Bible Point

Bible Basisn Jesus changes water into wine.

In the culture of Jesus’ day, weddings were very different from those of today. We don’t know exactly what they were like, but they often involved a happy celebration lasting over a week! The groom’s father paid the bill, and he was expected to provide appropriate refreshments for as long as the party continued. Thus, it was a huge faux pas to run out of wine! That helps to explain at least some of Mary’s concern.

The problem that arose between Jesus and Mary was because she knew who he was, but he didn’t really want that known yet. As far as we know, Jesus hadn’t performed any miracles yet. He knew that soon enough events would begin progressing toward the time of his death—the time for which he had come to earth. The term he used in addressing Mary was not rude, but instead showed his admiration for her. Notice that even though he indicated that it wasn’t time for him to reveal himself, she told the servants to do what he said. Mary knew what Jesus was capable of and wanted him to act.

The accepted procedure of serving the best wine first, then bringing out the cheaper wine after the partakers’ taste buds had been a bit numbed, shouldn’t surprise us—it only makes sense from a host’s point of view. It also shouldn’t surprise anyone that the wine Jesus created from water was the best wine in the world—after all, he is the Creator!

Prayer• Read John 7:1-9.• What light does this verse shed on today’s passage?• How do you lean on your own sense of purpose to determine what you do or don’t do?• Pray: Dear God, help me to sort out my priorities and focus on what you want me to do as I…

Welcome TimeSUPPLIES: “Perfect Present Name Tags” (p. 22), markers, safety pins or tape• Bend down and make eye contact with children as they arrive.• Greet each child individually with an enthusiastic smile.• Thank each child for coming to class today.• As children arrive, ask them how they applied last week’s lesson. Use questions such

as, “Did you give a gift to Jesus last week?” and “What gifts did the wise men bring?”• Say: Today we’re going to learn that Jesus can do anything. He gives us

what we need.• Hand out the present name tags children made in Lesson 1, and help children attach

name tags to their clothing. If name tags were damaged or if children weren’t in class that week, have children make new name tags using the photocopiable patterns.

• Direct children to the Let’s Get Started activities you’ve set up.

Let’s Get StartedSet up one or more of the following activities for children to do as they arrive. After

you greet each child, invite him or her to choose an activity.Circulate among the children to offer help as needed and to direct their

conversation toward today’s lesson. Ask questions such as “What are some things Jesus does to help you?” or “How do you feel when you have a big problem?”

n Option 1: Glad GlassesSUPPLIES: paper cups, crayons or permanent markers

Set out paper cups and crayons or permanent markers. Let children use the markers to decorate their cups, showing pictures of what Jesus can do. As the children are drawing, ask questions such as “Have you ever had a problem that looked too big to solve?” and “What are some things you’re glad Jesus can do?” Remind them that

Jesus can do anything. Tell children they’re going to hear a Bible story about some amazing things Jesus did to help people and how glad those people were.

Be sure children make enough glad glasses for each child to have one to use later in the lesson. When children have finished, set the cups aside.

n Option 2: Party BalloonsSUPPLIES: balloons, tape, crepe paper streamers

Before children arrive, inflate and tie the balloons. Set out balloons, tape, and crepe paper streamers. Let children make party balloons by taping colorful streamers to the balloons. Join in the decorating, and make comments such as “It’s helpful to ask for what you need” and “Thanks for helping when I ask.” Remind children that Jesus can do anything and that he always helps us when we ask him.

If you don’t choose Option 1, be sure to bring paper cups for children to use during “Do the Bible Story.”

Remind children that permanent marker does not come out of clothing. Carefully supervise the use of the markers.

WARNING:CHOKING HAZARD— Be sure to pick up pieces of any broken balloons and dispose of them immediately. Balloons may contain latex.

n Option 3: Gift LaunchSUPPLIES: masking tape, transparent tape, index cards

Before this activity, tape an index card to one end of each chopstick to make several “launchers.”

