Newcomer Program Vision Statement:

The Newcomer Program educates and values the rich

diversity of newcomer students and families by

providing both a challenging academic environment and comprehensive

community partnerships that foster empowerment and growth for global

citizenship.

Bullying - Bullying is prohibited

o Bullies can be one student or groups of students

o There are 4 kinds of bullying:

o Physical: hurting other people

o Social: leaving people out

o Verbal: saying mean or hurtful things

o Cyber: saying or doing mean or hurtful things on

the internet or via text

o Students may not bully

o At school

o Traveling to and from school (on the bus)

o At school events

o If you see someone bullying or being bullied, talk to an

adult in the building immediately

o Consequences for bullying are serious

o In-school suspension

o Out-of-school suspension

o Out-of-School Suspension and Parent Conference Regarding

Probation/Alternative Placement/Expulsion

Cell Phones/ Electronics/ Headphones:

You can have your phone at school but it should be off or on silent.

You cannot use your phone or headphones in class or in any hallway. If adults see your phone, they will take them and

the teacher may give it back to you when they decide.

You can use your phone in the cafeteria

during breakfast and lunch.

You cannot record, have, view, send, or share pictures or videos of

violence or sexual content at school, school events, or the bus.

If you have an emergency, your family can

call the school at 317-693-5613.

Gang and Criminal Activity:

No gangs, destructive behavior, or illegal group behavior on school property, on school buses,

and/or at school events.

No retaliation against individuals who report gang or criminal organization activity, destructive

or illegal group behavior, or who are victims, witnesses, bystanders, or other people with

reliable information about these activities.

Dress Code:

Students must wear the IPS uniform: Pants/Skirts – black, navy blue or khaki color

Shirts – polo of any color

Shoes – no open-toed shoes or sandals

Hoodies – no sweaters or jackets with hoods

Sweaters or jackets – must be a solid color

Hats – no hats, headscarves or bandanas,

except for religious reasons

Put hats in your lockers or a teacher will take them

- Out of Uniform Passes

are good for ONE DAY

- If you do not wear your

uniform, your family

must come to bring you

one OR you will serve a

detention during lunch.

Arriving Tardy:

• You must be in class before the bell rings

• If you arrive after the bell, you are late or tardy

• There are consequences for arriving tardy

Arriving Tardy Continued:

4 • Be a teacher assistant (cleaning, scraping gum off tables, helping elementary students, presenting about your behavior, or other)

5 • In School Suspension (ISS) with no phone

• No regular class and no lunch with friends

• Alone all day with a teacher, working

6 • Out of School Suspension (OSS)

• You cannot come to school for one day

• Your family must come to have a meeting about the tardy problem

Expectations around School

o Bathroom • Use the bathroom quickly between classes or with a

pass during class

• Talk quietly – no yelling

• Hands to ourselves – no pushing or hitting

• Keep water fountains clean – no spitting or trash

• Flush the toilet and use the trash can

• Turn your water off – no throwing water

• Use only what you need – no wasting water or paper towels

o Hallway/ Hall Passes • You have 3 passes per quarter

• You cannot leave in the first or last 20 minutes of class

• Write your name in pen

• Please walk quietly in the hallway

• Kissing, touching, and running is not allowed in the hallway

o Classroom • Be on time and ready for class

• Only use approved electronics

• Use English as much as you can

• Stay in your seat

• Listen and follow directions

• 1 voice at a time

• Do your best work

• Ask for help - raise your hand

• Use respectful language with each other

o Bus • The driver’s job is to transport you safely

• There are many dangers and distractions on the

road so LISTEN TO YOUR DRIVER

• Your driver may tell you where

to sit – Please move to that seat

without arguing

• Do not listen to music without headphones

• Riding the bus is a privilege – if there are problems, you can no

longer ride the bus

o Lockers

• Only you can use your locker

• Your locker combination is a secret

• No food except your lunch

• Mr. Rodriguez can search my locker anytime

o Library • Using the library is a privilege

• How can you respect the library books, library space and the librarian?

o Take one book at a time

o Guard your book

o Whisper when you’re in the library

o Do not write in the books

o If your book is in your bag, be careful with juice and milk

o Be careful turning the pages so they don’t rip out

• When you exhibit core values, you can earn blue tickets

• Write your name on them and save them

• On Friday, at lunch you can turn in your blue tickets for prizes!

o 5 Blue Tickets = Hall Pass

o 10 Blue Tickets = Choose 1 prize

from Prize Bucket and draw for

No Uniform Pass

o 20 Blue Tickets = Milkshake AND

No Uniform Pass

What if chart (consequences for good and bad behavior):

What happens if I follow class rules? What happens if I do not follow class rules? Teacher can:

• Praise you

• Call your family (good news!)

• Make you DJ for the day

• Make you Queen/King for the day

• Give you a shout out to the class

• Give you a “No Homework Pass”

• Give you an extra bathroom pass

• Give you a blue ticket

Teacher - Managed Administration- - Managed Level 1 Behaviors

Usually dealt with by teacher and involve natural consequences

Support Staff etc.

Level 3 and 4 Behaviors

• Talking during instruction

• Eating/drinking in class without permission

• Using profanity/ Inappropriate comments

• Uniform violation

Lunch detention (classroom cleaning, removing gum, emptying recycling,

• Restorative conversation with teacher, student(s) and Mr. Slater and/or support staff

• Community service

• Parent conference

• Behavior/attendance contract
