WHEN TO COME SEE US... IMMIGRATION AND TRAVEL DOCUMENTS
Keep your passport and immigration documents (I-20/DS-2019)
safe. Never lend them to a friend or stranger. It is wise to make two
photocopies of your passport ID page: take one with you when you
travel, and leave one with a friend or student advisor.
If your passport is lost or stolen, report this IMMEDIATELY to our office,
your embassy, and the local police. Providing the embassy with a
photocopy of your passport data page will quicken the replacement
process. If your I-20/DS-2019 goes missing or is stolen, report this
IMMEDIATELY to our office.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
Please make sure to submit your check-in form after
attending the New International Student Orientation.

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED IN OUR OFFICE
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AND SCHOLAR SERVICES
We have many ways to get involved with our office. To learn more,
visit this website:
utc.edu/international-students/get_involved/
INTERNATIONAL BUDDY PROGRAM
The International Buddy Program (IBP) exists to help new
international students adjust to life in a new country. The IBP pairs
one current UTC domestic student with two new international
students. Domestic buddies help their international buddies
transition into U.S. culture, especially during the first few weeks of
the semester. Domestic buddies also benefit from this program by
gaining new friends and insights into other cultures.
GO GLOBAL THEMED LIVING COMMUNITY
The Go Global housing community allows returned study abroad
students, international exchange students, and ESL students
from all over the world to live with and learn from one another.
International and domestic Go Global students live on campus in
Stophel Apartments.
INTERNATIONAL ORIENTATION LEADERS (IOL)
International Orientation Leaders (IOLs) help welcome new
international students to UTC campus and into the Chattanooga
community.
INTERNATIONAL TEA TIME
Our office hosts International Tea Times throughout the semester.
These allow both international and domestic students to socialize
over different types of teas, making friends through cultural
exchange.
NASHVILLE AND ATLANTA TRIPS
Our office offers fun and educational trips to nearby cities such as
Nashville and Atlanta. These trips are a great opportunity to meet
other international and domestic students and learn more about
U.S. culture.
INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK
Every year, our office hosts a week full of activities and events
during International Education Week. During this week, students
can celebrate cultural diversity and international education through
a trivia night, a talent show, a public speaking contest, a soccer
tournament, and more.
HISTORY OF UTC
The University of Tennessee at
Chattanooga (UTC) was founded in
1886 as a private school under the
name Chattanooga University. In 1889,
the university was combined with a
religiously affiliated school and named
Grant University. Eighteen years later,
Grant University became the University
of Chattanooga. The university remained
private for 83 years until it joined the
University of Tennessee system in 1969
to form the UTC campus.
UTC is accredited by the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools
Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)
and is dedicated to helping students
succeed in their academic and personal
endeavours by providing a nurturing
environment, a welcoming community,
and valuable opportunities.
The Office of International Student and
Scholar Services plays an important
role in fulfilling the University’s mission
to achieve “…excellence by actively
engaging students, faculty and staff;
embracing diversity and inclusion;
inspiring positive change; and enriching
and sustaining our community.”

BANKING
Budgeting will be an important part
of your time studying in the U.S.
Before leaving your home country,
pay attention to the exchange rate
between your country’s currency
and the U.S. dollar. Learn to think in
dollars. Do not carry large amounts
of cash. You may open a checking
account after arriving in the U.S.
UTC strongly recommends that
you notify your bank in your home
country that you will begin accessing
your account from a new location.
Some banking options near campus
are listed to the right. Before opening
an account, check with your home
bank to find out if it is affiliated with
any Chattanooga banks.
Please note that our office does not endorse these banks and only lists them as available options.
U.S. CULTURE
U.S. culture may be very different from that of your home country.
We suggest that you become familiar with some U.S. cultural
practices to prepare yourself for life at UTC and in Chattanooga.
