Attendance ProceduresIf your child is going to be absent from school, please call the office at 485-8285.

Excused Absences• Doctor/Dentist appointment

• Confirmed illness

• Family death

All other absences (including vacations) are considered unexcused. Please send a note to the office when your child returns to school following an absence. Doctor’s notes can be faxed to 313-3489. Failure to report an absence and submit a note will result in an unexcused absence.

TardinessPlease ensure that your child arrives in enough time to be in his or her classrooms by 9:05 a.m. daily. Students who arrive past 9:15 a.m. will not be able to eat breakfast. The instructional day is from 9:05 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. If students arrive late or leave early, they accumulate tardy occurrences on their attendance record. For additional information on attendance, please contact the office of Pupil Personnel at 313-3489.

TruancyStudents who have been absent from school without a valid excuse for three or more days or tardy without a valid excuse on three or more days are considered truant. Once a student has been identified as truant, his or her name will go before the Attendance Committee, which consists of an attendance clerk, school social worker, school admin-istrator, and Family Resource Center (FRC) coordinator.

The following steps will be taken in order to address any unexcused absences:

• Phone call from the automated system

• Phone call from a member of the Attendance Committee

• Referral made to the FRC coordinator

• Letter sent home to notify parents/guardians of student’s truant status

• Possible home visit

• Referral made to Pupil Personnel

• Referral to Child Protective Services (CPS) for truancy

If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s absences, call the school at 485-8285 and ask for the atten-dance clerk or contact Mr. Mays at 313-4489.

Arrival and DismissalStudents should arrive at school between 8:30 and 9 a.m. Students will have the opportunity to eat breakfast in the cafeteria each morning and then move into a supervised area in the gym until they are released to their classrooms.

• Car riders are dropped off at the gym door from the carpool line. Parents/Guardians enter the carpool line from Muhammad Ali Boulevard.

• Walkers enter the building by going through the fenced-in playground area that is located on the side of the school. Students will enter the school through the gym door/carpool line door.

• Parents entering the building with their child should park past the school on Vermont Avenue or in the visitors’ parking spots on the side of the building. Please do not park on the street in front of the building during arrival and dismissal times. All parents are required to sign in at the main office and wear a visitor’s pass while in the building.

• Students will be dismissed to their designated transportation at 3:45 p.m. If there is a change in transportation, please send a note to school with your child, or if you make changes over the phone, please call the school prior to 3 p.m. or else changes cannot be granted.

• Please be aware that on the front door there is a sign stating, “Due to dismissal, the front doors will not be open between 3:30 and 4 p.m. to ensure the safety of all students.” Parents wishing to pick up students early will have to do so before 3:30 p.m.

Bus ProceduresOur primary goal is to ensure safe travel for all students who ride the bus. Students are expected to load, unload, and travel following the expectations of King Elementary and the bus driver. Students are expected to stay seated and refrain from distracting behaviors while on the bus. Failure to follow bus rider expectations will result in the driver completing a bus referral. When this occurs, a member from the bus safety team will discuss the violation with the student and a copy of the referral will be sent home by the student as well as through the mail for parental viewing. In the event of multiple occurrences, consequences will reflect a progression of disciplinary actions, which could result in multiple days of suspension from the bus and, eventually, the student losing his or her bus rights.

Bus Behavior Expectations

BBe Responsible

UUse Respect

SStay Safe

Be on your best behavior. Listen to your driver. Stay seated at all times.

Follow the driver’s instructions. Use Voice Level 1. Keep your head, hands, and feet inside the bus.

No food or drinks are allowed. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

Do not district the driver.

Keep the bus clean. Use appropriate language. Watch for the driver’s signal before crossing the street.

Bus Referral ProgressionFirst Referral: Conference with student and phone call home

Second Referral: Conference with student, phone call home, and constructive assignment

Third Referral: In-school consequence

Fourth Referral: Suspension from the bus, which will range from one to five days, and student will attend one bus safety class during his or her special area.

Fifth Referral: Suspension from the bus, ranging from five to ten days and a parent bus meeting. Student will not be able to ride the bus until a parent meeting has been scheduled.

Riding the bus is a privilege offered to every Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) student. Please note that at any time, your child could be suspended from the bus due to creating an unsafe environment on the bus and the severity of his or her behavior.

King Elementary Bus Incentive Program

To help decrease the number of bus referrals and to promote positive behaviors on the bus, a bus incentive program has been created. Students are given one ticket per ride after meeting proper bus expectations. Students are

responsible for keeping up with the tickets that they have earned. Students may cash in their tickets on Mondays with Mr. Jarrell and choose from a variety of prizes. Each prize is worth a specific number of tickets. Students may choose

to keep their tickets to collect a bigger prize.

