Tennessee has long stood at the forefront intrack and field. The Volunteers have beenvictorious in the academic arena just as

often during the Bill Webb era.Tennessee placed 18 track and field athletes

on the 2005 SEC Academic Honor Roll.Additionally, three newcomers earned mention onthe SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll. Nofewer than 22 track and field/cross countryVolunteers posted posted GPAs of 3.0 or better, including three 4.0s, during fall 2005 semester.During the Webb era (1996-present), Tennesseeleads the way among conference rivals with 133selections to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Brian Mills earned inclusion on the 2005SEC Olympic Sports Good Works Team. Millsjoins a line of Vols on the community-mindedteam, including Marc Sylvester (2004), RockyDanners (2002) and John Dickson (1999).

In 2003, Stephen Harris concluded a careerbrimming with honors both on and off the trackwith an NCAA decathlon title and the inauguralMarine Corps Collegiate Athlete LeadershipAward.

Adrian Wheatley, an 800 man, was namedTennessee’s EdSouth Scholar-Athlete of the Yearin 2001. Decathlete Jeremy Racey was also pre-sented Tennessee’s male Scholar-Athlete of theYear Award for 1999.

However, the Vols’ success in the classroomand in the real world after leaving the friendlyconfines of Big Orange Country comes as no sur-prise to the Tennessee faithful. The University ofTennessee Athletics Department has developed asystem to allow the athlete to achieve his academ-ic goals.

With comprehensive services in advising, tutoring, counseling and management, the top-flight staff of the Thornton Athletics Student LifeCenter supplies the Volunteer student-athlete withall the tools necessary to be successful in theclassroom. It is part of a national trend that focus-es on a need for programs to develop student-ath-letes’ potential to be well-rounded, well-educatedindividuals.

The word “student” in student-athlete is notjust for show at Tennessee.

STEP UP CAMPAIGN EXCEEDS GOAL$1 Million Goes to Track and Field Improvements

Surpassing its goal by $4.3 million, theUniversity of Tennessee AthleticsDepartment announced the completion of“STEP UP - The Campaign for UT AthleticFacilities.”

The campaign, which began inDecember 2000, raised a record $48.61 mil-lion, racing past its original $44.25-milliongoal. Campaign funds helped renovate, expand and construct eight athletic facilities, and ensure every men’s and women’s athlet-ic program has the resources necessary tocompete for championships.

About $1 million of funding from theSTEP UP campaign was used to resurfaceTom Black Track in winter 2003.Additionally, a state-of-the-art Daktronicsvideo/scoreboard was added in spring 2003with campaign funds. The board not only

displays results after the completion of a race, but also can show live video of eventsanywhere on the track.

“These donors stepped forward to ensure a bright future for all 20 men’s andwomen’s sports at UT,” Mike Hamilton, director of men's athletics, said. “I want tothank these donors for their commitment to the athletic department.”

Most recently, the LaPorte family was honored by the department for their gener-ous contribution to Tennessee’s athletics success. On Nov. 25, 2005, members of theLaPorte family gathered with department officials to announce the naming ofTennessee’s track stadium. The facility will now be known as Tom Black Track atLaPorte Stadium.

The STEP UP campaign included nearly $5.5 million in commitments from morethan 130 former UT student-athletes.

“We are committed to building these quality facilities while also providing theother resources that each program needs to compete for championships,” Hamiltonsaid.
