INTRODUCTIONA roof panel with improved highthermal performance. It is availablewith U values as low as 0.15W/m2K, with insulation no morethan 192mm thick, thanks to theincorporated PIR foam.UNIPUR PLUS is durable as thehard PIR foam is moisture-resistantdue to the structure of the materialand thus virtually does not age. As a result the insulation value ismaintained throughout the entirelifespan of the building.UNIPUR PLUS is used to provideinsulation and structural supportfor any kind of roof covering – eg,traditional tiles, slates, concretetiles, zinc, etc with pitches ofbetween 15° and 60°, in domesticand commercial buildings. The panels are suitable forrefurbishment and new build.
DescriptionThe UnIPUR PlUS panels are available in a range of standard depths according toinsulation thickness and U-value required. The panels comprise 2 timber rafters in the longitudinal direction fixed to andstabilised by a rigid facing board whichalso forms the ceiling finish. These outerrafters are set back so that they can easilybe combined at locations of the roof hipsand valleys. Between the rafters a layer of PIR foam is incorporated. The top layerconsists of a 3mm water-resistantchipboard (density: ca. 700 kg/m³) onwhich a spruce counter batten is glued. The 3mm chipboard of the top board isglued on the PIR-Foam.These ‘all-in-one’ panels are easy and veryquick to install and ready to receive theroof covering. They create an airtight, virtually watertight, warm roof in a fractionof time compared with traditionalmethods.BBA Pending.

INSTALLATION OF UNILIN STRUCTURALINSULATED PANELS
The most successful projects are accomplished because theresources are planned andorganised in advance, and all therisks are understood beforehand. This is especially true when considering an advanced building method. UnIlInstructural insulated panels are designedspecifically for your project. When thebuild process is well planned the panelswill be installed much faster and moresafely than a conventional build.
Here are some key points toremember when planning for andinstalling your UNILIN roof, spandrelor wall.• Make sure your design team is able
to specify and detail “SIP” roofs. Thedetailing and sealing of the roof andwalls is crucial to their performance.
The structural elements of the roof need to be optimised to beeconomically viable, and comply withdesign codes. If your design team needsadvice, or you want our technical teamto check things out beforehand, thenjust contact us – the sooner the better!
• The panels are normally cut in ourfactory facility in Belgium. This is one ofthe most advanced panel manufacturingfactories in Europe. You are benefitingfrom large scale manufacturing speed, volume and accuracy. It is thereforeabsolutely vital to the success of yourproject that you measure and doublecheck every dimension and angleneeded to produce the panel. Ultimatelyit is your responsibility to sign off theproduction schedules and design – wecan assist you of course. BUT rememberonce a panel is in production, it isvirtually impossible to alter.
• The delivery of your panels should beconsidered very carefully. Your project management team needs to identify the
access requirements, the offloadingarea, whether the sequence of the panel installation affects the position of menand machines and the nature of thelifting machinery. It’s important tounderstand whether a crane is neededor whether you have access to anhydraulic lifting clamp. A well-trainedteam versed in “SIPS” can work at an amazing pace – with the rightequipment and forward planning. This is also when health and safety becomesparamount to your project. You need tomake sure that your risk assessmentsand method statements reflect the typeof “fast-track” construction issuesinvolved.
• When installing the panels rememberthat the correct fixing details and toolsare going to make life easier, and ofcourse more cost-effective in the longrun. Cross junctions – for longroof slopes and valleys At cross junctions, the end ofthe UnIlIn panels mustalways be fixed on a purlin. Thebearing should be minimum30mm per roof panel.A gap should be left betweenthe panels to allow for thespray can nozzle (Ø=5mm).These junctions must becarefully sealed to keep waterout, firstly by injectinginsulation foam, and thenapplying a breathablemembrane from the ridgecovering the junction.

Longitudinal junctionsTo maintain good thermalinsulation, and to create awatertight and airtightstructure, the longitudinaljunctions must be sealed byspraying insulation foam intothe joint (see photo 1).
Important considerationswater, wind and air leakage Carefully seal all junctionsbetween panels, and betweenpanels and other elements(chimney stack, gutter, walls, abutting buildings, etc).

Vermin and ventilationAlways provide ventilation inaccordance with BuildingRegulations requirements.Appropriate measures shouldbe taken to avoid ingress of insects, etc.
Mould formationTo avoid mould formation onwood facing (ie, plywood orT&G), it is advisable to keepthe building well ventilatedand/or to apply the finishingpromptly.

UNILIN structural insulated roofpanels are already established asmarket leaders in Western Europefor the supply of insulated roofsolutions. However, in recognition of the challengesof the UK market, UnIlIn has developed a complete roof package of gable andspandrel wall systems. Allowing a rapidinstallation of the entire roof structurefrom wall plate, in hours rather than days.Producing a prefabricated airtightstructure, out-performing the buildingregulations in terms of acoustic, thermal, fire regulations and air tightness. In independent testing carried out by theBRE (test report no. 243464) the systemachieved the following result, right:
Party wall sound reduction.
The system is simple and requires nospecialist expertise other than those of a carpentry contractor. The panels are lifted up onto the deck ofthe final floor and installed and proppedone after another. The panels are joined together completewith socket positions for the installation ofpurlins and jointing elements for attachingstandard panels together. The purlins are then added, and UnIlIn'Sunique UnIPUR insulated panels are

secured to the purlins and walls. To this structure dormers can be added and roof lights cut in.The system dramatically reduces on-site time, improves air tightness andconsequently improves the effectivenessof the insulation, which can exceedbuilding regulations.UnIlIn spandrel panels resolve one of the major issues when using SIP panels ongable roofs, that of securely and speedilybuilding up gable and party walls. Alsocreating the added benefit of improvedhealth and safety due to the modularnature of construction, the robust natureof the panels and the virtual elimination of fall risk through the roof.

Sustainability is a vital concept for all futurebuildings in the UK. The term can be used todescribe many aspects of the procurementprocess, from initial design right though to how materials are disposed of at thebuilding’s end of life.As a large international company we have aresponsibility not only to our shareholders butto our people and the environment. We take this seriously and you are more thanwelcome to read our environmental policiespertaining to our products and our company ingeneral. The company is committed to reducingits carbon footprint in all its operations and isstriving to become a great example in theconstruction materials industry of how to beprofitable and environmentally sound. We all have our part to play if we want toprosper in this industry and meet the needs ofnot only our times, but those uncertain times inthe future that our children and grandchildrenwill inherit from us. Our products are designed to be of the highestquality, including the processes by which theyare made. The issue of embodied carbon andcarbon emissions is becoming a driver for newlegislation coming into force over the next fewyears. We have no doubt that the use of Wholelife Cycle Costings and other environmentalmetrics will become more important than theycurrently are. Simply choosing the cheapest, minimum solution will not work anymore. newassessments such as SAP calculations andBREEAM already take energy efficiency intoaccount, but they also stress the need toreduce carbon emissions by setting everincreasing targets. The aim for carbon neutralbuildings and zero emission through Europe inthe next decade will usher in a permanentchange in the UK. This is the challenge we allface. UnIlIn will be the supply partner ofchoice for those construction companies andclients who are ready to change now.The “smart living” slogan means just that -UnIlIn products are the way to achievecompliance with all UK building codes and helpthe UK move to a smarter way of life. We aimto exceed all minimum energy efficiency andbuildability requirements, and set the standard for insulation and timberengineered solutions in the UK. Our drive for excellence means that you can be assured that by using our productssustainability will be built in to all your projectsfor years to come.