Use masking tape to make a 3-foot circle on the floor. Have children gather about 10 feet from the circle. Explain that people often bring gifts to a party, but in this game the presents will “arrive” in a silly way. Give one child a gift box and a launcher. Demonstrate how to set the box on the card

while holding the opposite end of the chopstick. Pull the card back, and “launch” the gift box toward the circle. As children take turns “sending” their gifts, explain that today they’ll hear about a time when Jesus went to a party and provided an extra-special gift.

After everyone has arrived and you’re ready to move on to the Bible Story Time, encourage the children to finish what they’re doing and get ready to clean up.

n Pick Up Our ToysSUPPLIES: CD player

Lead children in singing “Pick Up Our Toys” (track 2) with the CD to the tune of “Skip to My Lou.” Encourage children to sing along as they help clean up the room.

If you want to include the names of all the children in the class, sing the song without the CD, and repeat the naming section. If you

choose to use the CD, vary the names you use each week.

We will pick up our toys.We will pick up our toys.We will pick up our toys,And put them all away.

Bible Story Timen Setting the StageSUPPLIES: toothpicks, grapes, small marshmallows, paper towels or napkins, baby wipes

Tell the children you’ll clap your hands to get their attention. Explain that when you clap, the children are to stop what they’re doing, raise their hands, and focus on you. Encourage children to respond quickly so you’ll have time for all the fun activities you’ve planned.

Have children clean their hands with baby wipes or at a nearby sink. Gather children around a table, and hand each child a napkin or paper towel. Say: Today we’ll hear a story about a wedding party where there was lots of food for feasting. But first, let’s make some delicious party treats of our own

There’s [name] picking up toys. There’s [name] picking up toys. There’s [name] picking up toys,Putting them all away.

to eat. I’ll hand each of you the things you’ll need to make two party picks. To make a party pick, slide one grape on a toothpick, add a small marshmallow, then another grape. Make a party pick to show children what a finished one looks like. Save this sample party pick to give Pockets in the Closing activity. Hand each child four grapes and two toothpicks but only one marshmallow.

As children begin to ask for their second marshmallow, say: We have a problem. It seems we ran out of something we need.

Ask: • What can we do when we need help? (We can ask for help; we could borrow from a friend.)

Say: Let’s go around the table and, one by one, each of you may ask for what you need.

When children ask for a second marshmallow, give each child an additional one. After children have completed two party picks, say: Let’s all clean up the table and then each find a friend to eat our party picks with.

As children eat, ask:• Who can tell about a time when you needed help and asked for it? (I

needed help making a snack at home; I ran out of art supplies at school; I needed to borrow a pencil.)

• How does it feel to ask for help? (I feel silly or embarrassed; OK; glad to find someone who can help me.)

• Why is it important to ask for help when we need help? (It lets us learn from others; otherwise I couldn’t do it.)

• Who do you think can always help us no matter what our trouble is? (God; Jesus; my mom or dad.)

Say: We all need help sometimes, and it’s good to ask for help. It’s important to know there’s one person who can always help us. Jesus can do anything. He can help us any time we need help. In our Bible story today, we’re going to learn how Jesus helped at a party.

n Bible Song and Prayer TimeSUPPLIES: Bible, construction paper, scissors, CD player, basket or box

Before class, make surprise cards for this activity by cutting construction paper into 2x6-inch slips. Prepare a surprise card for each child, plus a few extras for visitors. Fold the cards in half, and stamp the boat stamp inside one of the surprise cards. Bookmark John 2:1-11 in the Bible you’ll be using.

Have children sit in a circle. Say: Each week when we come to our circle for our Bible story, I’ll choose someone to be the Bible person. The Bible person will bring me the Bible marked with our Bible story for that week. Each of you will get a chance to be the Bible person. Before I choose today’s Bible person, let’s sing our Bible song. As we sing, I’ll hand out surprise cards. Don’t look inside your surprise card until the song is over.

Lead children in singing “Read God’s Book” (track 3) with the CD to the tune of “The Muffin Man.” As you sing, hand out the folded surprise cards.

