change of day this was quite difficult to organise, however, in true Balranald spirit, it all came together and the community was there to help. A very big thank you from Stage 4 to the following people:

Bianca Johnstone, Ben Johnstone, Amelia Calleja, Mr Prince and Miss Rance!! The next Bunnings BBQ will be held on Saturday 23rd June. We understand that with football and netball commitments it is difficult for people to attend Swan Hill to help. However, if anyone is available, and would like to volunteer some of their time on the day it would be greatly appreciated. If you are available and would like to help please phone the school and speak with either Ms Ilana Austen or Mr Will Godber.
