Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District Water

Conservation Audit

The sweltering days of summer are here and with temperatures hovering around the triple digits, we face increasing pressure on our aquifers to meet water demands. Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District (TGRGCD) would like to ask for your help in reducing that demand on groundwater. We offer a free on-site consultation to identify problems areas that could be resulting in higher water usage to home or business owners residing within our District. Following the visit, we offer recommendations to help reduce water usage both inside and outside the home and a “goody” bag full of conservation-related items, including a hose timer, moisture meter, and low-flow showerhead. We would love to work with you on conserving our water resources and helping potentially reduce your water bill as well!

To schedule a visit, give us a call at 210-698-1155!

“What Are They Building There?”

Last month we provided information regarding two construction projects in Stone Oak. We are pleased to provide you with information regarding two more. Please remember all projects go through an approval process with our Stone Oak Architectural Review Committee to ensure they are within Stone Oak Master Plan guidelines.

Noah’s Ark Self Storage is being constructed behind Raising Cane’s chicken on Stone Oak Parkway. This facility will feature 571 interior storage units, and is expected to open in the Spring of 2014. For information, please call 830-980-8227.

Near the corner of Evans Road and Stone Oak Parkway, behind the Chase Bank and Walgreens, a one story shopping center is going in which will have multiple tenants. It is expected they will be open for business in early 2014. Additional information regarding leasing space can be obtained from John Moake at Birnbaum Property Company (349-7711).

Although ongoing construction projects can cause some inconveniences for residents, ultimately the end result is a convenience to serve us all. Please help us welcome these new businesses to the Stone Oak community.

The Second Annual “Paint the Parkway Pink” 5K run/1 mile family walk/kid’s run, will be held at the North Central Baptist Hospital on Saturday, October 19, 2013. This special event was developed to promote community wellness, health awareness, and raise funds for breast cancer research. The money raised from this event will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Foundation for breast cancer research through a restricted grant for medical research set up previously by the Women in Medicine and Law for the Cure. This organization, Women in Medicine and Law for the Cure, partnered with the North Central Baptist Hospital and other groups, vendors, and sponsors in the Stone Oak community, to provide this special event. Additional founding sponsors include the Baptist Breast Cancer, Sonterra Opthalmology, Alamo KidSports, Liz Braden Realtor, and Character Cafe. Cancer Care Centers of South Texas are the 2013 race sponsors. The North East Independent School District has joined in this event, recognizing the importance of health and wellness among their students and faculty, and allows the races to start and finish at Reagan High School.

In 2012, the inaugural event, over 800 runners, walkers, and children participated in this first “Paint The Parkway Pink” event. Dr. Jean Holt, one of the founders of Women in Medicine and Law for the Cure wants to acknowledge the event planning committee: from the Baptist Breast Center, Genetic Counselor, Kali Chatham and Resource Coordinator, Kathy Friedrichsen, Jennifer Meachum, Director of Employee Wellness for North Central Baptist Hospital, Dr. Andrea Duke, Jennifer Thompson, Liz Braden and Diane Heiman.

This is truly a family event, with the “diaper dash” run for small children and toddlers sponsored by ABCD Pediatrics, and the “kid’s run” sponsored by AlamoKidsSports. There will be a strong military presence, as well as a special honor to breast cancer survivors and wounded warriors. We send a special thanks to the neighborhoods “hosting” the run: Stone Creek, Hills of Stone Oak, Glen of Stone Oak, Las Lomas, and Champion Springs.

The organizers ultimate goal is to have enough runners and walkers in the event to qualify to “close down” Stone Oak Parkway for the course, and to raise

enough money to “close out” breast cancer. All of Stone Oak is encouraged and welcome to participate and contribute to this most worthy cause, bringing important attention to the Stone Oak community in San Antonio and surrounding areas.

Additional information is available on the “Paint the Parkway Pink” website: http://painttheparkwaypink.com/

Auto Theft and Burglary Prevention

KnOW The BASicShide1. your valuables from plain sight to avoid attracting thieves.

never hide a second set of keys in or on your car.2. Extra keys can easily be found by thieves.

Park in well-lighted areas or attended lots.3. More than half of all vehicle thefts occur at night. Auto thieves do not like witnesses and prefer unattended parking lots. If you park in an attended lot, leave only the ignition or door key.

never leave your car running, even if you’ll only be gone 4. for a minute. Vehicles are commonly stolen at convenience stores, gas stations, ATM’s, etc. Many vehicles are also stolen on cold mornings when the owner leaves the vehicle running to warm up. Leaving your key in an unattended motor vehicle is a crime in Texas.

Don’t leave the registration, title, or insurance card in 5. your car. A car thief will use these to sell your stolen car. File the title and registration at home or office, and carry your insurance card in your purse or wallet.

