The News offers an extra page monthly for the use of Hinkley Point C (EdF) to keep local residents well-informed.

Editorial Welcome to our November edition.

Each month seems to see more members of our community contributing to Stogursey News. This month there are many interesting forthcoming events as well as reflections on activities just past.

The Arts Festival goes from strength to strength with many displays and exhibits. It has attracted keen interest not only from the village but much farther afield. There were comments from visitors about how lively Stogursey is. The write-up speaks for itself.

While some of us are recovering from a hectic few days there is much planned for the coming months; details in this issue.

If you are a contributor to Stogursey News, or just look forward to getting the next issue, you will find an interesting letter concerning what happens behind the scenes and how the magazine gets put together and reaches your letter box. Also the importance of getting your contributions in on time! There are exciting times ahead regarding the new village hall plans and, as usual, too many items to mention individually!

Have a jolly good read!

A Macmillan Coffee Morning was held in Shurton on Friday October 6th and raised an incredible £421.92 for the charity, which improves the

lives of everyone living with cancer by providing medical, emotional, practical, and financial support.

It was a wonderful morning spent chatting and tucking into cake – all for a good cause!

We would like to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone for their generosity in supporting the Coffee Morning.

DONATION TO THE YOUTH CLUB The Trustees of the Victory Hall are pleased to announce that an amount of £2,000 has been donated by the Fairfield Charitable Trust in order to assist the running of the Youth Club. Both the Trustees and the Youth Club members wish to express their thanks for this generous gift.

VICTORY HALL UPDATE Following several meetings with our chosen architects, we now have some approximate timings for the building of the new Victory Hall. These are as follows:

Architects’ drawings - 8 weeks Planning permission - 10 – 12 weeks Tendering - 5 weeks Build - 40 weeks

These timings are approximate and are assuming that there are no problems along the way. The chances are that there will be one or two holdups, but we have tried to ensure that they will not be too lengthy and/or complicated.

At our last meeting, we asked the architects to produce drawings and room data sheets which will show the hall layout, the room sizes and the details required for each room. When we have received these, we will be able to put them on show so that everyone can come and see what the hall will look like.

These days, the building of any structure requires far more work than was the case even 10 years ago. All eventualities have to be thought of and plans put in place to counter any possible problems (however remote they may be).

We will continue to keep everyone updated as the project progresses.

STOGURSEY WI This month’s meeting was organised by our members.

There was a talk on Tai Chi, followed by a demonstration. Each move was explained and then the members were invited to try some basic moves.

It was a good evening and has inspired some of our members. The speaker runs classes at Kilve.

Our November meeting is on November 8th. There will be a talk on Christmas Decorations and a demonstration. Come along if you would like to try your hand at making some for Christmas. It is fast approaching the festive season, come and be artistic!

Stogursey WI meet every second Wednesday in the month at St Audries Close Centre at 7.30pm.

Come along we promise you a fun evening.

Celebration happens when the mind unites with the spirit Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

We have one of the most beautiful settings in the county as our stage and gallery for the Arts Festival. From the outset we wanted to find a way to celebrate the richness of creativity that existed within our local community, encompassing all sorts of contributions and which would demonstrate a wide range of abilities across all ages.

This year’s Festival is probably the best reflection of this since we began in 2015.

Each year this project has taken us in a different direction as the Team have responded to the work and ideas of the artists, musicians and performers. We are not just celebrating our local artistic achievements, but helping educate, share and build on this rich knowledge in the work we present for visitors to look at, see and hear. This in turn continues to bring more and more people together in the village and parish, around this common focus of our Festival.

We have learnt so much this year and engaged some valuable additions to our team. We took a few risks, screening 8 films and a range of film clips in two venues. Introducing media technology in this way has not been with out its challenges and we owe a huge thanks to Patrick Coll and the Theatre Melange; without whose help, we would not have been able to show these presentations.

We accepted over 160 pieces of work, which all had to be stored and then hung. The Plinth we built saw a rolling programme of over 44 artistic/creative responses, which was a fantastic first in amongst the inspirational flower displays.

