Congratulations on taking flight as a Phoenix! While we wish we could have met you in person for your GB Orientation, we are confident that this summer you will get all of the tools needed to prepare you for a successful start to your UW-Green Bay, Sheboygan Campus experience. Here’s what to expect: Advising and Class Registration This is your important first step and your preparation begins today! On your registered GB Orientation date, you will connect with an Academic Advisor who will walk you through creating your fall class schedule. To help prepare for that day, here are four important things to do:

¨ Know your UW-Green Bay username and password. Your admission packet has your initial username and password that you used to log in to SIS. You will be prompted to change your password, be sure you remember it! You will need it to log in to SIS and register for classes during your advising appointment. If you have any issues with your username and/or password, please call the IT Help Desk at 920-465-2309.

¨ Routinely check your UW-Green Bay email. This is where you receive confirmation about your

registration and advising appointment, a pre-advising survey, as well as important updates throughout the summer. Why else is your UWGB email so important? Check out page 26.

¨ Complete your pre-advising survey. It was in the confirmation email you received regarding your

advising and registration time for your GB Orientation date. ¨ Read through this advising workbook. This book is set up to answer questions that most first-year

students have. You need to make sure you’ve read through this information before your scheduled advising appointment.

Connect with Ambassadors Now that you are registered for classes, we want to introduce you to your fellow students!

¨ Student Panels: We will hold multiple student panels that you can attend from the comfort of your home. Student Ambassadors will share more about their experiences attending UW-Green Bay, Sheboygan Campus and be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Prepare for Arrival This is the time to make those final preparations before starting your fall semester! Throughout the summer, we will provide updates on our website at www.uwgb.edu/gb-orientation/.

¨ Review information on the GB Orientation website about: • Financial Aid • Campus Resources

¨ Connect with your First Year Seminar Faculty

What are Degree Requirements? In order to graduate from UW-GB there are certain requirements that all students need to complete. We’ll go over them briefly here, but this is something you should discuss with an Academic Advisor each semester to ensure that you are taking classes you need. In college, classes are measured in units of academic progress called credits. Each credit is based on about an hour of class time. 1 credit = 1 hour of class per week. Most classes at UW-GB are 3 credits because you will meet in class about three hours per week. Every student needs to complete 60 credits to graduate with an associate’s degree or 120 credits to graduate with a bachelors degree. The majority of students complete five courses for 15 credits each semester if attending full time.

15 credits x 4 semester (two years) = 60 credits 15 credits x 8 semesters (four years) = 120 credits

Within the required 120 credits, there are specific requirements all students need to complete. Satisfying these requirements can differ for each student, so it’s important to check with your advisor to make the best course choices for you.

The components that make up your degree:

In the next few pages of this advising manual, we will go over each degree component and what you will need to take to satisfy each one based on your placement tests, previous college credit, and major/minor(s) in which you have an interest. Bonus Tip: If you have taken AP/IB or have college credit from high school, let you advisor know BEFORE you start planning your class schedule.

Do I need to take a Math Course? Have you satisfied the Math Competency Requirement? In order to graduate, all students must satisfy a certain level of math, called the Math Competency Requirement. The placement chart below will use your ACT Math score to determine at which level you can start. If you scored a 20 or below on the math portion of your ACT test, you will be in Level 1 or 2 and have not satisfied the Math Competency. You will need to enroll in a course to satisfy this requirement within your first 60 UW-GB credits. In which you should enroll depends on your major. Your advisor will help you with this. If you scored a 21 or higher on the math portion of your ACT, you have satisfied the Math Competency requirement for UW-Green Bay. Whether you will need to complete more courses in math will depend on your major. Math Placement Chart

Placement into Level 1 or 2 requires a competency course. Placement into Levels 3-5 means competency has been satisfied. Refer to your major for potential additional courses.

