At Stairlifts Today, one of our team will come and visit you, to give your staircase a comprehensive survey and assess which type of rail is suitable.

Although the stairlifts we supply have been designed to work with most staircases, sometimes installation of a stairlift will not be possible. If this is the case we will not sell you one - your safety comes before our sales figures. Whether you have straight or curved stairs, our rails are attached to the stairtread, and can be fitted to either side of the stairwell - depending on your survey results.

Over the years many people have asked how to measure their stairs, so we have produced this simple guide to show you how. This step-by-step guide is for straight staircases only. If your staircase is curved and has bends and turns, it is best to request the help of a surveyor, which we can also help you with.

All you need is a 5m tape measure and a notebook to write down the measurements. Please also send us some photos from a camera or phone so that we can view the staircase in full. Try to include any power sockets near the top or bottom of the stairs and also show the front door in relation to the stairs so we can determine the level of access for installing the stairlift.

Step One - Installation SideStand at the bottom of the stairs and look up the staircase. This will determine if the stairlift should be installed on the left or right side. With safety in mind the best side for a stairlift is always on the outside wall side. If the staircase has walls on both sides or is situated in the middle of the house, then determine which side would be most practical for the user of the stairlift from the bottom of your staircase.

Step Two - Staircase LengthStand at the top of the staircase and measure from the top stair tread (A) and run your tape measure down the staircase. The tape measure should touch every edge of every stair tread and the tip of the tape measure should be extended right down to the bottom floor area. This is your floor to top nose measurement.

Step Three - Staircase WidthMeasure the width of the staircase from the most narrowest point along them (C to D) making sure you measure from the skirting board and not the wall. Please take into account all newel posts and hazards that might cause a problem during travel.

Step Four - Bottom Clearing MeasurementMeasure from the riser of the bottom stair tread (E) to the nearest obstacle (F). This could be a nearby door opening, radiator, wall or cupboard. A minimum distance of 18” to 20” (450mm - 500mm) is needed for the stairlift to be parked for getting on and off safely. If the space is limited you may require a hinge rail system.

Step Five - Nose to Nose MeasurementMeasure from the same point on the nose of tread 2 to exactly the same point on the nose of tread 3 in a straight line. This is normally around 300mm but can be plus or minus 25mm depending on the age and design of the staircase. This enables us to double check your measurements.

Swivel SeatUsing the levers enables you to swivel the seat easily, making it simple to get off the chair. Alternatively, you can choose to have a powered swivel seat, which turns the chair to face the landing automatically.

Footrest LeverTo store the stairlift away, you can fold the arm and seat and press the lever to raise the footrest. There is no awkward bending down, which is particularly useful at the top of the stairs.

Safety EdgesIf there is something blocking the chair on the stairs, the safety edges recognise this and the lift will stop automatically.

How much does a stairlift cost? There is no fixed price for a stairlift as yours will be tailor-made to fit to your stairs. The price will depends on which model you buy and what type of stairs you have. Generally, it is cheaper to buy a stairlift for straight stairs as there is more work involved in making a rail to fit curved stairs.

What if my wall is not strong enough to support the weight? Many people are worried about their stairlift damaging their walls, but in actual fact, all stairlifts are fitted to the steps and not the wall. The stairlift brackets need to be screwed into the steps, so it does not matter at all if your wall is non-supporting or plasterboard - and it will not damage your carpet either!

Can other people still use the stairs once the stairlift has been fitted? Modern stairlifts have a slimline design and seats, arm and footrests that can be folded up when not in use, leaving plenty of room for other stair users to walk up and down the stairs. Most models take up about 275mm. Stairlifts have to be installed according to strict British Safety Standards that do not allow any stairlift to obstruct a staircase.

How long does the installation take? Your stairlift will be constructed and tested in the factory, so it will arrive at your home ready to be fitted. It will be installed by our professional fitters with minimal disruption and inconvenience. It usually takes only 1-2 hours to fit a stairlift to straight stairs, slightly longer to fit a curved stairlift. The rail will be fitted first, then the motor, and the seat. It will then be tested thoroughly and you will be shown how to use it.

How is a stairlift operated? Stairlifts are operated by simple and large up and down paddle switches on the arms, which are designed to work with minimal pressure. This makes them suitable for people with arthritis or who are visually impaired. You simply need to gently press the paddle in the direction of the travel to start the stairlift.

Will it be expensive to run? Modern stairlifts are very energy-efficient and economical to run. They run on a 13 amp socket and the daily cost of running it is comparable to using a kettle.

What happens if something is left on the stairs and it gets in the way of the stairlift? Stairlifts have a built-in safety sensor that will detect an obstruction on the stairs, such as objects that have been dropped, pets or children. The sensors will respond by automatically stopping the stairlift so that any obstruction can be removed safely.

How long will I have to wait before it is installed? The delivery time will depend on your chosen model and how much work is involved in the factory to build the rail to fit your staircase. Generally, stairlifts for straight stairs are installed in under 2 weeks. You may have to wait 4-6 weeks for a stairlift for curved stairs. Please ask us for an estimated delivery waiting time.

What happens if someone has used the lift to go upstairs and I am stuck downstairs? Stairlifts come with remote controls, similar to what you use for the TV, which is useful if someone else in your house uses your stairlift and you need to call it back. You can also use it to send something upstairs without having to carry the item up. Many people use their stairlift in this way, sending things like laundry or books to someone waiting at the other end. Your remote controls can be mounted on the wall at the top and bottom of your stairs so you are always able to find them when you need them

Will it be noisy?Modern stairlifts are DC powered and run on a low voltage, so they are very quiet. You should be able to use your stairlift at any time of the day or night without disturbing others.

What happens if my stairlift breaks down? In the unlikely event of a breakdown, we are able to get to you quickly to fix the problem.

What happens if there is a powercut? Stairlifts run on DC power with a battery backup, which automatically charges up when not in use. If there is a powercut your stairlift should carry on working for 6-8 more trips.

How fast will it go?The stairlifts glide smoothly up and down the stairs at a gentle speed of between 7cm and 15cm a second, equivalent to 0.016 - 0.34mph. All models have a seatbelt fitted for your safety.
