STOW TIMESCOTSWOLD TIMES
FROM THE EDITOR...
The wonderful June weather enticed us out and we visited some of the localevents, right on our doorstep. We include a handful of photos to give you atiny glimpse of how good they were. The Vintage and Classic Car Show at Churchill & Sarsden assembled over 500gleaming and magnificent machines – ‘eye candy for the automobiliac’, and allthe best marques were there! This event is every second year – they haveestablished a winning formula and if you are hoping to be an exhibitor, put it inyour diary now for June 2016 (this year they were fully booked before Easter). Sezincote & Longborough Traditional Fete is also bi-annual, in the magical andunique setting of Sezincote House. The weather brought the crowds out andeverywhere there were smiling faces; the Champagne and Pimms stall soldout more than once, and the Fete set a new fundraising record of over £8,000.
As an n.b, nearly all the events in the centre pages of the magazine areorganised and run by local volunteers, raising funds for a village hall, a churchroof, or a local charity. They work incredibly hard to give us a wonderful dayout, a special cream tea or a memorable glimpse of the social scene. A hugecheer for all the volunteers and committees! Without them the Cotswolds mightstill be beautiful, but it wouldn’t have the same wonderful community that is itstreasure!
In July the big event is Moreton Art Weeks, highlighting an amazing collectionof artists, artisans and galleries in Moreton over a period of three weeks. Thisyear there is a special exhibition commemorating the start of the First WorldWar. ‘Heroes of Moreton: We Remember Them’ traces the men whose namesare on Moreton’s War Memorial. With readings and poetry it will doubtless bean occasion that will stay in the memories of local people for years to come.
As always, you have a tremendous choice of how to enjoy our area of theCotswolds – the key is to take the opportunity and do just that – enjoy it!
Best WishesJenni Turner, Editor

‘I’ve been told to strengthen my core –how many sit-ups a day should I do?’
It’s a question we are asked a lot. The answer – none! Most people think ofthe core as a nice six-pack, or strong, toned abs, but the truth is that theabdominal muscles are a very small part of the core. The abdominals havevery limited and specific action, and what professionals refer to as the "core"actually consists of many different muscles that stabilize the spine and pelvis, and run the entire length of the torso. When these muscles contract, theystabilize the spine, pelvis and shoulder girdle and create a solid base ofsupport.
If you think about it, it makes sense. What good are endless sit-ups andcrunches to everyday life – it won’t be very often you use that specificmovement. However if you have children, grandchildren, work in the gardenor have a physical job, you will constantly be twisting, stretching, reaching, leaning sideways, forwards and backwards – sit-ups may not seem so usefulnow! A properly strong core however – that will stand you in good stead!
If you would like to learn how to develop a strong core and midsection toprevent injuries and back pain, you know where to ask!

FOSSEWAY ROADWORKS in June 2014
In the June editions the telephone number given to call for information was incorrect. The telephonenumber provided to us was 0800 514514 – and should have been 08000 514514. Please note thisnumber for future reference.
The error was highly irritating to everyone and, of course, it’s too late to act on it now! However, with a notable lack of information available before and during the road closure, poorsignage, the lack of consideration in not signing that the road was open in the evening and over theweekend, and the considerable damage imposed on businesses in all the Fosse towns, there needsto be a major rethink of the County’s road works’ strategy and the procedures set down for Amey andtheir sub-contractors to follow.
Our Gloucestershire County Councillors have a very clear idea of what is not acceptable to thecommunities and will be reporting back to us on future arrangements.
NB. LOCAL TRANSPORT PLAN 2014. Note from Co.Cllr Nigel More – ‘There is a seminar at ShireHall on the 3rd July to discuss the Local Transport Plan 2014. It provides an opportunity for us toraise the profile of the Fosse and to petition for more resources to be concentrated on itsimprovement.’
CDC EFFICIENCY PROGRAMME GOESFROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH (10 June 2014)
The Leader of Cotswold District Council, Cllr Lynden Stowe, hasexpressed his satisfaction that the authority is continuing to move in the right direction towards thegoal of being the most efficient in the country.
At the Cabinet meeting on 5 June, Cllr Stowe reviewed CDC’s performance during 2013-14 andhighlighted the following:• Time taken to process new claims for housing benefit and council tax benefit reduced to 10.6 days(target was 12 days)
• Percentage of council tax collected was 99.1%• Number of working days lost due to sick absence was below 6 days• 3% reduction in CDC share of council tax – joint biggest cut in the country
He commented: “I was encouraged to see this report and it brings home to me how hard the team atCotswold is working to maximise our efficiency. Our aim is to be the most efficient council in thecountry and this end of year report shows that we have broken into the top five. I am very pleasedwith this outcome, and I have asked the Chief Executive to thank the staff for their efforts andsupport. It is important for local taxpayers to know that the Council is not resting on its laurels and Ican assure them that there are more initiatives in the pipeline to keep this momentum going, includingthe recently announced 2020 vision for sharing some services across four authorities.”