Do you need more math after satisfying the Math Competency Requirement? This depends mostly on your major. Some majors, like those in Science, Math, and Engineering require quite a bit of math, while other majors like English, Music, Philosophy, and others don’t require any math beyond the required competency level. If you are undecided about a major, it may be a good idea to wait to take any math until you have a better idea of what you’d like to study. Keep in mind that if you are transferring to a university outside the UW-Green Bay family, your new college may have different math requirements than UW-GB. Be sure to contact the institution you are transferring to, before enrolling in additional math courses. Bonus Tip: There is a General Education requirement called Quantitative Literacy (QL) that may overlap with your Math Competency Requirement. It is possible to satisfy the Math Competency, Quantitative Literacy (QL), and a Major/Minor requirement with one math course; check with your advisor on this!

Math Course Sequence by Major How to use the chart below:

1. In the far left column, find the major in which you are interested. 2. Along the top row, find your Math Placement Level (Levels are based on your ACT Math score, see chart

on page 4). 3. Find the appropriate starting course based on the intersection of the Major & Math Level. You will then

work your way to the right in the chart to complete all the required courses for your major. Majors denoted with * may require additional math courses not indicated on this chart. Consult your advisor for more details. Shaded boxes indicate one or more courses in the box satisfy the Quantitative Literacy (QL) General Education requirement. Examples: • Joe is planning on an Art major and has a Level 2 placement. He will need to enroll in Math 100,

which will satisfy both his Math Competency and Quantitative Literacy (QL) Gen Ed. • Alexis is planning on a Biology major, and has a Level 3 placement. She will need to first enroll in

Math 101, followed by Math 104, and will also need to take Math 260. Math 260 will satisfy her QL requirement.

Do I need to take a Writing Course? In order to graduate, all students must satisfy the University Writing Competency Requirement, which can be satisfied by the completion of Writing Foundations (WF) 100 or by testing out of the requirement with an ACT English or SAT Reading score as outlined on the chart below.

ACT Scores

SAT Scores Placement

0-24 0-31 WF 100 Writing Foundations; must be completed by the end of the second semester

25-31 32-38 Score satisfies the University Writing Competency Requirement. Eligible to enroll in WF-105. This course may be required for major/minor. Consult advisor.

32 or higher

39 or higher

Score satisfies the University Writing Competency Requirement. Eligible to enroll in WF-105. The WF 105 requirement will be waived for the following programs: ACTG, BUS ADM, ENGL, HUB, and SOCWORK. Consult advisor regarding other majors/minors.

Do you need additional writing courses after satisfying the Writing Competency Requirement?

Writing Emphasis Requirement

The Writing Emphasis (WE) requirement is a distinct requirement that provides students with the opportunity to practice and strengthen writing skills. Students must complete two WE courses for the associate degree or four WE courses for the bachelor degree. WE courses may simultaneously fulfill other degree requirements, i.e. General Education, major, minor, etc.

Bonus Tip: Some majors at UW-GB may require WF 105. Likewise, if you plan to transfer to another university outside the UW-GB family, your new college may have different writing requirements. Be sure to contact the institution you are transferring to, before enrolling in additional writing courses.

What are Gen Eds and why do I need them? General Education courses are those courses that provide an interdisciplinary, problem-focused educational experience that prepares students to think critically and address complex issues in a multicultural and evolving world.

General Education Requirements

First Year Seminar (FYS) REQUIRED IN YOUR FIRST YEAR 3

Fine Arts (FIN) 3

Social Sciences (SOC) 6

Humanities (HUM) 6

Biological Sciences (BIO) 3

Natural Sciences (NAT) 3-5

Sustainability Perspective (SUSP) 3-4

Ethnic Studies Perspective (ETP) 3

Global Culture (GC) 3

Quantitative Literacy (QL) 3-7

Total Credits 36-43

Why do I need them? If you’re coming in with a plan for what you want to study, you might be wondering, “Why can’t I just take classes in my major?”

Some of these classes will actually meet requirements in your major, but the world is constantly changing – even the job you’re working toward will look very different by the time you graduate. Your general education courses will equip you with the perspectives and skills to respond to changes in your community and in your chosen profession. You’ll be ready to be a leader in your community and an innovator in your profession!

Maybe you’re thinking, “I don’t know what I want to major in. Will these classes help me make a decision?”

Yes! Your general education classes will give you an introduction to possible majors, so you’ll get a better sense of what you want to take a closer look at, and you’ll ultimately be able to make an informed decision.

