Architecture Chair Candidates Visit After Spring BreakStudents are invited to interact with the candidates for chair of the ISU architecture department, who will be on campus following spring break. Maurizio Sabini, currently an associate professor of architecture and urban design and international studies coordinator at the Kent State University College of Architecture and Environmental Design, will be here March 22 and 23. You can attend his public presentation and open forum from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in Kocimski Auditorium, 101 Design, followed by a reception from 5 to 6 p.m. in the South Forum (near the Reading Room). Sabini will have lunch with undergraduate and graduate students from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 23, in the Lightfoot Forum.

Kent Spreckelmeyer, currently a professor of architecture at the University of Kansas School of Architecture, Design and Planning, will be here March 29 and 30. You can attend his public presentation and open forum from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 29, in Kocimksi Auditorium, with the reception from 5 to 6 p.m. in the South Forum. He will have lunch with students from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 30, in the Lightfoot Forum.

Urban Planning Expert to Speak on Globalization of Planning March 22 at ISU College of DesignUrban planning expert Enrique Silva will address the political and institutional opportunities emerging from the globalization of planning practice in a presentation Thursday, March 22, at the Iowa State University College of Design. Silva’s lecture, “Governance and Planning: Locating the will and power to plan in the Americas,” will be from 3:40 to 5 p.m. in Room 130 Design. It is free and open to the public. [Read more]

Architecture Associate Professor Mitchell Squire Featured in ‘Future Great’s Issue of ArtReview MagazineMitchell Squire, associate professor of architecture, is one of 25 international artists to be featured in the ArtReview annual “Future Greats” issue. For the past eight years, the London-based magazine has enlisted leading international artists, critics and curators to select artists whose practices many have yet to hear about, but which might become significant in the near future. For Squire’s feature, a short essay by Chicago artist and Theaster Gates accompanies a pair of images from one of Squire’s recent video works. Both Squire and Gates are College of Design alumni. Squire received a BArch in 1994 and MArch in 2001. Gates received a BS in community and regional planning in 1996 and MA in interdisciplinary graduate studies in 2005. [Read more]

Work by ISA Associate Professor Teresa Paschke in Major Fiber Art ExhibitionTeresa Paschke, associate professor of integrated studio arts, is one of 68 artists from 15 countries whose work is represented in “Outside/Inside the Box,” an exhibition of innovative fiber/textile art that transcends disciplines and combines historic concepts with contemporary perspectives. The show is on view March 3-31 in the Icebox Project Space at the Crane Arts Building in Philadelphia. A closing reception will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 31. [Read more]

BPMI Artwork at Gallery in the RoundArtwork by 28 students (freshmen through seniors) and two faculty in the pre-Biological/Premedical Illustration and BPMI degree program is on display through April 6 in the “BPMI: Communicating Science through Art” exhibition at the Gallery in the Round, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ames, 1015 N. Building Hours Over Spring BreakThe College of Design will observe abbreviated hours during spring break next week as follows. The building will close at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 10. Hours will be 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday, March 11, through Saturday, March 17. We will reopen at 7 a.m. Sunday, March 18, and resume normal hours (24 hours/day).

Design Store Hours After BreakThe Design Store on the second floor will have new hours after spring break. Because Fridays have seen little to no traffic so far this semester, the store will now offer Sunday evening hours to try to accommodate more students when you’re in the building. Beginning March 19, hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, closed Friday and Saturday, 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday. The store will be closed Friday, March 9; Sunday, April 1 (for inventory), and Sunday, April 8 (Easter). New signage will help inform everyone of these changes.

Registration Period for Summer and Fall 2012The registration period for Summer 2012 and Fall 2012 will open the week after spring break. AccessPlus registration hours are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and most Sundays. Seniors can begin to register Tuesday, March 20. Juniors can begin Tuesday, March 27. Sophomores begin Tuesday, April 3, and freshmen begin Tuesday, April 10.

Add/Drop and Pass/Not Pass DeadlinesFriday, March 23, is the last day to add or drop a full-semester course or withdraw without extenuating circumstances. It is also the last day to change a full-semester course to or from Pass/Not Pass. Remember that courses changed to a graded basis after Jan. 23 count toward the total allowable P/NP credits used for graduation.