5 tickets = Wild Card (surprise reward)

10 tickets = Read the Pledge of Allegiance on the announcements

15 tickets = Greeter in the morning

25 tickets = Chromebook usage for 15 minutes

30 tickets = Lunch with a friend or staff member

50 tickets = Popcorn party with three friends

60 tickets = School helper for two days during a specified time

Car RidersCar riders will report to the gym following dismissal and wait for their car rider number to be called. Parents should display their school-assigned placard with the car rider number on it. A staff member will escort students to the appropriate cars. Car riders should be picked up before 4 p.m. Students whose parents have not arrived by then will be moved to the main office, and parents will have to come inside the school, show identification, and sign out their child. If a student accumulates more than three late pickups, the parents will be required to meet with an adminis-trator in order to discuss other means of after-school transportation.

WalkersWalkers will be dismissed from the gym door and walk through the fenced-in playground area on the side of the school. Parents should meet students in the playground area. Students should not cross Vermont Avenue without a parent. Parents will be required to show identification. If you are picking up your child by car, please use the carpool line from Muhammad Ali Boulevard. Our goal is to keep your child safe.

Kindergarten Bus RidersTo ensure that our youngest bus riders are safe once they arrive at their bus stop, it is required that someone 18 years or older is at the bus stop to get them off the bus. If no one is there, the bus driver will not allow the student to get off the bus. The bus compound director will contact you, and the bus driver will make another attempt to meet someone at the bus stop. It is important that you arrive at the bus stop at least 10 minutes earlier then the scheduled bus time in case the driver arrives earlier.

Other School ExpectationsBirthday TreatsBirthday treats are welcomed but must be purchased from a store and individually wrapped. A new policy requires that treats reflect healthier choices, such as 100-calorie snacks, fruit packs, and vegetable snacks. Party favors, balloons, flowers, or other deliveries will not be delivered to students. If you want to bring treats to celebrate a birthday, please prearrange this with your child’s teacher and make arrangements to share the treats during your child’s lunch time. Students will not be able to carry extra treats or party favors on the bus, since that could cause a distraction for the bus driver and other students on the bus.

Cell Phones and Electronic DevicesStudents should not have cellphones or electronic devices activated or visible during the school day. If devices are visible, they will be confiscated and only returned to a parent/guardian. Additionally, King Elementary will not be responsible for loss, theft, or damage to devices brought onto school property.

Daily CommunicationAll students will receive an Agenda for daily communication between teachers and families. If agendas are lost, students may purchase a new one for $5 in the office. Every Monday, students will bring home a folder that also serves as a tool of the school staff communicating with our fami-lies. Please be on the lookout for both.

This year, we are implementing ClassDojo schoolwide. ClassDojo is a classroom communication app that is used to provide real-time feedback to students as well as parents. Please download the app on your phone or a device you use often.

Breakfast and LunchEvery student at King Elementary receives a free nutritious breakfast and lunch each day. Students will eat breakfast in the cafeteria every morning between 8 and 9 a.m. As soon as students arrive at school, they are to go straight into the cafeteria to get their breakfast and eat. After eating their breakfast, they will be escorted to the gym. Lunch times are assigned to every classroom between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. If you would like to eat lunch with your child, please check with the office or your child’s teacher to see specifically when your child eats lunch.

Open food containers are not permitted outside the cafeteria. Students bringing their lunch from home may purchase milk. Students are not permitted to bring soda/soft drinks to school with their lunches or to bring food purchased at a restaurant (including fast-food restaurants). Parents are welcome to have lunch with their child but may not bring in food purchased at a restaurant (including fast-food restaurants) into the lunchroom. We will have a designated area for you and your child to enjoy lunch together. Please remember that the time after lunch is not for conferencing or visiting with teachers.

Behavioral ExpectationsOur vision at King is for all students to demonstrate academic proficiency, develop individual talents, and display leadership throughout our school and community. Schoolwide, we use a behavior framework called Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), which allows all students to be taught the appropriate learning and behavior expectations for every lesson and transition of the day. PBIS also allows the school to build common expectations within the common areas of the school building as well as within each classroom. We are all working together as a school to create a system where student success is our main focus. That means both academically and behaviorally.

Since 2013, the PBIS Team has worked diligently to devise a universal Tier I system of supports for all students at King Elementary. These supports include clearly defining behavioral expectations, teaching these expectations to students, acknowledging appropriate behavior, and correcting inappropriate behavior. The PBIS Team is made up of teachers and administrators who meet regularly to analyze behavioral data to determine which areas or behaviors may require additional support and teaching.