Last year at this time I wrote about the numerous planning applications being putforward, particularly in relation to new supermarkets and retirement homes. It’s notmy job to comment on these either way but it is my job to help support businesseswhich provide employment opportunities for local people, whether these are largeorganisations or small local businesses. I mentioned that I thought it would behelpful if district, town & parish councils, with the help of local people, identified thetype of businesses we would like to attract to the area and to make a concertedeffort to try to get these businesses to come to the North Cotswolds. We have lotsto offer. Help should also be given to smaller businesses, many of them one manbands, which have outgrown their dining room tables and are now looking to rentcommercial premises at a reasonable cost. The cost of renting commercial propertyin this area is too high and stops many making the move and many a smallbusiness becoming bigger. We could also help by making that extra effort to buyfrom local suppliers and to shop locally where possible. This in turn will put moremoney back into the local economy and create more employment opportunities.Yes, shopping on the internet is cheaper but is it creating local jobs? Yes, petrol ischeaper at the supermarkets but how far will you have to drive to fill-up in anemergency if all our local filling stations closed? There is no doubt that the businessmodel is changing rapidly & that certain business need to shake themselves into themodern world but it is up to all of us to ensure that our local economy is vibrant sothat there are jobs for local people & that businesses have an incentive to locate tothis area.
Should you require help with your accounts, Vat or payroll you should either contactyour accountant or give me a ring for free telephone advice.

What an outstanding year for sport at Cold Aston! As PE co-ordinator I am
delighted with the success of our teams and overwhelmed with the percentage

involved. The Kiwk cricket teams had a great afternoon at Bourton, with the A
team earning their place at the Cheltenham College final. The B team had a
wonderful team spirit and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Year 5 and 6
participated in the swimming gala, while six Key Stage 2 children go on to the
athletics finals at Deer Park.
Healthy Eating and Exercise Week Children attended workshops focussing
on keeping our bodies healthy, they made healthy snacks, looked at healthy
food types, why we exercise and also visited a relaxation room! The children
also performed a wonderful wake and shake for all parents, well done to those
who joined in! Miss Stevenson, a cardiac nurse, came to talk to the children
about keeping our heart’s healthy. Year 1 and 2 visited Tesco in Stow on their
‘Farm to Fork’ scheme, they explored the different sections and ‘shopped’ for
a healthy dinner, finally they feasted on some fruit! Thank you to Tesco for
having us and our volunteers.

