While in theatre, Minister MacKay spoke with the Commander of Regional Command (South), US Major-General James L. Terry, and Task Force Kandahar Commander, Canadian Brigadier-General Dean Milner.

Canada is ending its UN-mandated, NATO-led combat mission to Kandahar province in July 2011 and beginning a non-combat, Kabul-centred training role that will continue until 2014.

“The Canadian Forces serve and sacrifi ce to defend our country and assist the people of Afghanistan rebuild their country,” said Minister MacKay. “Together with their partners from other government departments, as well as our allies,

they are making tangible progress in a very challenging environment. It was an honour for me to spend this special time of year in Afghanistan with the men and women who represent our great country with such eminence.”

Minister Oda met with the Representative of Canada in Kandahar, Tim Martin, and representatives from whole-of-government partners in the Afghan mission.

“The future of Afghanistan depends on the institutions and infrastructure that Canada is helping to create,” added MacKay. “I continue to see improvement every time I come to Afghanistan, and am hopeful for the future.”

Minister MacKay Spends The Holidays In Kandahar

By: Major Chris LarsenOne of the greatest

rewards of working on historical research is fi lling in the gaps in stories that occurred so long ago. Even though it has been 70 years since the Buffalo Squadron’s wartime exploits, we are still learning about the brave aviators and ground crew who sacrifi ced so much during a War that seems so foreign to our modern sensibilities. One has to ask why would so many young people have volunteered to serve, so far away from family and the comforts of home? Many books have

404 Squadron – Glimpses into the Pastbeen written about this and we can only be thankful today that they did.

404 Squadron started a project two years ago to create a website that would take the Buffalo story to a wider audience, for general release, with no expectation of profi t. This information has been released for all to share, because it is imperative that while veterans survive, their story should be made public.

The creation of 404squadron.com was made possible through the hard work of Master Corporal Steve Mayo, who continues to be the webmaster. The site has received several thousand unique hits, and is a portal for families to discuss the wartime exploits of their loved ones. Through the website, families are able to contact the unit to share their stories and offer scans of personal photos. Recently, images of Sergeant Garfi eld Mackay were posted to the 404 Squadron historian by his family.

Garfi eld Mackay was one of the original members of the Herd, arriving in 1941 when the Squadron formed at Thorney Island on the

south coast of England. The young pilot arrived on 1 June, 1941 and completed his fi rst solo on a Bristol Blenheim less than two weeks later. On 5 November, 1941, while on operations, Flight Sergeant Mackay and his crew, Observer Sergeant Thomas Hedefi ne and Wireless Operator/Air Gunner Flight Sergeant William Pearce, disappeared.

Further recent research may have answered the question of what happened to this crew. Historian Halvor Sperrbund in Norway confi rmed the following in reference to a query about 5 November, 1941, “a single twin engined aircraft attacked the German M/V ‘S/S Konsul Karl Fisser’ 5.800 BRT, escorted by a Flak ship named ‘Tornado’, tactical no. V5105. This Flottilla, named 51 Vorpostenfl ottila,

was stationed in Bergen, and their duty was convoy escort from Bergen to important convoys/ships sailing north up to Aalesund. The attack was executed approximately midway between Bergen and Aalesund towns, in the so called ‘Stadthavet’. The German Flakship V 5105 reported numerous hits on the attacking aircraft, which was seen to disappear, losing height rapidly, trailing heavy white smoke.

In my opinion, this aircraft might very well have been EE/O from 404, as the Squadron operated from Royal Air Force Sumburgh at the time, thus covering targets at ‘Stadthavet’ easily.”

Halvor goes on to mention, “I can not be quite sure of this, but I suppose we are quite near the unfortunate conclusion for these brave Canadian

airmen’s fi nal fate.”As part of the expansion

of our wartime history, we are trying to place images next to the names of those who were lost; these photos help us to do that. We thank his family for the chance to remember Flight Sergeant Garfi eld Mackay.

In June 2011, we will pay our respects to our Buffalo veterans and all members of the Herd who have served in the unit for the Canadian people for seven decades. If you are a Buffalo veteran, and would like to join us in our celebrations, please visit www.rv2011.ca.

By: Maj Chris LarsenTo Canadian and British

aircrew they were “Erks”, to the Aussies they were “Wallahs” and to others they were “Penguins” (i.e. fl ightless birds), but to all - these were the unsung heroes of the air force; the ground crew technicians.

404 Squadron was blessed to have one technician named Corporal WL Gowler, a gentleman who took the time to write in depth diary entries about his time with the Buffalo ground crew. There is no known picture of this diarist, but the picture he leaves for us of life on the Squadron is priceless. His

404 (Buffalo) Squadron’s Unsung Heroes

reminiscences start in October 1941, the early days of the unit - about the time that the Buffalos were making their first operational missions in the Bristol Blenheim. Gowler’s writings speak of boredom, fear, incredible fatigue, pride and sorrow. He speaks of his friends, such as pilot Squadron Leader PH Foster lost on operations in May 1942, as well as AC1 DM Clark and AC2 N Leitch who were killed by a marauding German Ju88 that strafed their barracks in February 1942. He wrote faithfully about ‘his pilots’ and ‘his aircraft’.

Sadly, the massive majority of what is written about the

RCAF and squadron life focuses on the aircrew, but to a man, these aircrew faithfully heaped blessings upon their technicians. This is still true today in that aircrew are acutely aware that their missions could not take place without the dedicated efforts of the technicians in whom they put their trust and thanks.