What are some of the rules? • They must be completed before you can graduate • You cannot use one course to meet multiple general education requirements • Courses within General Education may also satisfy requirements within a major and minor • Courses within General Education may also satisfy the Writing Emphasis requirement

How do I know which Gen Ed courses to enroll in each semester?

As a UWGB student, you will become very comfortable using the Student Information System (SIS). See page 21 for more information and a degree audit tool that will show you which Gen Ed categories you have completed and which ones you still need to satisfy. You may also have required major courses that can “double-dip” and satisfy a Gen Ed requirement. Your advisor will help you figure out which requirements you still need to fulfill and if there are any major courses that will work to fulfill these requirements. Gen Ed courses offered each semester can vary. Most of the time, the choice is yours; you have the opportunity to select the course in each category that you will find the most interesting! Bonus Tip: Often times, AP/IB or college credit you earned in high school can satisfy Gen Ed requirements. Let your advisor know if you have any of these credits. Extra Bonus Tip: Although we always use SIS to officially track your progress of Gen Ed courses, many UW-GB students appreciate a good, old-fashioned paper worksheet! Your advisor can fill this out with you during an advising appointment. Or better yet, when you get comfortable using the tools in SIS, you can fill it out on your own and then bring it in to review with your advisor during your advising appointment. An example of the Associate of Arts and Science’s worksheet follows on the next page.

What courses should I take for my major? One tool you will want to use – often – is the Undergraduate Catalog, which you can find online at http://catalog.uwgb.edu/undergraduate/. In the catalog, you will be able to look up each major, the classes required to complete it, and the descriptions of these courses. It looks like this:

Bonus Tip: In this manual, on pages 27-41, there are suggested first-year courses for each major. This makes it easy to get started in selecting your courses. Extra Bonus Tip: If you are undecided on a major, don’t panic – many students are, and many students will change their major from their initial plan – possibly more than once! You can start by taking some General Education courses, and don’t be afraid to take a course just to learn more about it!

What is an elective? Think of these as your “Free Choice” courses. If the credits you need to take to complete your degree/major, equal 60 or 120 - you get to take elective courses! Each student’s number of electives will vary based on how many credits remain to get to 60 or 120 credits.

Is there a Foreign Language requirement? Although UW-Green Bay does not specifically require you to complete credit in foreign language in order to graduate, you should be aware of the opportunity to continue with a language you have experience in or to start a new language. What does UW-Green Bay offer? Our Modern Languages department offers courses in French, German and Spanish. If you’d like to further your study in any of these languages, consider a minor in French, and either a major or minor in German or Spanish. What if I’ve already studied a language in High School? Great! This will give you the opportunity to earn retroactive credit. What is Retroactive Credit? You can earn UW-GB degree credits for high school foreign language knowledge, up to a maximum of 14 credits. These credits are called retroactive credits. THESE ARE FREE COLLEGE CREDITS!! How does it happen? You must enroll in a class at UW-Green Bay at the 102 level or higher to earn retroactive credit, and earn a “B” grade or better.* (Refer to chart below for exact number of credits/courses that can be earned). How do the credits apply to my degree? The credits count towards graduation. Language courses completed at the 102, 202, or 225 level will fulfill the Global Culture requirement. Do retroactive credits affect my grade point average? No. Retroactive course credits do not have a grade attached to them and therefore do not affect the grade point average.

Class Number Class Credit Retroactive Credit for: Credit granted for B grade or better*

101 4 N/A N/A

102 4 101 4

201 3 101, 102 8

202 3 101, 102, 201 11

225 & above 3 101, 102, 201, 202 14 * If you earn a grade of BC or C, half credit will be granted to a maximum of seven credits.

How do I know which course to start in? If you are new to the language, you will start in level 101, which is offered during the fall semester. If you have previous coursework in the language, where you start is based on how many years you’ve completed in high school. Consult with your advisor on this.

