General Program and Trip Descriptions

All trips meet at Watauga High School with the majority being suitable for a beginner.

Specific trip details will be given at membership meetings call Mountain Alliance at

263-0383 or check out our website www.mountainalliance.org for more information.

Fall Fundraiser Climbathon: Huge night of fun, and climbing. Help us raise money to keep offering

exciting opportunities for Mountain Alliance students. The event will be held on

Mountain Alliance Fall 2009 Personal Outdoor Discover Series (PODS)

What’s new at Mountain Alliance? This fall we are offering a new series of adventures!

Each POD will be a series of workshops students will participate in to discover and learn

the skills and techniques of each POD topic. Each POD is designed to accommodate

students of all still levels. You will not want to miss out on this exciting new series!

Backpacking 1: The Backpacking POD 1 will have 4 hiking trips leading up to a weekend backpacking excursion. Students

will be instructed on the basics for planning and leading a hiking and backpacking trip. Information about

the nearby environment, Leave No Trace ethics, and outdoor cooking skills will also be learned in this

POD. The dates for the POD will be Tuesdays: 9/15, 9/22, 9/29, and 10/6 with a Final Trip Friday-

Sunday 10/9-11. Each trip date will include a hiking trip with a lesson plan. The Final Trip will be a 2

night backpacking trip.

Backpacking 2: The Backpacking POD 2 will have 4 hiking trips leading up to a weekend backpacking excursion. Students

will be instructed on the basics for planning and leading a hiking and backpacking trip. Information about

the nearby environment, Leave No Trace ethics, and outdoor cooking skills will also be learned in this

POD. The dates for the POD will be Fridays: 9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/9 with a Final Trip on 10/30-11/1.

Each trip date will include a hiking trip with a lesson plan. The Final Trip will be a 2 night backpacking

trip.

Biking: The Biking POD will explore both road and mountain biking in a 5 week course. Students will learn about

the different parts of a bike, bike safety, bike repair and maintenance, and about the local Boone Bike

Initiative. Each trip will consist of a bike ride and a lesson plan. The dates for this trip are Thursdays 9/24,

10/8, 10/22, 11/5 with a Final Trip TBD.

Climbing: The Climbing POD will be an introductory excursion into the world of Rock Climbing. Students will have

three days of climbing at the Footsloggers Tower 9/24,10,8, and 10,29. Students will end the series with

an overnight camping trip where they will climbing on real rock and learn to rappel! Students will choose

between one of the following dates: 10/24-25 or 11/7-8.

Outdoor Photography: In this POD students will learn the ABC's of photography as it applies to an outdoor setting. Students will

learn the in's and out's of their camera, what it takes to become confident in setting up great photos, how to

use photoshop to make small modifications to their prints, and how to print and frame a finished product.

After four weeks of learning the ropes, students will debut their final work in a gallery showing at Reid's

Cafe as a part of the Boone Art Crawl. Get excited to take lots of amazing pictures and learn some really

helpful photography skills. Dates for this event are Thursdays 9/17, 10/1, 10/22, and 11/5. The Reid’s

Café presentation will take place Friday 11/6.