If the ink pad is dry, moisten it with three to five drops of water.

Now it’s time to read God’s book,Read God’s book, read God’s book.Now it’s time to read God’s book.Let’s hear a Bible story.(Repeat 3x.)

After the song, say: You may look inside your surprise cards. The person who has the boat stamped inside his or her card will be our Bible person for today.

Identify the Bible person. Ask the Bible person to bring you the Bible. Lead the class in clapping for the Bible person, cheering, and making fun applause sound effects by slapping your thighs with your palms. Help the Bible person open the Bible to the marked place, and show children where your story comes from. Then have the Bible person sit down.

Say: [Name] was our special Bible person today. Each week, we’ll have only one special Bible person, but each one of you is a special part of our class! Today we’re all learning that Jesus can do anything.

Let’s say a special prayer now and ask God to help us learn that Jesus can always help. I’ll pass around this basket. When the basket comes to you, put your surprise card in it and say, “God, please help me trust Jesus.”

Have a helper pass around the basket or box. After your helper has collected everyone’s surprise card, set the basket aside, and pick up the Bible. Lead children in this prayer: God, thank you for the Bible and for all the stories in it. Teach us today that Jesus can do anything. In Jesus’ name, amen.

n Hear and Tell the Bible StorySUPPLIES: Bible, plastic pitcher

Bring out the Bible Big Book: Jesus’ Miracles and a plastic pitcher. Have children gather around you in a circle on the floor, and show them your Bible, open to the book of John. Say: Our Bible story this week comes from the book of John. Our Bible Big Book shows pictures of our Bible story.

Ask: • Who can share about a time they had a party or went to a party? Allow a few children to share their experiences.

Hold up the pitcher. Say: This is a pitcher you might use at a party to serve juice or something else good to drink. Parties are lots of fun, but how would you feel if you ran out of juice to serve your friends? What would you do? (I’d feel upset; I’d be embarrassed; I’d ask my mom or dad to get more; I’d go to the store.)

Empty pitchers aren’t much fun at a party! Our story today is about a party, an empty pitcher, and someone who helped in an amazing way.

Open the Bible Big Book to page 1. Fold back the book so page 1 is the only page children see.

Ask: • What do you see happening in this picture? Allow children to share their ideas about what’s happening in the story picture on page 1.

Then say: You can help tell the story. We’ll pass the empty pitcher around the circle while I read the Bible story. This Bible account is about Jesus and his mother, Mary. If I say the name Mary, the person holding the pitcher jumps up and says, “It’s all gone!” If I say the name Jesus, the person with the pitcher jumps up and says, “Jesus can help!” Continue to pass the pitcher around the circle until I have finished reading the story.

Practice saying Mary and Jesus a few times with all the children, so they’re clear on their parts in the story. Then hold the Bible Big Book open to page 1 as you read the following story and pass the pitcher.

Say: Jesus did many wonderful and amazing miracles to show God’s power. Let’s learn about some of Jesus’ wonderful miracles. You’ll see that it’s true: Jesus can do anything!

Jesus, Mary, and the disciples were at a wedding party in the town of Cana. There were hungry, thirsty people at the party. Soon Mary noticed a big problem, and she ran to find Jesus. Mary knew that Jesus could help.

“Jesus, can you help us?” asked Mary. “They’ve run out of wine to drink.”

“Fill six jugs with water,” Jesus said to the servants. The servants did as Jesus said. “Now, pour the water into a cup,”

said Jesus. The servants poured water into a cup, and what do you think happened? Pause for the children to give their ideas. Then finish the story. Wine came pouring out! Jesus had turned the water into wine! Everyone was amazed at the miracle. But Mary knew that Jesus can do anything!

Close the Bible Big Book and ask:• What happened at the party that was a big problem? (They ran out of

things to drink; the pitchers were empty.)• Why do you think Mary asked Jesus for help? (She knew that Jesus could

help; she knew that Jesus can do anything.)• Why do you think Jesus helped Mary? (Because Jesus loved his mother;

because Jesus answers when we ask him for help.)• Is Mary the only one Jesus helped in this story? Who else did he help?