What is my Username and Password? Your admission packet has your UW-Green Bay username and initial password. You will use these credentials to log into all of your university accounts, including SIS. What is my username? Usernames consist of the first four characters of your last name, your first name initial, middle name initial and the two-digit day of your birth date. For example, Mary Kay Jones’s birthday is May 4th. Her username is jonemk04. There are occasional exceptions to this syntax. What is my password? When you are admitted, the University generates a default password to help you get logged in for the first couple of times. Your default password is the capitalized first letter of your last name followed by the pound sign and phx (#phx) and then your 9-digit campus identification number. Passwords expire every 180 days. Enrolling in the Password Reset Tool and Changing your Password New students must reset their initial password using the Password Reset Tool at ww.reset.uwgb.edu. When prompted in the tool to enroll, include a secondary email address to which verification codes can be sent.

For more information on using the password reset tool, visit https://uknowit.uwgb.edu/82790

If you have any issues with your username and/or password, contact UW-Green Bay IT Help Desk at 920-465-2309

What is SIS and how do I use it? Students rely heavily on the Student Information System (SIS) to register for and add or drop classes, view class schedules, grades and degree progress reports, print transcripts, and access other academic and financial information including making payments and checking on financial aid status. You will need to log into SIS to register for your GB Orientation and classes during your advising appointment.

Log into SIS with your UW-GB username and password Your admission packet has your UW-GB username and initial password that you will use to log in to SIS. It is important that you log into SIS before your advising appointment. If you have any issues with your username and/or password, please call the UW-GB IT Help Desk at 920-465-2309. Enter your UW-GB username and password in the SIS login page at www.uwgb.edu/sis

Please go to www.uwgb.edu/advising and click on Fall Registration at the top of the page to review the SIS registration videos prior to your advising appointment. SIS videos will show you how to:

• Add/Drop a Courses • View and Remove Holds • Use Your Enrollment Shopping Cart • Check Your Academic Requirements (Gen Ed & Major etc.)

The best way to stay on track and in charge of your academics is to frequently check the Academic Requirements Tool in your SIS account. This is a degree audit of your graduation requirements. Your advisor can go over this more in-depth during an advising appointment in the fall semester. Bonus Tip: It’s to your benefit to become comfortable with SIS and how to use it. Don’t be afraid to click around in all areas of your account to become more comfortable with the system.

When entering your username, do NOT include "@uwgb.edu" at the end.

What will my Class Schedule look like? A few things to keep in mind about your college schedule Right now, you are only choosing Fall Semester classes. These classes will run from September through December. You will select courses for your Spring Semester, which runs from the end of January through May, in November. College classes are measured in units of academic progress called credits. Each credit is based on about an hour of class time. 1 credit = ~ 1 hour of class per week. Most classes at UW-Green Bay are 3 credits because you will meet in class about three hours per week. How many credits are recommended? 6 credits is typically the minimum credit load for most financial aid eligibility 12 credits is the minimum credit load for full-time purposes 18 credits is the maximum credit load for any student 15 credits per semester is typically recommended and here is why: GRADUATE SOONER. Students who take 15 credits per semester or 30 credits per year are more likely to graduate in 2 years or 4 years for the associate and bachelor degrees respectively. Plus, the longer you stretch out your undergraduate experience, the less likely you are to ever graduate. Research also shows that students who take more credits earn higher grades. SAVE MONEY. College expenses add up every year. For many students, tuition, fees, room and board, books, and the wages you would have earned at a full-time job can top $50,000. Graduating on time helps make a degree more affordable and reduces how much you need to borrow to pay for your education. LIVE THE DREAM. When you finish on time, you can take the next steps to launch your career or earn an advance degree and use what you learned to make meaningful contributions to your community.

Class Scheduling Guidelines A fun and exciting part of being in college is that you get to select your own class schedule! This means that in many cases, you choose the times and days that work best for you. Sometimes, though, this kind of opportunity for choice can be overwhelming – especially your first time! Here are a couple of tips to keep in mind when putting together your class schedule: Try to spread out your classes over five days of the week Scheduling classes on only three days in order to study on two days may be a fine idea theoretically but, in reality, rarely works well for students. Be aware of prerequisites. Some courses have enrollment requirements called “Prerequisites” which are requirements that need to be satisfied BEFORE you can enroll in a course. These are listed as the Enrollment Requirements in SIS under the Enrollment Information. You will find the exact prerequisite listed after “P:”

