IN THE NEWS ISU Graphic Design Student to Compete in National Fabric Design Competition Graphic design graduate student Michele Rosenboom (BFA 2000 Interior Design) of Orange City has been selected to compete with nine other textile designers in “REPEAT: A Fabric Design Competition” hosted by The Printed Bolt, LLC. The 10 designers will complete monthly design challenges from March through August to determine the winner. You can read more about Rosenboom and the other competitors and vote for your favorite on Printed Bolt’s website. A rotating panel of guest judges also will add their input each month. Architecture Lecturer LaDan Omidvar Receives Gender Equity Award LaDan Omidvar (BArch 1982 / MCRP 1985 / MArch 1996), lecturer in architecture and co- founder of Iowa Women in Architecture, was honored with the Margaret Sloss Women’s Center Gender Equity Award at an event held Tuesday, March 20. Please join us in congratulating Professor Omidvar on this well-deserved recognition! Ethos Magazine Creative Director Applications Ethos Magazine is accepting applications for executive positions, including creative director. Graphic design students especially are encouraged to apply. If interested, send your resume and a paragraph explaining why you are interested in the position to Devon O’Brien, editor in chief, by 5 p.m. Friday, March 23. Design Ambassadors Club Organization Meeting The Design Ambassadors Club will hold an organizational meeting at 5:30 p.m. today, March 21, in 130 Design. Members of this student organization meet with prospective students and families to share their experiences as Design students, give tours to visiting groups on campus and raise money for first-year scholarships. Design students at all levels are welcome and encouraged to attend! We will need volunteers throughout the remainder of the spring semester and the summer as well. Artwork Dropoff for Focus Juried ExhibitThe Student Union Board invites submissions for Focus 2012, the annual spring art exhibit at the Memorial Union. Any student currently enrolled at ISU is eligible to enter; you can submit up to three artworks in any media for consideration. Drop off your work for jurying from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, in the MU Gallery. The juror will choose about 40 pieces for the exhibit, which will run from April 1 through May 4. Cash awards will be announced at a reception at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 7. For more information, contact Letitia Kenemer, MU fine arts coordinator, (515) 294-0971.

Graphic Design Senior Portfolio Night FundraisersMark your calendars to enjoy some tasty treats and help the graphic design senior class raise money for its Senior Portfolio Night! The class will receive 10 percent of the profits of two Ames businesses during the following times: Cold Stone Creamery, 1310 S. Duff Ave., #101, 6 - 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, and Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt, 637 Lincoln Way, 4 - 10 p.m. Friday, April 13. Please stop in! Please note you must mention the Graphic Design Student Association (GDSA) at the cash register at Cold Stone for your purchase to count toward the 10 percent.

Iowa Women in Architecture Social & Speed-Mentoring WorkshopJoin women in the design professions for an evening of networking and mentoring from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 30, at RDG Planning and Design, 301 Grand Ave. in Des Moines. Bring your own questions, or use suggested questions and topics provided by host organization Iowa Women in Architecture (iaWia). Light snacks and beverages will be provided. This event is free to members of iaWia, or $5 for non-members. All experience levels are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Open Forum with ISU President and ProvostStudents are invited to attend an open forum with ISU President Steven Leath and Executive Vice President and Provost Elizabeth Hoffman from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in Gallery 181. Meet our new university president and hear his plans for the coming year.

Awards Day Brunch TicketsOur annual Awards Day program this year will be on Wednesday, April 18. The reception will begin at 9:30 a.m. with brunch served in Gallery 181, followed by the presentation of several departmental and college awards at 10 a.m. in the Lightfoot Forum. Those who wish to attend the brunch should pick up a free ticket in the Dean’s Office (134 Design) by 5 p.m. Friday, April 6. Eat yummy food and help celebrate the accomplishments of College of Design students, faculty and staff!

Smithsonian Folklife Festival Interactive Exhibit Feature CompetitionIowa State University is one of 18 land-grant universities selected to participate in this year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall in Washington, DC, for two weeks in June and July. The ISU exhibit design committee seeks student ideas for creative, interactive features to be incorporated into our exhibit on design thinking and innovation. The competition is open to all ISU undergraduate and graduate students enrolled this academic year (2011-2012). You may work individually or in small teams to develop entries, which will be due electronically by 11 p.m. Saturday, April 7. Download the competition brief (PDF) for complete details.

Have an Announcement to Share? Submit Your News!If your student organization has an event planned or needs to get the word out to other College of Design students about an opportunity or deadline, you can submit an announcement to Design Student News. Please email [email protected] with as much information as you can provide (event or opportunity, date, time, location, fee if any, contact details, etc.). The student e-blast is sent every other Wednesday afternoon throughout the semester. Please try to submit your announcement no later than 5 p.m. two days prior. The next one will be April 4 (so try to have your news submitted by 5 p.m. Monday, April 2).

Field Studies in Chinese Architecture Information Session TonightPaul Shao, professor of architecture, will hold an information session for the “Field Studies in Chinese Architecture” study abroad program at 7 p.m. today, March 21, in 130 Design. Students on this program have the opportunity to interact directly with leading professionals in Chinese art, architecture, landscape and urban design while gaining an understanding of the historical, social, economic and political forces that have shaped trends and practices in those fields. You also will learn about alternative ways to create art and built environments and the symbiotic relationship of these elements with the natural environment of China.This two-week (May 7-21), three-credit study abroad experience (ARCH 576 section CN) is open to students in second year through the graduate programs in all majors. You are required to participate in an orientation program prior to the trip. If interested but unable to attend this information session, email Professor Shao.