(He helped the guests so they wouldn’t be thirsty; Jesus helped teach the disciples that he can do anything.)

• How does this story help us learn what to do when we have problems? (It teaches us to ask Jesus for help; it shows us that Jesus can do anything.)

Say: No problem is too big or too small for Jesus. It’s important to know that Jesus can do anything. When Jesus turned the water into wine, it was called a miracle. It was a miracle because only Jesus can do something this wonderful and amazing. These things are impossible for us, but the Bible says “With God everything is possible.” That’s the Bible verse we’re learning, and it’s from Matthew 19:26. Show children the verse in the Bible.

Ask: • Why is it important to know that “with God everything is possible”? (It gives me hope; it lets me know that God is powerful.)

• What did Jesus show through his miracles? (God’s great power; that he can do anything.)

Say: People can’t do miracles, but Jesus can! In fact, Jesus can do anything!

n Do the Bible StorySUPPLIES: 4 large bowls, package of presweetened lemonade mix, water, small paper cups, plastic pitcher, spoons, baby wipes, cups from Option 1

Before this activity, fill four large bowls with water, and place them where children can easily gather around them and reach them. Pour a package of presweetened lemonade mix into a plastic pitcher, and set the pitcher two feet away from the water bowls.

Have children clean their hands with baby wipes or at a nearby sink.Say: Let’s have a “Water Into Wine” race and see how quickly we can

fill the pitcher with water. It’ll be fun and will help us remember the Bible story and that Jesus can do anything! We’ll work together as one team to help fill the pitcher. Here’s a small paper cup and a spoon for each of you. You will spoon up water into your cup. Then carefully empty your cup into the pitcher. Be sure each child has a plastic spoon and a cup.

As children work together to fill the plastic pitcher with water, cheer them on with comments such as “Way to go! You’re really working well together!” and “What a team of helpers we have in this class!”

When the pitcher is full, clap your hands to get children’s attention. Say: Set your paper cups on the table. Then sit in a circle on the floor.

Ask: • How was this activity like the Bible story? (Water was brought in pitchers; we helped each other as Jesus helped at the wedding.)

• What happens when we help each other? (We get a lot done; we feel good about helping.)

Say: Jesus can do anything. He helps us when we ask because he loves us. Jesus wants us to know we can help each other, too. This activity made me thirsty. How about having a drink of the water you helped pour into the pitcher?

Hand out the decorated cups the children made in Option 1. Then pour each child a taste of lemonade.

If you’ve been able to keep the secret that there’s lemonade in the pitcher, be ready for some surprised and happy faces. As children enjoy the lemonade, say: This lemonade is a fun way to help us remember that Jesus can do anything. It also reminds us of how Jesus turned ordinary water into wine to help his friends. Today we’ve learned that we can ask Jesus for help and trust him to help us. No problem is too big for Jesus because Jesus can do anything.

Closingn Party Pout SUPPLIES: party pick from “Setting the Stage”

Have children sit in a circle on the floor. Bring out Pockets the Kangaroo, and go through the following script. After you finish the script, put Pockets away and out of sight. You’ll need the party pick you saved from the “Setting the Stage” activity.

Spread a protective cover on the floor under the pitcher and water bowls for this activity. Keep a plastic tablecloth handy in the classroom for messy art projects and water play such as this.

Before serving the lemonade, be sure there’s enough water in the pitcher to dissolve and dilute the presweetened lemonade mix. Stir the lemonade before serving it to the children.

Say: Jesus can do anything. He can help us with any problem, and he always answers us when we ask him for help. Jesus could turn water into wine; Jesus can do mighty miracles; and Jesus can help you any time and any place. Trusting in Jesus puts a song in our hearts! Let’s learn a new

song to help us remember that Jesus can do anything.Lead the children in singing “Jesus Can Do Anything” (track 8) to the tune of

“Jesus Loves Me” with the CD.