The fantastic ‘Dog Show’ was the star event ofthe day and the pony rides were a hit as always.
The BBQ went down a storm with delicious sausages and burgers fromLower Clopton Farm shop and divine cakes in our cream tea tent weresnapped up. Children at the fair were spoilt for choice when it came tofun activities, with the bouncy castle, face and nail painting,’ Beat theGoalie’ and ‘Name the Sheep’ competitions keeping everyone happy. We’re delighted to report we made almost £1,500 at the fair and hope tobe able to match fund a proportion of money raised. Our thanks go toparents and the local business community who supported us bydonating fantastic raffle prizes and to everybody who helped on the day.We have ‘Yoga Saturday’ planned for the summer term which is beingrun by yoga expert Sophie Whitehouse and will be fun for all the family, and our Summer BBQ and Games Night will be held in July. This isalways a popular event welcoming all current and new families to enjoy afantastic BBQ, refreshments and traditional games for the children -wheelbarrows at the ready! The Junior pupils are all back following two veryexciting residential visits to the Forest of Dean. The Year 3 and Year 4 children spent three daysproblem solving, orienteering, flying through theair on a zip wire, climbing, getting wet wellies ontheir stream study and tunnelling. The fun ofbeing out of doors and staying away with theirfriends was a joy to see. The Year 5 and Year 6children spent a full five days in the Forest ofDean enjoying similar studies along with highwire trapeze jumps, caving at Clearwell Caves, shelter building and field sports.
The Infants topic for this term is castles which included a visit toWarwick Castle. The children were impressed by the sheer size of the castle and loved climbing to the top of the tower. The firing of thetrebuchet and the birds of prey display were very popular.
The junior class are studying the Egyptians this term and have paid avisit to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The visit included a workshop on Life and Death in Ancient Egypt.

Well we have had an amazing start to the last term of the academic year!
Sports day was held on a lovely sunny but not too hot, afternoon with
loads of parents and friends supporting all the children. The Green team
were the victorious champions and everyone had a great time, including
the mums and dads who all got very competitive in their race!
The PTFA have organised a wonderful summer disco for the pupils with
an under -water theme. Class 5 decided all wore onesies!! Lots of
dancing and even karaoke took place and everyone had the chance to
have an ice lolly on the way out to help cool down on a very warm
evening! The hall was decorated with a massive octopus made from
balloons, jelly fish made from crepe paper and origami fish.
These are remaining in the hall until our Summer Fair which is on Friday
4th July, 6 til 8 pm. Everyone is welcome to come along!
We are looking forward to welcoming the new reception children into our
school on their induction afternoons over the next few weeks where they
will be able to experience life in the classroom, this is a great opportunity
for them to get to know their new teachers and teaching assistants and
also use their spacious outdoor learning area with the fort, forest school,
sandpit and learning resources.
The year 6 children are getting ready to attend their induction days at the
Cotswold school in the first week of July and the whole of the juniors are
rehearsing for their summer performance of ‘Robin Hood’.
Our sponsored walk this year is going to be in aid if LINC cancer charity,
everyone in the school will walk around Stow on the 27th June so please
look out for us as we are raising money for a very worthwhile cause!
Class 2 are going to have an overnight stay at Malvern, where they will
be able to experience low ropes courses, zip wires, obstacle course and
archery! We hope that the lovely weather remains with us until then!
We had a hugely successful Science Week in June. One of our parents,Dt Bottley, sheared his sheep and brought in wool for usto investigate. Who knew that each fibre had littlehooks? We are now all lanolin experts. On another day,we had a set of bikes in school, thanks to our DPA,which we pedalled like mad to create enough electricityto have music and flashing lights in the courtyard. Wealso powered some smoothie machines and loved the results! On the Friday, all children from years 1-6 visited the Science Festival inCheltenham. It was great fun, we learnt loads andhad a great day.
We are looking forward to our sponsored walk toBatsford soon and have been deciding whichcharities to support. Many of the older childrenprepared pitches about various charities and theoutcome of our whole-school vote is that we will be raising money forGuide Dogs, RSPCA and Water Aid – all great causes. As usual, we willbe running activities right through the summer holidays. Dormer and non-Dormer children are welcome every day between 8-6pm. There is acomprehensive programme of sports, arts and other entertainment for 2-11 year olds. Please see www.dormerhouse.co.uk for details.
In addition, our very popular 11+ preparation classes will be taking placeon Friday mornings throughout the summer, just to keep those skillsticking over. Further details are on our website but hurry because placesare limited.