The Plinth not only displayed sculpture and painting, but it enabled a positive signpost to The School Exhibition and our Crafts Fayre, through the display of ceramics from the Raku Firing on the Gravel, wood turning, book binding and quilting, we even had someone knitting on the plinth.

Throughout the week we had musicians performing on the Plinth leading up to a fantastic evening at the Music Gala in the Victory Hall on Saturday. Performances ranged from choirs and singing groups to a folk Jazz group with a particular French flavour. The recently formed Watchet Reggae Band lifted everyone’s spirits brilliantly, taking us on to Sunday with the drumming workshop around the Plinth in the church.

Following the sound of our bell ringers from far and wide, Festival go-ers gathered for a calming and reflective service in the church on Sunday evening. After a very lively four days this was a fitting conclusion, as it included time for reflection over a bring-and-share supper.

This year we have recorded over 300 visitors to the exhibitions and sold over 150 tickets for seats across the three evening presentations. “Light Up Stogursey” was a ‘brilliant’ success and it was so good to see so many homes around the Parish taking part.

Many thanks to all our supporters. We will be having an evening to celebrate our achievements and show slides from over the past three years of Festival events in the very near future. This includes a stop frame film of the Plinth, so watch out for the posters to check the details.

News from the Stogursey Twinning Association A large group of members, friends and some very welcome newcomers met together in the Church Rooms on the evening of Friday October 6th. This was the start of the annual ‘Safari Supper’ where you join a group of four (usually) and are given cryptic clues as you go around as to the whereabouts of each course.

Here are comments we have received: “We both really enjoyed the evening. Although I have lived in the village for nearly 10 years there were a lot of people I didn't recognise and to meet new people was nice.” (Roy Hughes)

“The Safari Supper was what I am coming to understand was normal in this village: that is a core of really hard-

working committee members enabling a super-friendly participating group to enjoy a memorable evening. We had a great time, and as newcomers to the village, appreciated the opportunity to chat to new faces. You did an amazing job, thank you so much.” (Helen & Geoff Greenwood

”Thanks for a super evening, good food, good wine and most of all good company! A very pleasant introduction to the twinning association. Wait for the rubbish pun . . . safari so good!” (Tom Calvert)

And yet to come - find details of the Cheese and Wine Evening and Christmas Quiz under ‘What’s On . . . ’ or from our secretary, Karen Henson on 01278 7332727 or [email protected]

Bridgwater Choral Society Bach’s Christmas Oratorio will be performed on Saturday 2 December 2017, with full orchestra and soloists.

The December concert will mark the Society’s return to Bridgwater’s newly-restored parish church, St Mary’s, which had been closed for the last year for reordering and archeological excavation work. The church has been extensively upgraded to provide better access, lighting, and individual seating, making it a much more comfortable place for audience and choir alike to enjoy musical performances.

Anyone who thinks they might enjoy singing with the Society is advised to contact them via their website www.bridgwaterchoral.org.

Rehearsals are held at St Joseph’s School, Park Road, Bridgwater. A warm welcome is guaranteed, together with expert guidance from our Conductor and more experienced singers.

From the Post Office and back again – what a journey!

So if you want to put something into Stogursey News – maybe a Thank You or a grumble, a notice about a forthcoming event or a snippet of interesting local history - you can write it down, even the back of an envelope will do, and put it into a box in the Post Office labelled ‘Stogursey News’.

“What happens next?” you may ask. Well it gets collected by a volunteer and, even if you had neatly typed it up, it is typed up again on a computer in an easy-to-access way and forwarded to the next volunteer. Then your contribution, as well as all the other contributions which get sent directly by email to [email protected], are then formatted for font type, font size, line spacing etc.

Once the monthly deadline of 15th has passed each contribution is arranged to make the finished magazine. This is the most complicated bit and not a job for the faint-hearted! The draft magazine is then circulated to the Editorial Team, the cover is decided and it is someone’s turn to write that month’s Editorial (the sort of summary of the whole issue). The team then meet for a final proof read (and any other News business) prior to the final copy being printed at home a page at a time and compiled ready to be taken to Hinkley Point for printing. Once delivered to them it is out of our hands as this is done voluntarily and no mean feat at 690 copies every month. That’s a pile of magazines nearly a metre high!