Stash the Trash/Veishea Service Day 2012Sign up now for Stash the Trash/Veishea Service Day 2012, which will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 24. You can work alone, with an organization or with your family or friends to pick up litter and other debris in Ames. Trash bags and gloves will be available the day of the event in the Reiman Gardens parking lot. A free lunch will be provided, and Reiman Gardens offers free admission to volunteers. This year, everyone who participates that day will also earn “merits,” which will grant them access to exclusive deals from more than 50 locally-owned businesses. Grin City Collective Emerging Artist Residency ApplicationsWriters, visual and performance artists who are juniors or seniors in college are invited to apply for the 2012 Grin City Collective Emerging Artist Residency. Residents live, work and volunteer communally in and around Grinnell. You are provided room and board, a private area in a large studio space, and a $100 stipend for the one-month session, which culminates in a gallery show and sale at the Grinnell Arts Center. Session 1 will be from June 17 to July 14; Session 2 runs from July 22 to Aug. 18. Applications are due Friday, March 23. [View full guidelines and application form]

Multicultural Student Affairs Academic/Leadership/Service Award NominationsThe Office of Multicultural Student Affairs invites nominations of U.S. ethnic students and multicultural faculty and staff for several awards. The Scholarly Leadership Award is open to undergraduate or graduate students who have excelled in their area of study despite extenuating circumstances and/or have made significant improvements in their cumulative GPA over a minimum of two semesters (spring 2011-fall 2011). The Student Change Agent of the Year award is open to full-time undergraduate or graduate students in good academic standing (minimum 2.5 GPA for undergraduates and 3.5 GPA for graduates) who demonstrate community service that significantly impacts the ISU, Ames and surrounding communities. The Faculty/Staff Change Agent of the Year award is open to faculty and staff members who exemplify diversity within the classroom and working environment and demonstrate community service that significantly impacts the ISU, Ames and surrounding communities.

Plato’s Cave and Visual Resources CollectionPlato’s Cave is a diverse and vital online resource for undergraduate study and research. This shared resource comprises a large database of critical images and descriptive data available to anyone in the university community, on or off campus, with a network ID and password. Plato’s Cave includes original images from faculty collections and from the College of Design’s Visual Resources Collection. You can find the VRC on Facebook and also check out the blog.

BRL Juried Student Art CompetitionStudents enrolled in integrated studio arts/integrated visual arts courses are invited to submit work created in any ART, ART IS or ART ED class to the Biorenewables Research Laboratory Juried Student Art Competition. A prospectus and entry form are available in 156 Design. Submissions must include a 150- to 300-word artist statement describing the life cycle of the materials used in the artwork OR the life cycle of the subject matter depicted. Entries should be dropped off between 1 and 5 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in the BRL lobby. Accepted work will be on display April 20, 2012, through April 5, 2013. Awards including $750 Best in Show, $250 First Prize, $125 Second prize and $75 Third Prize will be announced at the opening reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 20. PSAid Student CompetitionThe PSAid (Public Service Announcements for International Disasters) competition offers students an opportunity to help improve the lives of disaster victims by educating potential donors on the best way to support relief work. You are invited to create engaging print and video public service announcements (PSAs) that illustrate the importance of effective (cash versus material) public donations in support of international disaster relief. Entries will be accepted by electronic upload through April 30. Winners in each category will be announced in mid-May. [See complete rules and guidelines]

Field Studies in Chinese Architecture Information SessionPaul Shao, professor of architecture, will hold an information session for the “Field Studies in Chinese Architecture” study abroad program at 7 p.m. today, March 7, in 130 Design. Students on this program have the opportunity to interact directly with leading professionals in Chinese art, architecture, landscape and urban design while gaining an understanding of the historical, social, economic and political forces that have shaped trends and practices in those fields. You also will learn about alternative ways to create art and built environments and the symbiotic relationship of these elements with the natural environment of China.

This two-week (May 7-21), three-credit study abroad experience (ARCH 576 section CN) is open to students in second year through the graduate programs in all majors. You are required to participate in an orientation program prior to the trip. If interested but unable to attend this information session, email Professor Shao, pshao@iastate.edu.
