THE IMPORTANCE OF MEDIA TRAINING

The Athletics Communications staff hasdeveloped this guide to supply you withuseful tools that will enable you to estab-lish and maintain positive relationshipswith the media. Villanova’s intercolle-giate athletics program is one of rich his-tory and success and we’ve developed apassionate and diverse fan base lookingfor insight. Because of that, media out-lets will be at Villanova throughout theyear.

It is imperative that you remember yourimage and the image of your team areintertwined. What we say and do, asindividuals and as a team, on the fieldand away from it, help form the messagethat we send to people who followVillanova Athletics.

Dealing with the vast needs of our mediacan be challenging, though it providesthe opportunity for you and your team toshape a long-lasting and benefical imagewith our fans. In addition to serving thatimportant bridge, working with themedia will help you in your developmentas a young adult and as a leader of char-acter in the community.

ACCESSIBILITY• The media has a job to do, and part ofyour responsibility is to be accessible tothem. Accessibility should be workedinto your routine but we will alwayswork around your schedule.

HONESTY• Bending the truth will ultimatelyalways find its way back to you! Do notgive the media a chance to reveal a“gotcha” moment.

HUMILITY• There is no “I” in team. Arrogance is asure-fire way to garner unwanted atten-tion and alienate you with others. A hum-ble athlete is a human athlete and easierto relate to.

ACCOUNTABILITY• The acceptance of responsibilitydemonstrates to the media, the fans andyour teammates that you are matureenough to handle the peaks and valleysthat accompany you in one of the largestmedia markets in the nation.

WE’RE HERE TO HELP• The Villanova AthleticCommunications staff exists to serve asyour advocate and liaison with themedia. Our goal is to provide you withthe assistance you need to work efficiently and effectively with them.USE US!

VILLANOVA ATHLETICS MEDIA RELATIONS

The Villanova Athletics Media Relationsoffice is located on the second floor of thestage in Jake Nevin Field House and servesas a communications link betweenVillanova teams, student-athletes, coaches, administrators and the media.

The office tries to promote timely andaccurate coverage of the Wildcats by coor-dinating interviews, servicing the informa-tion needs of reporters, and compiling andmaintaining Wildcat statistics, photographs, historical records and the intercollegiateathletic department’s official web site:www.villanova.com.

We firmly believe it is in the best interestsof the university and student-athletes toprovide optimum service to the media. Atthe same time, we realize that an athlete’sclasswork, team practices and competitionschedule comes first and we will do ourbest to coordinate interviews and othermedia requests accordingly.

If you feel overloaded with too many inter-views or want advice on how to handle aninterview, don’t hesitate to talk to a mem-

ber of the athletic media relations office. That’s why we’re here - to assist Villanovaathletes and coaches in dealing with themedia.

Media Rules for VillanovaAthletes:

• Only do interviews that have been set upby a member of the Media Relations office.

• Do not give out your phone number to themedia. A member of the media relationsoffice will arrange all phone interviews.

• If you have an interview scheduled, punc-tuality and reliability are critical. Show upat the time you agreed upon. Because ofdeadlines, the media relies on you to be ontime. Should you have a problem makingthe appointment, always call your mediarelations contact.

• We are at your service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It’s okay to call us atthe office or on our mobile phones if amedia-related question comes up. Ourphone numbers are listed in this guide.

SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY

Villanova Athletics encourages your use of Social Media provided it is used in the proper way. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter,Instagram, SnapChat and other sites are a great way for coaches and student-athletes to share information about their programs. Oneof the problems with Social Media is that it is instant and everyone can see what you are posting. With that in mind, the followingguidelines have been established.

• The Athletics Media Relations contact for your sport, in con-junction with the Office of Compliance, will follow you onTwitter and monitor your overall use of social media to ensure thebelow guidelines are being adhered to. Disregard of the guide-lines will be dealt with by your coaches and Villanova administra-tion.

• You are representing Villanova University and are expected toact accordingly. We encourage you to write knowledgeably andaccurately, with appropriate professionalism.

• Despite disclaimers, your online interaction can result in media, fans, staff, peers and members of the public forming opinions on your team.

• Postings should not include Villanova Athletic logos unless permission is requested and granted.

• You may not share information that is confidential. This includes updates about practice, injuries or any other data that has not been publicly released by the Athletic CommunicationsOffice.

• You should never claim or imply that you are speaking on behalf of Villanova University orVillanova Athletics.

• Teams and coaches with Social Media pages, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, should notify their Athletic Communications contact and the Marketing department so properlinks can be established.

• Respect those that ‘follow’ and ‘friend’ you. Never use foul language, post inappropriate pho-tos or disrespect your audience.

• Honor the privacy rights of your teammates and Villanova staff members by asking their per-mission before writing about them in a manner that might be considered to be a breach of theirprivacy and confidentiality.

• Ask first. If you are unsure about posting something, seek the guidance of a member of MediaRelations or your sport’s administrative supervisor.
