The Human Rights, Borders and Barriers symposium isfree and open to the public and will feature speakerstalking about such topics as human rights, migration flowsin the US, Europe, and Africa, terrorism, war conflicts, andfreedom of expression. Lectures and discussions willfocus on contemporary national and transnational issuessuch as Ferguson, Charleston, Baltimore, Charlie Hebdo,Paris attacks, and the global refugee crisis. ASUAS
Join the Arizona Territories Vintage Base Ball League as ithonors the man who gave the University of Arizona itslegendary slogan "Bear Down." The inspiring life story of U of A student body president andathlete John "Button" Salmon, Bisbee High School class of1921, will be celebrated during the 7th Annual Copper CityClassic Vintage base Ball Tournament to be held April 16 and17 at historic Warren Ballpark in Bisbee. Although best known as a football player for the ArizonaWildcats during the 1920s, "Button" Salmon was also a starcatcher for the U of A varsity baseball team and played atWarren Ballpark for Bisbee on its "outlaw league" team duringthe summer of 1926. Fatally injured in a traffic accident at the beginning of the 1926college football season, Salmon urged his teammates to "BearDown" in a final message. Members of Button Salmon's family will be on hand to honor hismemory, as will be University of Arizona Vice President forAthletics Greg Byrne. Also to be honored is Hal Chase, considered to be one of thefinest first basemen in major league baseball during the early20th century. "Prince Hal" first appeared at Warren Ballpark inNovember 1913, as a member of John McGraw's New YorkGiants, traveling across the country and around the globeduring the historic 1913-1914 World Tour by the Giants andChicago White Sox. He returned to Warren Ballpark onnumerous occasions as an outlaw league player and managerduring the mid-1920s.
Hal Chase III and Pat "Guitar Slim" Chase, grandsons of HalChase and other members of the Chase family will be inattendance during the tournament and will discuss theirgrandfather's baseball career during our Saturday eveningmusical event.