If there is no enrollment requirement listed, then the course does not have a prerequisite. Don’t worry about enrolling in a class for which you are not qualified. SIS will not allow you to enroll in a course if you do not have the prerequisite. Balance your schedule with courses that fulfill requirements with classes in which you have an interest. This is especially important if you are undecided on a major. While it’s important to take the English/Math, First Year Seminar and General Education courses, it’s equally important to find a class (at least one!) about which you are really excited! You will only be spending about 15 hours per week in class, but… Much of your work will be done outside of class! Plan to spend 2–3 hours per hour of class each week for studying and other outside class work. This means if you have 15 credits, you should be spending about 30–45 hours per week outside of class to do well in your classes. This is true for ALL students – even those who barely studied in high school!

The grid below is helpful when planning your courses, as it can be hard to keep all the days and times straight. You can use this grid, or print another one from the Advising website at uwgb.edu/advising and click on Fall Registration. Bonus Tip: Use a pencil.

Who can Help me? All students are assigned an academic advisor and below are just a few of the many ways your advisor can help: • Specific Questions Regarding Your General Education Classes • Save Time and Money by Staying on Track for Graduation • Major Exploration • Class Scheduling • Assistance with the Student Information System (SIS) • General Academic Problem Solving

You will work with an advisor to register for your classes, but this may not be the advisor that you are assigned to for your first year. You will be officially assigned an advisor shortly after orientation.

Once you are assigned an advisor, you will be able to find their contact info in your SIS account:

Visit our advising webpage at https://www.uwgb.edu/advising/ to meet the staff and explore the many resources we have put together for our students!

How can I Stay Connected? Check your UW-GB Email

Just like the job you’re going to college to prepare for, UW-GB relies heavily on e-mail for communication – that will be the primary way you communicate with your instructors, your advisor(s), and support staff around campus. To help you adapt to how we use e-mail, here are five tips: ¨ Download Outlook app to your smart phone, tablet or laptop. Call the IT Help Desk at 920-465-2309.

By having this kind of direct access to your e-mail account, it will be much easier to check your e-mail and receive alerts about new messages.

Bonus Tip: The Outlook App on your phone sorts messages between “Focused” and “Other”. Be sure to check both folders so you don’t miss out on important information.

¨ Add checking e-mail to your daily routine – You should check your e-mail at least twice a day, once in the

morning and once in the afternoon to make sure you’re seeing messages when they need to be read and acted upon.

¨ Engage when engaged – If an instructor, advisor, or support staff member takes the time to e-mail you, they’re expecting a timely response or some other action from you, so be sure to respond or act as directed.

¨ Practice good e-mail etiquette – Writing an e-mail isn’t the same as sending a text message or posting something on social media; it is a professional form of communication, so be sure to address the person your sending, clearly identify your reason for contacting them and close by “signing” your name.

¨ Organize your in-box regularly – Just like you need to clean up your room when it gets cluttered, you need to do the same with your e-mail in-box. Keep what you need and store them in folders you create for your classes, campus activities, etc., and delete what you don’t. Staying on top of what’s in your in-box will make sure that important e-mail about an upcoming test doesn’t get lost in the mix!

Schedule an appointment with your advisor The easiest way to schedule an appointment is through the Navigate app, download it to your phone today!

First-Year Planners Below are First-Year Planners for the academic programs organized under each of the four colleges at UW-Green Bay. Please use these as an advising tool to identify suggested courses appropriate for your first two semesters at UW-GB. The Academic Catalog at http://catalog.uwgb.edu/undergraduate/programs/ can also be consulted for course options appropriate for each major and/or minor.

Undecided on a major? It’s perfectly OK to not know what major/career path you wish to pursue. The good news is we have several resources to help you along the way! We have designed a course (PSYCH 225) which provides students with the knowledge and resources necessary for effective career decision-making in college. The class sessions and assignments focus on self-assessment, learning and applying career development theories, exploring major and career options, and establishing goals for career/life planning. Career Advising is available and very popular for our undecided student! Visit their website for more information or to schedule an appointment! https://www.uwgb.edu/careers/explore-majors-careers/career-counseling/