I had to help out to collect it one time and was amazed to see the whole lot together and how the very kind woman in the Reprographics Department at Hinkley B station had to go back and forth numerous times, feeding each handful of 50 magazines through the gap in the security gate. On this occasion we loaded them onto a sack truck to save journeys to and from the back of the car. Then off home to sort into bundles of magazines from 13 to 200 to distribute to the next team of kind volunteers who put a copy through your letter box . . . And a few get left in the Post Office: Full Circle!

Well Done Everyone and Thank You! Caroline Hawkes

Meditation Group In Stogursey we have a meditation group to which all residents are welcome to join. We meet every two weeks. Meetings are free to attend. At these meetings we practise meditation. The meeting is informal - we usually undertake two meditations, sometimes they are guided (that is, someone reads a meditation) and sometimes they are silent. Both types of meditation aim to be peaceful and to support mindfulness.

Mindfulness enables us to live fully each moment of life, without being distracted by the past or the future. Mindfulness also helps to build up our power of concentration, so we can gain insight into our lives.

ARE YOU AN IT DINOSAUR? Computer Courses for the beginners

Do you feel computers are not for you that they are far too technical and if you press the wrong button you will destroy all the work you have just done or even break the computer?

If you are unemployed. 18 + and not yet retired we are looking to run a free six-week basic IT training course (2hrs a week).

The trainers know that at first it is very difficult to understand all the different functions that a computer can do, but they will take you through step by step and make sure you have mastered each point, by the end of the course I am sure that you will feel confident and be able to use your computer for day to day functions.

We need to be able to estimate how many of you would like to come to a course so that we can make arrangements.

Please contact Jill Dillamore if you are interested in the course on 01278-732521 or pop into the employment hub at the Greyhound Inn on alternative Wednesdays to have a chat with Carol, Jenny or Jill.

October 2017 Hello Readers, This month we have been working hard to create works of art for the village Art Festival. It has all been based on our topic work which has been about countries around the World. We put them on display in the School for public viewing on Friday. The hall was filled with the colourful work which included Japanese fish pictures, collages of Indian Elephants and tigers, Aboriginal art and a beautiful peacock. 3D sea creatures were hung across on strings.

Stephanie said that to paint the Japanese fish; “ We had to draw the outline of the fish in crayon first and then fill in with the paint. The paint is diluted to create the watery effect.”

Amelia wanted to talk about her elephant. “We had to cut up different types of material to stick on to the elephant. I used a gold doily to decorate the elephant’s back and make it look like a blanket.” Saul is pointing to his picture.

He also talked about the peacock created by Buckingham Palace Class. He said” I had to make lots of the feathers. I made a really long one and some of the small ones with an eye on it.” Isla was very keen to talk about her Aboriginal snake. She said “We had to put dots of paint all over to decorate it. I used a paint brush.” Isla’s dots were very neat showing her skill in controlling both the brush and the paint.

The peacock was a joint effort with all children in the class drawing the feathers. Miss Day used her artistic skills to draw the body. The use of pastels made it a very effective piece of work.

On Friday morning some of the children walked down to the church to look at the art work on display. They were just in time to listen to the Plinth talk about hedgerows and the environment.

Here the children are listening to Mike Bradbury talking about the art hung on the walls of the church. Above them hung the beautiful panels sewn by some of the very talented villagers.

The children gathered around the Plinth to listen to the talk and look at the sculptures.

The Well Dressing has been done by the children at the School for the last three years and every time has been very different. This year the flags of the World adorn the space and prayers were displayed. The Arts Festival is a great way for the children to contribute a village event and showcase their talents. It allows them to see that even in a small village such as Stogursey there are many very creative people and gives them easy access to a huge variety of art forms that they may not have access to ordinarily. Don’t forget; Firework Display at the School 6pm for 6.30pm light up BBQ and pork rolls on the night from 6pm Donation on the door.