The ultimate goal of PBIS is to increase student academic performance, decrease problem behavior, increase safety, and establish positive school climate through research-based strategies and systems.

What Is PBIS?PBIS is a proactive, team-based framework for creating and sustaining safe and effective schools. It is based on a system of tools and strategies for defining, teaching, acknowledging appropriate behavior, and correcting inappro-priate behavior. Emphasis is placed on prevention of problem behavior and the development of pro-social skills. An important aspect of PBIS is the understanding that appropriate behavior and social competence are skills that require direct teaching to students, just like reading and math.

There are four main elements of an effective schoolwide PBIS system:

• Clearly defining and teaching a set of behavioral expectations

• Consistently acknowledging and rewarding appropriate behavior

• Constructively addressing problematic behavior

• Effectively using behavioral data to assess progress

ClassDojoThis year, we are moving to a schoolwide usage of ClassDojo. Dojo points will be linked to our guidelines for success. Guidelines for success traits represent a set of skills and attitudes that everyone in the school should always strive to demonstrate. At King, our guidelines are ROARS.

R Respect (using kind words and actions)

O Ownership (taking responsibility for your work, actions, and learning opportunities)

A Attitude (maintaining a positive and respectful outlook)

R Responsibility (starting and completing all work and assignments, cleaning up after yourself, representing yourself and what our school stands for)

S Safety (maintaining a safe environment at all times)

Backpack of Success SkillsStudents can also earn points by completing projects or class work that represents our districtwide Digital Back-pack of Success Skills. Projects can also be completed within the community, and evidence of the project can be uploaded on student’s Google drive, which becomes part of his or her Digital Backpack.

• Prepared and Resilient Learner

• Globally and Culturally Competent Citizen

• Effective Communicator

• Emerging Innovator

• Productive Collaborator

While students will have many opportunities to earn points throughout the day, they can also lose points for the following offenses:

• Leaving the classroom without permission

• Refusing to follow directions

• Fighting

• Vulgar/Inappropriate language

• Destroying school property/Throwing of furniture

• Horse playing

You will be able to keep up with your child’s behavior throughout the day and stay in communication with your child’s teacher by downloading the ClassDojo app on your phone or electronic device.

King’s Guidelines for Success• Guidelines for Success includes brief statements or phrases that describe

skills, traits, and attitudes that students need to be successful in school and in life.

• Guidelines for Success represents a set of skills, traits, and attitudes that everyone in the school always strives to demonstrate. At King, hear our “ROARS.”

• Every month, students have the opportunity to be recognized in any of the five Guidelines for Success in which they have shown outstanding leadership. Students are recognized monthly, during our schoolwide morning meeting.

Voice LevelsUniform voice levels are taught to create common expectations in common areas throughout the building. Students need to know, during every minute of the school day, what’s the appropriate voice level. All staff members will teach, model, and remind students of the four voice levels:

Level Sounds Like

3 Speaker’s Voice

2 Conversation

1 Whispering

0 Silence

Schoolwide signal for students to go to Voice Level 0 and focus on the speaker—“Give Me Five”All staff members will teach and use the schoolwide signal of “Give Me Five.” The signal consists of displaying a raised hand with all five fingers visible to students. Students will stop working/talking, show the signal themselves, look at the adult, and listen.

Our school uses the behavior matrix on the next page, which includes King’s Guidelines for Success as well as appropriate voice level expectations. The matrix will be used to teach and hold all students responsible for devel-oping into the leaders we are striving for them to become.

Behavior MatrixA schoolwide behavior matrix shows the various school settings along the top with the behavior expectations in the left column. Each matrix box contains the behavior indicators or what the behavior expectations look like in that particular setting. The matrix establishes a common language for staff and students and provides clarification on the concepts of each behavior expectation.

Nonnegotiable BehaviorsIn order to keep our focus on student growth, we have identified six nonnegotiable behaviors. If a student is engaged in any of the behaviors listed below, he or she will automatically be assigned a consequence.

• Throwing any type of item

• Putting hands, feet, or any part of body on someone else

• Profanity

• Bullying of any type

• Destroying school items

• Horseplaying with peers either verbally or physically

Consequences for Each Infraction of Nonnegotiable BehaviorFirst Occurrence: The student will receive a phone call home and assigned school detention either the day of or the following day.

Second Occurrence: The student will receive a phone call home and be assigned school detention either the day of or the following day, and a parent meeting will be conducted.

Third Occurrence: The student will be assigned to the In-School Adjustment Program (ISAP) for the remainder of that day and two additional days if in kindergarten through grade two and three additional days if in grades three through five. A parent meeting will be conducted.

