TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The L shines upon you and the glory of the Lord appears over you. Isaiah 60:1 6 Second Reading — The mystery has been made known that the Gen les are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Ephesians 3:2 3a, 5 6 Gospel — Magi from the east arrived, saying, “Where is the newborn King of the Jews?” Ma hew 2:1 12
Epiphany of the lord January 5
LIGHT OF THE WORLD Epiphany can be understood as an extension of the Na vity of the Lord that we celebrate on December 25. While at Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ coming as the long awaited King and Messiah of the Jewish people, on Epiphany we celebrate the revela on that Jesus is the Savior and Light of all na
ons—Jews, Gen les and all people. The star shines so brightly that it a racts magi who come from far distant countries to worship Jesus. They are not Jews, yet they are drawn to the Light of the world. The le er to the Ephesians reveals that the Light of the world was for the Gen les as well as the Jews—Christ gathers all people into the light of His love. The reading from Isaiah also describes a gathering of diverse peoples, but this me it is to the light that emanates from the people of God. J.S.Paluch Co. EPIPHANY: TO FIND OUR MEANING IN CHRIST On the weekend of January 4 and 5, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. Epiphany! What a wonderful word. Even its secular de ni on is thrilling: “a sudden realiza on about the nature or meaning of something.” It brings all sorts of images to mind: a light bulb suddenly turning on, shedding brilliant illumina on; a revela on that brings a gasp; an idea so vivid we pause and give thanks; a truth so powerful we fall to our knees. The feast of the Epiphany is all of those things and more. We celebrate the mysterious appearance at Jesus’ birthplace of three men from the East. They had set o on a most quixo c journey, seeking what they would nd at the end of a star’s dazzling rays. What, we wonder, did they make of the epiphany with which their journey ended? Did they spend the rest of their lives trying to discern what their discovery of the baby meant, or did the Christ Child gi them with “a sudden realiza on” of His nature? What more could they – or we – want of a life’s journey, than to nd, in our epiphany, the Christ wai ng for us? The twelve days of Christmas have led us to this place, where Gen
les from afar have discovered Christ, thereby revealing that He came for everyone, for each one of us throughout history, and not just for the Jewish people to whom he was born. The feast of Epiphany brings us to the last week of our liturgical celebra on of Christmas. But for the Chris an steward, Epiphany is not an end but a beginning. This feast reminds us that the New Year beckons us to openness about the epiphanies to which God leads us if we but keep an open, prayerful heart, a heart full of deep, awed gra tude. Let us pray never to become too jaded, too full of certainty, too wrapped up in the rou ne of life to be asleep at the me of epiphany. If we could resolve to keep only one New Year’s Resolu on, let it be this: to pay a en on to the epiphanies God places before us.

ST. ANDRE BESSETTE—JANUARY 6 Born in Canada, Andre worked for three years in the United
States as a weaver and manual laborer. A er returning to Canada in 1870, he joined the Congrega on of Holy Cross and took nal vows in 1874. For decades, Brother Andre humbly served his community near Montreal as doorman, janitor, barber, gardener and in rmarian. With St. Joseph as his model and intercessor, he developed a healing min
istry and huge following. In 1904, he moved into Montreal to help build the Oratory of the Holy Cross and remained
there for the rest of his life. When this “Miracle Man of Montreal” was canonized in 2010, Pope Benedict XVI said he “lived the bea tude of the pure of heart.”
ST. RAYMOND OF PENYAFORT—JANUARY 7 Born in Catalonia, Spain, he was already an accomplished
academic and preacher when he joined the Dominicans in 1222. Called to Rome as papal confessor in 1230, he collected conciliar and papal degrees in a standard work used by canon lawyers for nearly 700 years. Returning to Spain in 1236, he devoted himself to conver ng Muslims and Jews, establishing schools to teach Arabic and Hebrew

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT In today’s second reading, we hear the teachings of Saint Paul to the members of the Church at Ephesus. He proclaims that he, and they, are stewards of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and therefore stewards of God’s loving, unifying and inclusive grace. He also proclaims that the Holy Spirit is at work within each of them, if only they would be open to the Spirit. Today, our world races by with intolerance, violence, desperate poverty, fear and division. At the beginning of this New Year, perhaps it is appropriate to re ect on Saint Paul’s words and ask ourselves how we can be good stewards of the Gospel today. How will we allow the Holy Spirit to work within us? How can we be be er stewards of Christ’s jus ce and peace?

PARISH SUPPORT FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS It is the responsibility of every Catholic to support Catholic educa on. This is clear from Church teaching and the Code of Canon Law. The Long Range Plan mandates that each parish must help support the Catholic parochial elementary schools which are a ended by children of the home parish. For parents or legal guardians to qualify for payment of this fee, families must be REGISTERED, ACTIVE, AND SUPPORTING members of that parish. Each parish is allowed to de ne for itself what “registered,” “ac ve” and “suppor ng” mean. In consulta on with the church Finance Commi ee and the Pastor, the following de ni ons have been established to qualify for support from our Parish: REGISTERED: Parents or legal guardians who live within or outside parish boundaries and who have a parish census form on le are considered registered in Sts. Peter and Paul. ACTIVE: Parents or legal guardians are considered ac ve if they regularly ful ll their Sunday and Holy day obliga ons by a ending Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Church. It is expected that they have par cipated in at least one parish organiza on, work ac vity, or liturgical ministry in the previous year. Mass a endance will be veri ed by the record of their regular use of the parish envelope system. NOTE WELL: Simply dropping a child o for Mass with a Sunday envelope, or mailing the envelopes to the Parish O ce is unacceptable to be considered an ac ve member of this Church Parish. SUPPORTING: Parents or guardians are considered suppor ng members of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish when they contribute a minimum of $780.00 annually or $15.00 a week, using the envelope system or a recordable method in O ertory Giving. The Parish Finance Commi ee, in consulta on with the pastor, will make the nal determina on concerning the ful llment of these requirements by each family. If a family with students in a Catholic parochial elementary school is judged not to qualify, the parents will be responsible for paying the voucher. Those who have ful lled these criteria during the past year will have their voucher lled for the 2020 2021 school year. Those who have not must begin ful lling their obliga ons to the Parish, if they wish the Church Parish to ll their voucher for the 20212022 academic year. It is realized that these criteria may seem stringent to some. We wholeheartedly and gladly support Catholic schools; however, it is simply not fair to those who con nuously and sacri cially support the Parish to have to pay for the Catholic schooling of those families who are “Catholic” only as a ma er of convenience and who contribute li le or nothing to our community of faith.
