Once again the Carnival is here. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Carnival Team for their hard work and dedication in this 52nd year. This years event has been fraught with many difficulties. With low gate receipts from last years event , only 3 committee members and 2 advisors put themselves forward to coordinate the Whole Event.
Due to these problems earlier this month we had to make dramatic changes to the event with rising costs of road closures, fencing, security, first aiders, the list is endless!. The
decision was made to cancel the Procession and the bar and bands. This would make a saving of over £3500.00 and the need for 16 volunteers to help marshal the procession. After the announcement was made the committee was inundated with volunteers and donations from people on Save the Stowmarket Carnival Facebook page, Town 102 listeners and from around the town. We even had a young boy from Kesgrave offer his pocket money. After all of this I am pleased to say we now have a procession, a bar and bands for the Saturday and
many of our usual events such as window spotting, arena acts, crafts, and for the Sunday a pet and dog show. Therefore it is with a brave heart that I am hoping that we can also carry the Carnival on into its 53rd year.
The Carnival is the biggest fund raising event held in Stowmarket and I think value for money family event, we all look forward to seeing you there as without your support the Carnival will not continue!

Carnival Commitee
I have always loved the Carnival since I moved to Stowmarket from the age of 6 which is now many years ago and decided last year to join the committee. I am responsible for organising the Craft Marquee and many of you may now know me from our Facebook page! It has been an interesting year with a few ups and downs but the event has now come together. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody
that has rallied round , offered donations and their valuable time over the weekend. We hope you enjoy this years carnival and come out in force to support the Procession and all that we have planned on the recreation ground. We are a very small committee and always looking for new volunteers, so if you think this could be you please get in contact with myself by email [email protected].
Every year any excess profits the carnival makes goes to local charities. Charities can submit requests through the Chairlady but we do ask that all requests are local to the area of Stowmarket and have helped in someway on carnival day or in the run-up to the carnival. In 2011 the following donations were gratefully recorded
£60 The Saturday Club£60 St Marys & St Peters Church£415 Dream Flights
If your charity would like to be considered for a donation from this year’s profits please write to Stowmarket Carnival Committee, 5 Wolsey Road,

The foundation of the carnival is one of local charitable donations, and this theme is carried throughout the weekend by the presence of many charities and groups helping to raise awareness of what they can do for you and those in our community.
Be it support for children with disabilities, Servicemen injured in the line of duty, animal protection or assistance for our aging population there will be a group for you and some who you never knew existed, as I can testify! Being a new member of the committee this year I have been overwhelmed by the response of these local groups and their willingness to give up their time to show their support in fundraising for these worthy causes.
It is also nice to see that not only are the larger charities fundraising for themselves but members of the community going out and making a go of it by themselves, which to me shows real spirit in today’s economic climate, having the motivation to do something for the benefit of others speaks volumes.
As I mentioned earlier I am a new to the committee, having only lived in the town for 2 years I thought I’d throw my cap into the ring, and while I’m not saying it’s easy; it is immensely rewarding, and heart warming to see the commitment that is clearly demonstrated by the rest of the team. I would say to anyone in 2 minds about volunteering that it is neither painful nor time consuming.
Finally I’d just like to say a big thank you to everyone who is taking part this weekend, and to Stowmarket for your kind generosity over the last 51 years of the Carnival, lets make the 52nd something to remember, but if anything you see here has sparked an interest or you would like to be a part of the 53rd Carnival or you know of a under r e p r e s e n t e d charity, please drop me a line to Stowmarket_c a r n i v a l @hotmail.co.uk.

4 Stowmarket Carnival
A dark cloud loomed over the 2012 procession and for a time it was looking unlikely to run. However, the people of
Stowmarket spoke out and fought to keep their procession running. Town FM got behind the campaign and soon we had offers of help and financial donations from Hudson Signs, A Mystery Man, and
GPS Telecoms, which has meant the signage and trophies could be purchased. Once again the Carnival C o m m i t t e e 2012 would like to thank those who made a d o n a t i o n , without your

Stowmarket Rugby Club will once again be running the bar at the Carnival however this year, it will be for the Saturday only. We are also responsible for the band line up and are pleased to say that Stowmarket’s finest ‘Regency Gentlemen’ will be opening the show for us at 6.30pm followed by another great band, Ska’d for Life.
All funds that are raised at the carnival by the Rugby Club are put back into the Club’s Youth Section which is growing year by year and now have a youth membership totalling 250.
For more information regarding the Bar at the carnival or the facilities available at Stowmarket Rugby Club, please contact Suzanne Allen on 07765699610.
Dozens of businesses and shops in Stowmarket are taking part in this year’s carnival competition.
Entrants simply have to keep their eyes wide open and scour the town to find the shops and businesses (which have spot numbers in their windows) and then find the item on display which they do not normally sell.
For example, if you walk past a shoe shop and spot a lump of cheese in their window, you should find their spot number and write the details on your entry forms which will be available from spot entry shops. Please note: Dead flies do not count as the mystery item!!

We would like to thank all the groups for the many hours of time they take to arrange the vehicles, make costumes and all pull together to make the procession such a special event. Without your participation there would be no procession and we know that come rain or shine the people of Stowmarket will turn out in their hundreds to watch as the floats pass through. Even with the rain last year there were smiles all round, so this year lets make more noise, have more waves and bigger smiles as the floats pass through. Be proud of your procession and Thank you once again for your support.
The procession leaves from ICI/PPG Carpark at 12.30pm to arrive at the recreation ground at 2pm.
As the procession moves through Town some road closures and delays may occur, so please plan your journey ahead of time.

