TheYin andYang sections of theSymbol are in goldand jade respectively. This symbol,which representsthe universe, light and darkness, life and death,wasadopted primarily because it was Chinese in originand character. More significantly, it represents theessenceofChinesephilosophy-inconsonancewiththetraditionoftheschool.

Whythenthestrictadherencetothecoloursjadeandgold?TheanswerliessteepedinChinesetraditionalnorms–forgoldandjadeinHokkien(KimGek)connotesayoungChinesegirlbroughtupandeducatedinthebestmanner.Oneobservestherelevanceofthisconnotationinthecontextofourcurrenteducationalsystem,wheretheimpartingofculturalvaluesisstressed.PerhapsSCGScanclaimthedistinctionofbeingoneofthefirstfewnon-sectarianaidedschoolstoinculcateculturalvaluesimplicitlyrather than explicitly - for these values have beenwith us since theinceptionoftheschool.

TheSingaporeChineseGirls’Schoolwasestablishedupona bedrockofhighstandardsandtheaspirationandwilltocreateequaleducationalopportunities for girls as ameans of developing their character andacademic ability. TheSchool colours are gold and jade, these arising from aChinesemetaphor “金玉” or “ Jinyu “which refers to young ladieswhoare thetreasuresof their familybecause theyembody thevirtuesof filialpiety,gentility,kindness,proprietyanddiligence.

SingaporeChineseGirls’ School is a rare type of school inSingapore. It iscountedinseveralcategorieswhicharenotcommontomostotherschools.Asaschool,SCGSis:

• Afullschool;

• Asingle-sexschool;

• Asinglesessionschool;

• Agrant-in-aidschoolwithanIndependentSecondaryDivision;and

• Apremierschool.

Founded in�899by fiveStraitsChinesegentlemen, includingSirOngSiangSongandDrLimBoonKeng,itbeganasaschoolforChinesegirls,teachingromanisedMalay,Chinese,English,Arithmetic,Geography,MusicandSewing.TheschoolopenedinHillStreetinJune�899withjust7pupils.By�900therewere �0 and the schoolwas, by then, aGovernmentAidedSchool and thepupilsweretaughtuntilStandard�.

�908 saw the school with an average of �00 pupils andSCGSwas formed into a limited liability companyand theschooloccupiedthebuildingatthecornerofColemanandHillStreets(later thesiteof theHillStreetFireStation). In�9�5itmoved toEmeraldHill, to thesiteofDrLimBoonKeng’sfamilyhome,whereitwastoremainforcloseto70years.

In �99�, SCGSmoved to �90DunearnRoad, a site fivetimesthesizeofitsEmeraldHillHome.

As a full school, SCGS is run as one, with a commonpurpose and vision. It sees itselfmeeting the educational

needsofeachpupilat theirpointofneedandsees theschoolnurturingandgroomingthegirlstobecomecapablewomenofcharacterandrelevance.

Aswegrow,wewelcomenewbloodandfreshideas,especiallyatSec.�,byopeningour doors for amajor intakewhile not denyingourPrimary� pupilspriorityforentry.AgainatSec.�,theschoolwelcomesscholarswhobringtheworldtotheschoolevenaswesendourpupilsabroadinvisitsandexchanges.The school also approaches its programmeasawhole, taking into account the deliveryofeducationthroughtheprovisionofasoundacademic foundation and teaching lessonsfor life through its co-curricular programme.The varietywithin this balancedandholisticapproach makes the school a lively andinterestinghomeschoolforyounggirls.

SCGSwasapioneerinmanyCo-curricularactivities–GirlGuides,RedCross,NationalCadetCorps,gymnasticsanddance. It entered into theseactivitieswithgustogarneringtopawardsandaccolades.

ThePrincipalsandstaffof theschool,beginningwith thestringofdedicatedEnglishHeadmistressesof the school in theearly until thepost-WWII yearsensured that high standardswere kept.Beyond them,MissTanSockKern(�95� – �978) andMissRosalindHeng (�979 – �00�), took the school togreaterheightsinreputationandachievement.

In�989,SCGSwasoneoftwopioneergirls’schoolstotakeonindependentstatusand in itsgrowthsince thencontinues to rankamong the topschoolsin Singapore. The school has embarked onKnowledgeManagement, andis actively examining and developing a wide range of authentic learningexperiencestobuildtheknowledgeworkerfortheworldofthefuture.

SCGS education promises you holistic teaching, care and exposure inthe hands of a capable and committed professional team, spread over aprogrammeoftenyears.

The school also received the Sustained Achievement Award for Sports in 2003 and the Sustained Achievement Award for Arts in 2004 and 2005.

The school’s success is due to the total commitment of the teachers towards the implementation of our comprehensive physical education, performing arts and co-curricular programmes focusing on basic skills and special skills, as well as the full support of our parents in the inculcation of a healthy and balanced lifestyle for our pupils.

The Secondary School has been awarded the Trim and Fit (TAF) Silver/Gold Award for the last five years, 2002-2006. The cornerstone of its success lies in the rigorous and vibrant Physical Education Programme together with the inculcation of a healthy lifestyle, good eating habits and proper feminine and physical grooming. The School has attained the SAA for Physical Fitness in 2005 and 2006.

The SCGS Endowment Fund assists needy pupils by giving amonthly allowance to provide for their pocketmoney and transportexpenses and paying for the pupils’ books, examination fees andcompulsoryenrichmentprogrammes.

about��strong in thePrimaryDivisonand57strong in theSecondaryDivison.InthePrimaryDivison,prefectscomefromthePrimary5and�levels.IntheSecondaryDivision,prefectscomefromSecondary�to�.Prefectsarenominatedbytheteachers,andelectedbythepupils.TheBoardisheadedbyaHeadPrefectand�Vice-HeadPrefects.

The chief duty of the prefects is to dealwith disciplinarymatters,suchasmaintaining theschool rules.Theycheckon latecomers,helptosupervisetheclassesintheteacher’sabsence,carryoutspotcheckstoensurethatthecorrectuniformiswornandpupilsarecomplyingwithschoolrules.Theyalsoperformdutiesasrequiredduringofficialschoolfunctions.

The prefects are always ready to serve the school. In carrying outtheirdutiesinacaringandconcernedmanner,theyupholdthemottooftheschoolandactasrolemodelsfortheotherpupils.
