Congratulations to Canning who were the overall winners of the 2019 Queens Park Primary School Athletics Carnival. Congratulations to all of our champion boys and girls, and for everyone who joined in the day. It was one of the best carnivals Ive been a part of for many years. Thank you to Mr Goodhill for organising the day and ensuring it ran smoothly, and staff and parents for assisting on the day. A very special thanks to our wonderful group of parents and P&C who organised the sausage sizzle, noodles and cakes. I look forward to the interschool Athletics Carnival in Term 4. Miss Lilly, Mr Goodhill and Mr Zapeda ventured out with 27 of our year sixes and took them on camp at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp in Hillarys for 3 days last week. The year six students experienced a variety of different activities throughout the camp, challenging themselves on several occasions. Thank you to the P&C for assisting in the camp fundraising to reduce the costs for our students who attended camp. Next Friday, October 27, is Reward Day. This term there will be games set up on the oval and a pizza lunch for students who are invited to Reward Day. To receive an invitation, your son/daughter must have attended school for over 90% of Term 3, and not received more than 2 detentions or a suspension. Well done to our students who will be attending. Returning in 2020 If for any reason your child is not returning to Queens Park Primary School in 2020, can you please let the front office know? I am currently setting up classes for next year and I am also looking at staffing. I would like to wish everyone a safe break and we will see all students back at school on Tuesday October 15, 2019.

Then, Miss Watson let us paint something we show the whole school. Next, we kept practising what we are going to do on assembly. Finally, we did our assembly with lots of people watching us.

Keenan: Room 17 Assembly On Friday we had an assembly. First, we done our research. Then, we painted our state. Next, we done our rehearsal. Finally, we done our assembly. I felt a little bit frightened because I was nervous.

Saud: Room 17 Assembly On Friday we had a assembly. First, we said we are down under in Australia. Then, Anmol and Alexis and Saud came on the stage and we talked about the state of Tasmania. Next, the whole of Room 17 came pm the stage singing we are down under in Australia. Finally, we went off the stage. I like our assembly because it was so much fun.

Mana: Room 17 assembly. On Friday the 13

Primary did a assembly. First. We did many rehearsals so we can get out assembly perfect, but we mucked up sometimes. It was good at our assembly. Then, we painted our states and territories and practised with our states and territories. We got better at our assembly and Me, Abbas and Ciara did South Australia. All of the other states and territories and Miss Watson connected the states and territories. Next, we did all of the things. We did our song, our facts about Australia and we sang our song wrong sometimes, but we practised it. Finally, we did our assembly. I was nervous at first but I got into it and I was in the first part of the assembly. I said ‘we have a catchy tune to help us remember all of the Australian facts.

At Queens Park Primary School in 2019 we will continue to use the PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) Curriculum and we will be posing questions to students about issues or problems that are current at school. In PATHS we want to help students to learn to recognise when they are hav-ing a problem and use thinking skills to control their behaviour. Every fort-night during assembly students will have the opportunity to share their re-sponses to PATHS questions. We will include the PATHS problems in the newsletter each fortnight so par-ents and caregivers have the opportunity to discuss experiences and situa-tions with their child. Some suggestions are to talk with your child about the problem: PATHS Problem Term 3 2019 Week 10 One of your classmates is angry. When you ask them, they say that they are mad about something that happened last week.

They didn’t say anything when it happened, but they’ve been thinking about it ever since then and don’t know how to talk about it.

What is the problem? How would you feel? What could you do to solve the problem? What would you decide to try first?

2019 Athletics Faction Carnival. The students at Queens Park have had a fantastic term of athletics, they have spent many lessons training for their athletics carnival and what an outstanding job they all did at competing in front of their families. The carnival all started with our Jumps and Throws day on Monday 2nd September, which saw students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 compete and produce some outstanding results. A big thank you to Mr Banks, Ms Nafisa and Ms Rath for their help on the day and to all the class teachers for supporting and encouraging the students. On Friday 6th September we had our track events and team games. This day was a lot of fun for students, teachers and all the supporters that came along. The students have put in so much practice this term so it was amazing to see all the parents, grandparents, family and friends there to cheer them on. The way the students dressed up and showed off their faction colours was fantastic and definitely added to the day. Highlights on the day were the team games and how well the students competed and displayed sportsmanship during these events, the sack races, Kindy Races, the students relay races and of course the Parent/Teachers sprint race at the end of the day! I am just glad we had no injuries in this one! Well done to all individual award winners and of course Canning for winning this years Faction Carnival. The carnival is a very big day for our school and without the input from each student and support of their families it would not be the same. One last thank you must go to all staff. They came in early to set-up on the day, assisted with preparation prior to the event and ensured the whole day ran smoothly,. Without your support the day would not have been the success that it was. We can not wait to do it all again next year, what a fun day it was! Thank you Sam Goodhill Physical Education Teacher

Parenting Tip: The difference between consequences and punishment

Research tells us that serious behaviour problems (especially problems of motivation and effort) are never solved by punishment. The threat of punishment is, for a child, only a very small part of learning dis-cipline and self-control. Consequences drive future decisions in a strong way. Help your child to understand the consequences that lay ahead of them so that they can start to adjust their next step accordingly. You can introduce a 1-2-3 alerting system (similar to the 1-2-3 magic approach used in many schools in Perth), to give your child the ‘heads up’ that if they don’t adjust the behavioural direction they are heading, there will be a specific consequence. You can say something like: “I’m going to help you make wise decisions about what happens next, by giv-ing you a clue that you’re heading down the wrong path. I’ll say “that’s a 1 for being rude to mum…on 3, you’ll lose your technology for a day….”” Then, if they persist with the behaviour, quickly state, “That’s a 2 for rudeness – you’re choosing to lose your technology.” And if they persist, “And that’s a 3 for being rude to mum – you’ve chosen to lose your technology until after school tomorrow.” Remember, when deciding on consequences, they will be most effective when they are: known to children in advance, delivered without anger, of short duration, and partnered with a chance to start over.