There were dangers aplenty for the Erks. For example, the following comes from the Squadron history, “A serious accident was narrowly avoided on 15 March: ‘Had a very close call today as the boys had two cannons lying out in front of ‘N’ (144) on a couple of boxes and one

went off as an RAF armourer picked it up by the breech end just as I passed the muzzles. Pretty hard on the ears and also could have had both legs blown off just above the ankles. ”

Several maintainers lost their lives walking into “airscrews” (propellers) due to inattention, fatigue, or losing focus while the aircraft taxied at night around the crowded airfi elds.

The following are ground crew members killed with 404 Squadron:

On 2 September 1941, the unit had its fi rst fatal accident when Blenheim L9394 piloted by Sergeant WE Dale crashed in a field about two miles from Castletown. “Went out of control and spun into the ground”. Along with the pilot, the gunner, Sgt EG Allen and technician, Corporal LW McKinlay, was killed.

8 January 1942, AC2 Stanley Leslie Gregory was killed when he walked into an airscrew; the accident was deemed to be the result

of an error in judgment. A moment’s inattention had cost a squadron member his life.

1 February 1942, AC1 DM Clark and AC2 N Leitch were killed by a Ju88 that strafed their barracks.

16 June 1942, AC1 “Billy” Dunbar was a passenger in a Bristol Blenheim; the pilot, and gunner were also killed in a dive during air to ground fi ring. The pilot could not pull out in time and crashed, fi nally landing about 50’ out from shore in about 8’ of water.

On 3 September 1943,

“Very bad happening today again as Frank Woolhouse was going on leave and caught a ride down to Leuchars in one of our new ‘Beaus.’ The Beaufighter TFX had no sooner left the drome than the pilot started to do some low fl ying and struck the top of a house knocking off the chimneys which broke the tail off the plane which crashed killing all three in the plane.”

On 7 September 1943, Cpl Eddie J Ferrier was killed when a propeller struck him. The accident occurred on the perimeter of the aerodrome when an aircraft turned to taxi to the dispersal area.

On 7 July 1944, Cpl RE Colwell was flying during a test fl ight in a Beaufi ghter when the aircraft lost speed over the airfi eld, rolled over on its back and crashed to earth, killing him and his pilot.

In June 2011, 404 Squadron will be celebrating its 70th birthday, along with 405, 413 and 415 Squadrons. VPI will also be celebrating its 45th anniversary. If you are a veteran of these units and would like to participate, please visit www.rv2011.ca.

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20Be especially decisive this week, Aries. Important decisions won’t settle themselves. You can ask for advice, but you ultimately have to make the choice.TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21Taurus, this an especial ly important week to stay alert. Open up your eyes and ears and be ready for all that is about to come your way.GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21Gemini, don’t allow yourself to be taken advantage of this week. Your good nature may leave you in a precarious position but get some friends to help back you up.CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22Cancer, someone seeks your advice this week but you are not around to offer it. Help the best you can when this person turns to you down the road.LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23Learn to love yourself as much as others do, Leo. Self-confi dence is something you are known to have in abundance, but for some reason it has been waning of late. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22Virgo, avoid blaming others for your situation. Some self-examination reveals you are the only one that can be held accountable. It’s time for a change.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23Libra, hold on tight to your decision-making powers this week. Some diffi cult decisions are on the horizon, but others are bound to turn up to support you.SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22Scorpio, all of the stress that has been piling up for the last several months is about to come to an end. Enjoy the respite while you can and plan a much-needed vacation.SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21Sagittarius, open your home to a family member in need this week. While it may not be the ideal situation, a measure of goodwill every now and then is good for the soul. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20Capricorn, now is the time to reciprocate for all of those favours that others have done for you. When someone close to you asks for a favour, be the fi rst to jump.AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18Aquarius, if others aren’t open to your advice, don’t persist in giving it. Take a break from offering advice and focus on your own situation if the time allows it.PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20Pisces, though you and a romantic partner are world’s apart in interests, this opposite nature is what has attracted you to each other.

Submitted by: Leona Conrick, GMFRC Volunteer Services Manager, 765-1494 local 5938 or e-mail [email protected]

In today’s busy world we often fi nd ourselves torn in many directions. Between work, children, parents, spouses , pe t s , f r iends , classes, housework, and so

much more, we often hear the expression “I wish there were more hours in the day” or “I’m just so busy”. With so many competing interests vying for your time, you may be wondering how you could possibly fi t volunteering into your life.

One big deterrent for many people is worrying about a minimum time commitment. At the Greenwood Military

Family Resource Centre there is no minimum commitment. We have some ongoing opportunities, some once-a-year opportunities, and anything in between. We send out our opportunities via email and those who are interested in that task write back to volunteer for that particular event or activity.

“OK, so I have time, but why would I want to?”

Volunteering at the GMFRC - W.I.I.F.M (what’s in it for me)?

Volunteering can be a very personally rewarding activity. Not only do you get the satisfaction of helping others, but there are many benefi ts to you as well. By volunteering at the MFRC you will have the opportunity to build your skills and experience for your resume, meet new people, and learn new things. In addition, our volunteers are invited (free of charge or at a reduced rate) to participate in workshops held at the MFRC. These workshops include Defensive Driving, Food Handling, Flower Arranging, First Aid, and many more. Simply watch the Aurora or our Quarterly Newsletter for information on upcoming workshops and call our front desk to register.

“I want to volunteer, but I don’t have anyone to look after my children.”

As a special thank you, and in recognition of the unique needs of our community, children of volunteers may attend our licensed childcare centre (during its operating hours) at no cost to the volunteer, while they are volunteering.

Do you still have concerns or questions about volunteering or how it can be benefi cial to you? If so, please call Leona Conrick, our Volunteer Services Manager at 765-1494 local 5938. If you’re ready to become a volunteer call or drop in to learn more.

Fun By The NumbersHere’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can fi gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