The minimum order is 500 litres; the meters on the delivery vehicles are inaccurate below this amount. We usually get oil for 3 or 4 pence per litre less than prices quoted for individual orders. The more who use the scheme the better the price.

NB If customers write their email address on the form, I will send email reminders for future orders, notify them of the price obtained by email, and allow them to submit their orders by email. The scheme will continue to operate via Stogursey News and the Post Office. If you have any questions I can be contacted on 732191. Chris Ford

We shall meet again on November 23rd from 2.00 to 3.30 pm at the Exmoor Medical Centre in Dulverton, Fishers Mead Road (take the lift to the upstairs, straight ahead to the open door of the Meeting Room).

STOGURSEY FILM CLUB

We are hoping to start a monthly film club in Stogursey and would like your views on the matter. If we generate enough interest, this will become a regular event.

It is hoped that there will be a monthly evening film club for adults and perhaps a fortnightly film club for children on a Saturday morning. There will be a small entrance fee for both clubs.

There is a slip at the bottom of this page. Please complete it and pop it into the box marked “Stogursey Film Club” in the Post Office by Monday 30th October. Once all the slips have been collated, a decision will then be made as to whether this will be a viable event or not. More details will follow via the Stogursey News once that decision has been made. ✂——————————————————————— Please tick (✓) the box(es) below and put any comments you may have in the comments section. Once completed, please pop this slip into the appropriate box at Stogursey Post Office.

I think the Film Club for adults is a good idea

KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR ENERGY BILLS WITH A SMART METER With winter approaching, are you dreading the sound of the electricity bill coming through the letterbox? If you are lucky enough to have gas, well, that will make the same noise . . .

Saving energy means saving money, so now is a good time to get some good habits – not filling the kettle too full when you’re only making a cuppa, turning off lights and appliances when you don’t need them, or turning the central heating down a bit and putting on a cardigan. It all helps!

An easy way of seeing just how much energy you are using is to have a SMART METER installed, then you’ll see in pounds and pence just how much it costs to boil a kettle full of water! It will also mean an end to balancing on a chair to read the meter, or having a big credit balance if you pay by direct debit.

Installation is straightforward, a phone call to your energy supplier will get you an appointment for the engineer to fit the SMART METER. It takes about 2 hours, and the supply will only be cut for a short time. The meter is replaced and you get a little display unit to show you how much gas and electricity you are using in pounds and pence. The engineer will have a photo ID card, and won’t try to sell you anything – the SMART METER is FREE. You will also get a booklet of energy saving tips, to help keep your bill down. If you have gas, the engineer will also check gas appliances for safety.

Most people can have a SMART METER, even if you have a prepay key meter. There are accessible displays if you might have trouble reading the standard display unit. It doesn’t use the internet or the existing mobile phone signal. The SMART METER simply sends your meter reading to the supplier, and you get accurate bills.

To get a SMART METER, please phone your energy supplier.

If you are finding life a bit hard going at the moment, I may be able to help.

Please phone me, Izzy Silvester your village agent, on 07931 018045. Leave me your name and number and I will ring you back, or e-mail me on [email protected]. I do only work part-time so it may take a day or two for me to return your call.

Thank you.

Can you tell your Old Man’s Beard from your Witches’ Whiskers? These oddly descriptive and rather cheeky names belong to some of our region’s hidden woodland treasures, the lichens.

Unsurprisingly not many of us could point them out on a woodland walk, yet the south west’s coastal and upland woods (known as Atlantic woodlands) are some of the richest places for lichens, mosses and liverworts in the British Isles.

Plantlife, with funding from the National Lottery and the support of regional partners, wants people to know more about the woodlands on their doorstep so that we can value them more and do more for their conservation.

Over the next 12 months we will be developing the ‘Building Resilience in South West Woodlands’ project and we want to hear from the people who live near these woods, work in or visit the area. Let us know what you think about the woodlands of Dartmoor, Exmoor, North Devon, North Cornwall and the Quantock Hills. Tell us what activities you would like to get involved with. To do this go to www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/BRCommunities

Now back to those beards and whiskers . . . On your next woodland walk have a look into the branches of hawthorn, oak, ash and birch trees to see if you can find either of these lichens. Both are nationally fairly rare but can be abundant in some of the south west’s older native woodlands as they prefer to live in the clean, light and damp conditions they provide.