Fourth Occurrence and Beyond: The student will receive ISAP for the remainder of that day and three additional days if in kindergarten through grade two and five additional days if in grades three through five. A parent meeting will be conducted.

Field TripsA field trip is an educational activity that is an extension of classroom instruction and is conducted away from school. We want all of our students to participate in the learning experience provided by field trips. For a student to partic-ipate, a parent/caregiver must sign and return the Field Trip Permission Form. If this is not signed and returned by the designated date, your child will not be able to attend the field trip. For liability reasons, we are unable to accept telephone confirmations or handwritten notes.

If a student’s behavior is inappropriate and poses a safety risk for himself or herself or for others, the student may be excluded from participating in a field trip unless the parent/caregiver attends with him or her. If a student is to be excluded, the principal will review the exclusion notification that the parent/caregiver was given prior to the field trip.

Medication/Medical NeedsAny student requiring medication during the school day must have a signed Authorization to Administer Medication Form on file in the office. Permission may not be given over the telephone to administer medication. Medication must be brought to school in its original container. Any medication not in its original container is not given to the student. All medication is maintained in a secure location, and only designated office staff are allowed to administer medication. Please inform the office of any of your child’s medical needs or allergies that require special atten-tion. Please also indicate this information on the student’s Enrollment Form.

Should your child become ill or have an accident during school hours, facilities are available for first aid and tempo-rary care until the parents can be contacted. Be sure that the office always has an updated Enrollment Form on file with the current home address, telephone numbers, emergency telephone numbers, and current work numbers for parents. These are very important if your child becomes ill during the school day. If at any time you need to update any of your contact information, please call the school and provide the office staff with your new information.

Noncustodial ParentAll noncustodial parents have the right to review their child’s records, to request conferences with their child’s teacher, and to pick up or visit their child while in school. The only exception to this is when a signed court order states differently. Official custody papers must be on file in the office when these parental rights have been revoked by the court system; otherwise, all noncustodial parents will have these parental rights.

Parental InvolvementAt King, we encourage parental involvement and welcome you to be part of our school through one or all of the following activities:

• Classroom Visitation: Please arrange classroom visits with your child’s teacher or by contacting the office.

• Conferences With Teachers: Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to call the school office at 485-8285 or to send a note to schedule conferences with their child’s teacher. Teachers are not free for conferences at times when they are responsible for instructing students. We will not interrupt teachers during class, but we will take a message to have the teacher return your call after school or during his or her planning time to schedule a confer-ence. In addition, two days during the school year have been designated by the JCPS District for parent-teacher conferences (Oct. 8 and Feb. 17).

• Volunteers: Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to serve on committees, to help in classrooms, and to assist with programs and extracurricular activities. State law now requires a background check for every person who volunteers within our school. This is a very simple process that can be taken care of at the school with no cost to the volunteers. The JCPS District forms are available in the office or on the “Parent” page of the JCPS website for those parents/guardians who are interested in chaperoning field trips, helping in classrooms, and assisting with school programs. Please contact the office for information regarding volunteering.

• School-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Council: The SBDM Council creates policies to enhance the achievement of all students of the school. The membership of the SBDM Council consists of two parents, three teachers, and the principal. SBDM members meet once a month to review and discuss school policies.

• Parent Teacher Association (PTA): Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to participate in our school’s PTA. The cooperative effort between the staff and the PTA provides many programs and activities that directly benefit the students. All parents are highly encouraged to actively participate in the PTA. King’s PTA is associated with the 15th District, State, and National PTAs. You may join the PTA during the fall membership drive or at any time during the school year.

• Parent Support Group: This is an opportunity for parents within our learning community to come together monthly to build relationships with one another and voice their concerns as well as solutions for improving our school.

Dress CodeKing students do not wear uniforms; however, there are expectations for appropriate dress within our school building, and the expectations will be enforced. If students are seen wearing any type of clothing that is not accepted by the school dress code, parents will be contacted to bring appropriate clothes for their child.

• Students must wear shirts with sleeves. No tank tops, halter tops, or crop shirts are permitted. “RIP” shirts and those with inappropriate sayings will not be allowed.

• Hoodies are not allowed.

• Students will not be allowed to tie shirts in the front or back to create crop tops or show their midriff.

• Shorts and skirts must be no shorter than two inches above the knee.

• Students are not permitted to wear flip-flop shoes. Students must wear closed-toe shoes.

• Please do not allow your child to wear rubber band bracelets, necklaces, or any jewelry that may be distracting.

• Hats, scarves, bandannas, and hair rollers may not be worn during the school day. The only exception is if the school is hosting a Hat Day as part of a school celebration or incentive.

• Tutus are not allowed to be worn by students.