Craft & Trades Saturday 14th July.
My name is Claire and have lived in Stowmarket since the age of five, I have 2 part-time jobs and also volunteer on the carnival committee!
One of my highlights as a child was to visit the craft marquee at the carnival, so now I
find myself organising it for the second year running. Last year we saw a huge response to the advertising and had a full marquee, I would like to thank all of you that turned out in the pouring rain to come and support us, I have had my fingers crossed for better weather this year.
This year we have advertised widely and the response has been overwhelming again even though there are so many other events on this year.
The crafters range from selling jewelry, cards, baby clothes, shabby chic furniture and even someone doing photography !
It is an ideal opportunity for local crafters and businesses to promote their wares and trade, so I hope you will take some time out and pop along to see and support our crafters inside and outside the marquee, there is sure to be something for everybody. We look forward to seeing you there.
If you are interested in taking part in next years carnival marquee then please get in contact with me [email protected]. or join our facebook page to keep up to date with all the years activities and events.

Crafts & Trades Saturday 14th July 2012
This last run of Carnivals started in 1961, when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second visited Stowmarket, and the Carnival darts started the next year . The late Fred Sergeant gave a cup as a perpetual trophy . He was a County Councillor & President of the Stowmarket & District Dart League.
Two or three years later Ladies started to entire & so a small prize was given to the lady that got the furthest. A lady has never won but I expect if it continues one day one will.
In the early years there have been as many as 96 entries when it was held at the Suffolk Lawn Mowers Social Club.. It then moved to the I.C.I
canteen and now Stowmarket Football Club, where it has been for the last fifteen years.
As the entries dwindled there has been a “blind” doubles competition to make a night of darts (where partners were drawn)
In 1977 on the Queens Silver Jubilee, “Under 21years” “Ladies” & “mixed Doubles” competitions were added.
Many years ago it was decided to hold the competition in the marquee on the Recreation Ground . The floor moved as it was walked on!! It was never held like that again.
When the competition started an average score of 45 would see you win most matches, now it is 100. Darts has improved greatly!

As you may or may not know this year has been very testing for the Stowmarket Carnival committee. This year saw the demise in volunteers to the committee due to ill health and varying other factors to the point that there were only 3 members, 2 very valuable consultants and our long standing treasurer. We are all voluntary and do this around our jobs and day to day lives.
Last year saw terrible weather that really did rain on our parade! Although some people were brave enough to watch the procession and come onto the Recreation Ground footfall was dramatically less than in previous years, the gate money we receive is primarily used as a basis to fund next years event. We have also had to take into account the ever rising costs of putting on such a large event over a 3 day period. We as a committee had to take the very hard but essential decision to scale back our events, which meant cancelling the Procession amongst other things. The procession as we know is a much loved favorite by all but without the money to pay for the road closure and lack of volunteers to marshall we would have been unable to go ahead. However, since the announcement was made in June we could not believe the response we received. The people of Stowmarket, surrounding villages and Town FM came out in force to show their support by offering help even managing to raise the money through donations to ensure that the Procession went ahead. We thank you so much for this.
Zoe Lynch took on the task of arranging and organising the procession and we would like to take the time to thank her for all her hard work..We do however desperately need more members to join the committee for 2013, without your valuable help and support our tradition of a fantastic family carnival may well be endangered. Please, if can you spare your time, contact any committee member, visit our web page www.stowmarketcarnival.co.uk or our facebook page “Stowmarket Carnival”.The committee thanks each and every one of you and look forward to seeing you at your 52nd Stowmarket Carnival.

May we take this opportunity to ask motorists for extra consideration on carnival Saturday?
With more pedestrians about, please drive slower than usual and be alert to the many excited children.
When parking, please check the route and if you live along it please consider “do I need to park on the road?” to help the parade pass through unhindered.
Places like Combs Ford near the Esso garage are a bit tight for the larger floats.
Many carnival teams on floats will disembark in Recreation Road so space there will be at a premium too.
Finally, thank you all for your consideration and we all wish Stowmarket a great, fun and happy 2012 Carnival.

Stowmarkets Carnival Queen and princesses are an important part of the long tradition of Stowmarket Carnival. Over 50 Years there has always been a Queen and Princesses, one year a Carnival prince was elected!
The carnival court reign for a whole year, and during this time represent the town in a variety of different ways. Our Queen this year has already been involved in the grand opening of Winchesters wine bar in the Fox yard (along with our town mayor Anne Whybrow) and the Queen along with the Princesses also attended the opening of Glow, a new beauty salon in the Stowmarket lesiure centre. The girls were honoured to be invited to these events, and all three are excited about the Carnival procession, and the year ahead.
The carnival procession is an exciting start to a fantastic weekend, and usually consists of a variety of different displays ranging from colourful floats, classic vehicles, marching bands and dance groups.
Every penny collected in the official carnival procession buckets goes to the charity of our carnival queens choice, which this year is the Stroke Association Stowmarket Support Group. So please give generously!
The carnival committee is entirely supported by volunteers who give up their time all through the year to provide the town with a marvellous opportunity to come together an celebrate the fact Stowmarket is and always will be a friendly and vibrant place to live!
the weekend or would like to lend a hand please let us know.