Park with your wheels turned toward the curb and use 6. your emergency brake. Make your car tough to tow away. Wheels should also be turned to the side in driveways and parking lots.

if you have a garage, use it.7. If you have a garage, take time to use it rather than parking outside where your vehicle is more vulnerable. Lock your garage and your vehicle doors.

Disable your vehicle when leaving it unattended for an 8. extended period. Remove the electronic ignition fuse, coil wire, or rotor distributor, or otherwise disable your vehicle any time thieves may have extended access to it.

engrave your Vehicle identification number (Vin) or 9. personal i.D. number on expensive accessories or parts. Stolen cars/parts are more easily traced when VINs have been etched on car windows, major parts, and expensive accessories.

Lock your car and take your keys.10. Approximately 50% of all vehicles stolen are left unlocked.

The nexT LeVeL Of PrOTecTiOnGet an ignition or fuel kill switch.11. Splice an inexpensive toggle switch into your ignition wire or starter to stop it from starting. The fuel kill switch cuts off the flow of fuel when the switch is off.

prevent the steering wheel from being turned properly. Gas or brake pedal locks disable the fuel and braking functions. Gearshift locks disable shifting of the transmission by locking it in place. Tire/Wheel locks wrap around the wheel and prevent the vehicle from moving. hood locks prevent the thief from gaining access to your security system and battery. An armored collar around the steering column protects the column and ignition.

Alarms13. emit a loud warning sound when the door, hood or trunk are opened. Optional sensors include glass breakage, motion tampering, and towing. Panic buttons, back-up batteries, flashing parking lights, or headlights, and automatic engine disable features are also recommended.

Vehicle tracking.14. A silent transmitter hidden in a car enables the police to track it.

BuyinG A uSeD VehicLeBe suspicious15. of any deal that seems “too good to be true”.

Title and registration.16. When buying from a private individual, make sure the title and registration match the name and address of the person selling the car. Titles and registration are frequently counterfeited. Therefore, ask to see the title before paying, and make sure it matches the registration to avoid giving the thief extra time to obtain fraudulent documents.

Question the seller17. if the registration was recently issued on an older vehicle. Be cautious of new license plates on an old car, or new plate bolts on an older plate.

Seller’s credibility.18. Ask the seller for reference about past financing and insurance on the vehicle. Verify the information with the bank, finance company, or agent. Be cautious about a seller with no fixed address, place of employment or phone number. Request to see the seller’s driver’s license or a legal identification card.

The Vehicle identification number (Vin)19. plate on the automobile’s dash should be present, secure, and have no loose rivets. The VIN plate should have original stainless steel “rosette” rivets, a hole in the middle, and not be repainted with the original factory numbers. The VIN on the dash must match the VIN on the registration, title, and federal safety inspection sticker on the driver’s door. If the VIN plate is scratched, bent or missing rivets, tampering may have occurred.

Make sure the federal safety sticker,20. located on the driver’s door and door jamb, is securely in place and none of the numbers appear to be tampered with.

Beware of a loose dashboard.21.

An excessively loose ignition switch22. may indicate tampering. Check the switch for chisel or pull marks.

Be wary of fresh paint job on a newer vehicle.23. This may indicate an attempt to change the car’s identity.

check the inspection and license plate registration 24. stickers to be sure they are current and issued by the same state.

if the seller provides you with only remade keys,25. not original manufacturer’s keys, for a newer model car, be suspicious.

Pomegranate: A Positively Pleasant PlantBy: David Abrego, Conservation Consultant, San Antonio Water System

Pomegranate has long been a symbol of love, fertility and prosperity in many civilizations. Warriors once ate it before battles because they believed it made them invincible. Perhaps they sensed that pomegranate, in fact, contained large amounts of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Native to the Middle East, pomegranate grows well in hot climates with cold winters. In fact, it’s well adapted to our climate in San Antonio. Pomegranate tolerates light frost without damage, although it may suffer significant damage if temperatures fall below 15 degrees for an extended period.

Pomegranate care is fairly simple and little maintenance is needed to provide bright, orange-red blooms throughout the warm season.

Here are a few tips to maintain pomegranate in your landscape:

Plentiful sun and summer heat encourage •more flowering, more fruit and a sweeter taste. Pomegranate may be grown in the shade, but it will flower less with smaller and less tasty fruit.Regular pruning is recommended to facilitate •harvesting the fruit. The branches bear spiny tips, so handle it carefully.Deep, infrequent watering will establish •deep, extensive roots so the tree can survive periods of drought.

If you have a sunny spot in your landscape for a plant that requires minimal watering and maintenance, try pomegranate. And as a bonus, it’ll reward you with delicious fruit.
