STRUCTURAL STEEL NOTES:

1. Steelwork:

1.1. Structural steel to be Grade 300WA to SABS 1431-2005. Steel to

be free of laminations.

1.2. Fabrication of structural steelwork to be in accordance with BS

5400-1980 Part 6

1.3. All holes shall be drilled or punched.

1.4. Plates shall be sawn or machine flame cut.

1.5. Shop-detail drawings shall be approved by the Engineer before

fabrication commences.

1.6. After fabrication the nose shall be erected at the fabrication site.

Components shall then be suitably marked to facilitate re-erection

on site. No steps will be permitted in the bottom flange sliding

surface.

1.7. Fabrication and Assembly: In accordance with clause 6803 (J) of

the standard specifications.

1.7.1. Position: Transverse position at deck connection ± 10mm

1.7.2. Alignment: Deviation of center line of bottom flange from

specified line ± 3mm OVER 12m with MAXIMUM 5mm deviation

1.7.3. Surface Regularity: Surface regularity of sliding surface = 1mm

OVER 1m

1.7.4. Slope: Slope in both directions on the sliding surface = ± 0,1%

2. Connections:

2.1. Welded connection:

2.1.1. All welding shall be in accordance with SABS 044-1983 or latest

revised. Manufacturer is to submit welding procedure and

welders qualification report

2.1.2. All butt welds in web and flange plates shall be full penetration

V-notch butt welds.

2.1.3. All other welds shall be continuous fillet welds. Minimum fillet

weld sizes shall be as follows:

Thickness of thicker part: Weld Size:

-up to 12mm 5mm

-over 12mm up to 20mm 6mm

-over 20mm up to 40mm 8mm

-over 40mm up to 60mm 10mm

- except that the weld size does not have to exceed the

thickness of the thinner part.

2.2. Bolted connections:

2.2.1. Bolted connections shall be made using high strength friction grip

Grade 8.8 and 4.8 bolts. Bolts shall be used and installed in

accordance with SABS 094-1982 (turn of the nut method) A

maximum of one re-use only of HSFG bolts will be permitted.

2.2.2. Faying surfaces shall be blast cleaned to ensure a minimum

friction coefficient of 0.5 and shall be free of all deleterious

material.

3. Painting:

3.1. The underside of the bottom flanges (the sliding surfaces) shall

not be painted.

3.2. The remainder of the nose (with the exception of areas referred to

in 2.2.2 and 3.1 above) shall be painted with one coat of

zinc-chromate primer followed by one coat of undercoat as a

minimum acceptable specification.
