STEWARDSHIP IN ACTION.

Today St. James tells us "Be doers of the word, not hearers only." In the care of crea-

tion, one another and ourselves are we acting as a reflection of Jesus for all who see us? Evangelization starts with what people see us do. Giving graciously of our time, talent and treasure is a first step.

Prayer for Vocations Dear Lord, I will do what you want of me, send your Holy Spirit to me: into my mind, to show me what you want of me; into my heart, to give me the determination to do it, and to do it with all

my love, with all my mind, and with all of my strength right to the end. Help me to discern if a life of ordination to the priesthood or formal consecration to a holy life is right for me. Jesus, I trust in you.

This weekend’s second collection is for Spokane Valley Partners.

Question of the Week 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time—Doers of the Word Welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. James 1:21-22 Which words of Jesus provide the most inspiration for the Christian work that you do? How do you welcome the words of Jesus into your heart?

Our quarterly Blood Drive is Sunday, September 9th. You can schedule an appointment now online at inbcsaves.org, on the clipboard in the lobby or with Cindy in the Parish office. Thank you for this gift of life!

HELP THE SEMINARIANS Knights Breakfast next Sunday, September 9th! Proceeds this month will support Bishop White Seminary and the Seminarians. Can’t stay for breakfast? Knights will be available after Mass to collect donations. Knights of Columbus will also be riding 100 miles on Sat, Sept 22 as a fund raiser for Bishop White Seminary. May God bless our priests.

We are in need of Greeters at all the Masses, especially the 5:30 Saturday and 8am Sunday. This wonderful ministry entails welcoming people coming into Mass starting about 15 minutes before Mass starts, then handing out bulletins after Mass. If you are interested, including youth, or would like more information please contact Cindy in the parish office at 926-7133 or online at [email protected]

Fr Mike will be gone Mon, 9/3 - Thurs, 9/6 for the Priest’s Retreat. There will be no daily Mass 9/4-9/6. The parish office will be closed Monday, 9/9 for Labor Day.

God can live anywhere, but He prefers your heart.

St. Joseph’s Baptism Schedule—2018 Classes: September 9 Baptism: September 16 November 11 November 18 Classes are held on Sundays, after the 10:30am Mass. Please call the parish office to register or if you have any questions, 926-7133

The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) offers a process that allows seekers to examine the Catholic faith more closely. The sessions at St. Joseph are on Tuesdays, 6:30pm. During these sessions participants ask ques-

tions, explore Catholic teachings, and discover what it means to be a Catholic Christian. If you or someone you know might be interested, please call the parish office 926-7133 or email Teresa at [email protected].

Produce Exchange The produce exchange table is set up in the gathering area. If you have extra produce you would like to share just set it on the table. Others, please take home what you can use.

“Hate Groups, Bias, and Action Steps: A Panel on Race and Ethnicity”

Wed, Sept 12th, 6:30 – 8:00pm in the Par ish Hall. Serious issues and tensions in our society today are again presenting us with the opportunity to understand the underly-ing causes of bias, ‘us versus them’ thinking, fear, and hate. The panel will be composed of speakers from local universi-ties with presentations on hate groups, implicit bias, and Catholic social teaching. Resources and representatives from local human rights and diversity organizations will be available for follow up information and opportunities. The Catholic Church teaches that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society. How do we move forward to protect human dignity and build healthy communities and create a more just society? Free and open to the public. Sponsored by St. Joseph Charity and Justice Committee. Please call or email St. Joseph parish office at 509-926-7133 or [email protected] for more information.

PK—7th Grade Begins September 16th. religioused@stjoeparish,org

WE NEED YOU! Saturday morning, September 15th we will be having a YARD CLEAN-UP DAY! We need a minimum of 18 people plus trucks/trailers to help cut branches and haul them back by the shed to be chipped. Please sign up in the gathering area, including a phone number, & mark whether you can bring a truck and/or a trailer.

Nightwalk As some of you are aware, the House of Charity is changing its hours of operation. While they will continue to provide breakfast and lunch meal service, they will no longer be open to allow groups like ours to provide an evening meal to the general patrons. However, House of Charity values our ser-vice and has offered us some alternative ways to continue our ministry. A group of us met to discuss these options, and for those of you unable to make it, we wanted to pass along the update. Effective September we will switch to just making sandwiches on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month. To be clear, at this point this means we will ONLY be making sandwiches. We will not be purchasing or providing the rest of the meal such as the chips, fruit, desserts, and drinks. To all of you that have made cookies - we can't thank you enough! - but after next week you can enjoy a bit of a break. The other change is that rather than our group going down in the evening to serve the meal, one of our group will bring the sandwiches down to House of Charity so that they can be used for lunch service. House of Charity is hoping that by us providing sandwiches, the kitchen staff will be freed up a bit to do some housekeeping. Another service option proposed was for our group to provide dinner service to those who stay/live/volunteer evenings at House of Charity. This is a modest group of about 50. For now, the St Joe's Nightwalk group decided that it would be best to adjust to the new sand-wich service first. At a later date, we may look at providing meal service to this House of Charity group. Please keep our homeless friends in your prayers ...this transition will be hardest on them. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Deacon Chalo at 263-9553, or Anna at 255-4017.

Dear friends and fellow parishioners. As our time in Spokane and this Parish draws to an end, we reflect on the many friendships and good times we’ve had with you. We’ve enjoyed the various activities and friendly interactions on Sundays over the years.. Fr. Mike, Deacon Chalo, and staff, you have all contributed to our spiritual journey here and our sense of belonging to this great Parish. We thank you for that. We are moving to the Seattle area for Pat’s work with Provi-dence. We send our love and wish you all that is good. Best, Ralph and Pat Plaster

Focus on the Family Wait No More Foster Care and Adoption Conference coming to Spokane Sept. 22. The foster care crisis in Spokane

continues to worsen. Recently, the state began housing foster children in Spokane in hotels because of a severe shortage of foster homes. The Wait No More conference is a call to the church to respond to its biblical mandates of adoption, hospi-tality and care for the lost and broken. The Spokane Father-hood Initiative (SpoFI), a local, faith-based non-profit, is a co-host of this event. The Wait No More conference includes a powerful and stirring call to families to take any of several steps to become involved. If 127 families commit to support foster care on Sept. 22, the foster care system in Spokane will be transformed! We will have flipped the list, creat-ing more foster homes than kids in need! Valley Assembly Church, 15618 E Broadway Ave, Spokane Valley, WA 99037, 10am to 2pm, Free; lunch included. Please register at www.waitnomore.org/spokane.