Who can chase my fears away?Who can turn the night to day?Who can calm the stormy sea?Who can grow a mighty tree?

Jesus can do anything.Jesus can do anything.Jesus can do anything. There’s nothing he can’t do!

Pockets: Hi, kids! Say, do you want to see my new trick?

Teacher: Do you have a new trick, Pockets?

Pockets: Sure. Watch this…(Turns a somersault.)

Teacher: That’s very good, Pockets.

Pockets: I can do anything! Watch me do this…(Hops very high.)

Teacher: Pockets…

Pockets: Yep, I can do anything! I can do anything at all! Watch this! (Excitedly hops even higher, but falls and hurts her foot.) Ouch!

Teacher: Oh, Pockets. Are you all right? Here, let me help you up.

Pockets: Oh-h, my foot hurts. I guess I can’t do everything. I guess no one can do everything.

Teacher: No, Pockets, we can’t do everything. But there is someone who can do anything. Children, while Pockets rests, let’s tell her about the only one who can do anything. Pockets, the Bible tells us about how Jesus helped at a wedding party. The children will tell you all about it. (Let children share about Jesus and the Bible story. Encourage them to tell Pockets the Bible Point.)

Pockets: It’s really neat that Jesus can do anything. Next time I need help, I’ll ask Jesus to help me.

Teacher: That’s a smart thing to remember, Pockets. And we’d like to give you something that might help make your foot feel better. (Have a child give Pockets the party pick you made earlier.)

Pockets: Yum, yum. My foot feels better already. Thanks, everyone, and thanks for teaching me that Jesus can do anything!

n Lively Learning: Fill ’Er UpSet six paper cups at one end of the room. Have children get into three groups and line up across the room

from the cups. Hand each group a different color of construction paper. Ask each group to tear its sheet of colored paper into six pieces. Tell children they’re going to fill the six cups with their pieces of paper, just as the servants in the Bible story filled the six water jugs. When you say “go,” have each group run over to the cups and drop one piece of their paper into each of the six cups. Encourage children to cooperate in their groups to be sure they get one piece of colored paper in each of the six cups.

After 30 seconds, clap to signal children to stop. Give two cups to each group, and let them count to make sure there are three pieces of differently colored paper in each cup.

n Make to Take: Filled With JoyBefore this activity, inflate and tie a balloon for

each child.Scatter permanent markers, ribbons, and stickers

on a table. Have each child find a friend to work with, and then hand each child a balloon. Tell partners to draw a heart on one of the balloons and a happy face on the other balloon. Have children use stickers and ribbons to decorate their balloons. After

everyone has finished, say: Because we know that Jesus can do anything, it makes us feel happy when we give our problems to him. Bop your balloons back and forth with your partner while you each tell about something you need Jesus’ help with.

n Treat to Eat: Fill Up the CupHave children clean their hands with baby wipes or at a nearby sink. Give each child

a small paper cup, and have children sit at a table. Place a bowl each of cereal loops, small marshmallows, and chocolate chips on the table. Say: In our Bible story, Jesus told the servants to fill six jugs with water. Each jug held nearly 20 gallons of water. That’s almost a whole bathtub of water! Let’s see how much cereal, marshmallows, and chocolate chips it takes to fill up your cups. Allow time for children to actually count the number of cereal loops, marshmallows, and chocolate chips it takes to fill their cups.

n Story Picture: It’s a Miracle!Give each child a photocopy of the “Today I Learned…” handout. Set out crayons and blue watercolor

paint. (Adding water to blue tempera paint works well, too.) Let children color the water jugs with crayons. Then have children paint over their pictures with the watercolor paint. As they work, ask children about ways Jesus helps them. Remind them that Jesus can do anything.

Verse to Learn“With God everything is possible” (Matthew 19:26b).

Ask Me...l What did Mary do when she saw that there was a

problem at the wedding?

l What’s one thing you can ask Jesus to help with?