Witches’ Whiskers (Usnea florida) With its huge hairy wart-like discs, this grey-green lichen can’t be mistaken for any other. The discs are the fruits of the lichen and can grow up to 1cm across although they can be much smaller.

Old Man’s Beard (Usnea species) Sometimes sticking up on branches and sometimes dangling from them in clumps, these ‘usnea’ lichens are made up of thin, round, grey-green threads and are reminiscent of a tangled beard.

Stogursey Parish Lengths-man

The Lengthsman (employed by Greenslades) has been working in the parish for the last four months carrying out various tasks, however it has been mainly grass cutting, as the Council only has funding for 16 hours per week, therefore tasks like gulley clearing have not taken priority. It is intended to clear the area of vegetation by St Andrews Well and around the church before the Arts Festival. They will also be asked to work into November scraping the kerbs of soil in the village ready for spraying in the spring. The services of Greenslades will be retained for 2018 and the Parish Council will reconsider the contract at the end of next year.

Members of the parish have expressed concern about the amount of debris caused by the farming community – the Parish Council wish to remind the farming community of their duty of care and their responsibilities to the wider community. Owners are requested to be considerate driving around the parish, taking care not to destroy verges. Please also take care not to overload trailers which may help to reduce any loose debris (hay/straw/wheat etc) being left behind, and are asked to clear up any loose debris and not leave it for others to clear up. Excess waste, including cow and sheep manure, is being pushed/washed into ditches, generating the growth of even more weeds and which incurs additional cost (to the council – and ultimately added to the precept).

The Pound

The mortar has been replaced and the weeds removed by Jim Ward and Cllr Sue Jones, and the Pound is looking much tidier - the Parish Council expressed its thanks and appreciation to them both for the work they have completed. The Parish Council are liaising with the PCC (Parochial Church Council) about the repairs to the outside wall of the Church Rooms.

Once the repairs have been completed The Pound will be available for use by any resident that wishes to use it, until then it will remain locked. Residents are welcome to attend the Public Forum which precedes the Parish Council meetings, held on the second Tuesday of any month, if you have any questions, comments or queries. Or you can contact the Parish Clerk direct on the contact number/email below.

S106 funding – Recreational facilities in or around Burgage Road

Progress on the proposed work (toddler play equipment, picnic tables/benches and access path) in the BRPA is continuing. The issues relating to the Licence for Works have been resolved and it is expected that the contractors will be engaged within the next few weeks. . Defibrillator

The Parish Council have agreed to fund a defibrillator package for the parish provided by South West Ambulance Service which will include a lockable cabinet and training. The defibrillator will be located on the wall between the village shop and Stogursey Motors – thank you to the owners for agreeing to the siting. Awareness training for the use of the Defibrillator will be provided for all members of the parish that wish to be involved.

THE NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING WILL BE ON TUESDAY 14 NOVEMBER 2017.

I look forward to hearing from you on any issues you wish to discuss. My phone number is 01278 653824 or you can e-mail me at [email protected]

APPLICATION FOR NON-MATERIAL CHANGES TO HINKLEY POINT C (HPC) DEVELOPMENT SITE

HPC build is already a much bigger project than HPA or HPB, and has already directly affected our community in many ways. EDF Energy is carrying out consultation on their application for the following non-material changes

• The redesign of some of the permanent buildings;

• The erection of additional pipework along the underside of the temporary jetty to enable discharges from the site;

• An alteration to the alignment of the sea wall

We would urge you to attend the briefing planned for Tue 14 Nov 17 at 6.45pm (before the Parish Council meeting). It is important that you are there to listen to what EDF have to say about their proposed changes and to ensure that you continue to be aware of what is instore for us all in our community.

Matt Olley (EDF Energy Planning Officer) will be in attendance to outline the proposed application, and to answer any questions that Stogursey residents may have.
