The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) of Leiden University organises the 11 th International S&T Indicators Conference from 8 to 11 September 2010 at Leiden University, Leiden, the Netherlands. Science and Technology (S&T) indicators have become an increasingly important instrument for science and innovation policy, and for research management. The broad scope includes: assessment of strengths and weaknesses of a country’s science system: rankings and classification of universities; finding excellence within research; identification of emerg- ing and often interdisciplinary research themes; measuring knowledge transfer between academia and industry, and many more. All these examples illustrate the value of S&T indicators for a range of users. New challenges have appeared on the scene in recent years: the influence of Open Access on the construction of S&T indicators; new information sources; performance indicators in the social sciences and the humanities; new techniques for data-mining, mapping & visualization of patterns in ever-growing electronic resources. To move forward, we also need to reflect on and rethink the fundamentals of S&T indicators: their conceptual basis, statistical properties, consistency, explanatory power, predictive power, and their appropriateness in a multitude of user environments (benchmarking, strategic analyses, R&D management, policy debates). The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (Centrum voor Wetenschaps- en Tech-nologiestudies, CWTS) is a research institute of Leiden University. Our research area is quantitative science and technology studies, with a focus on the study of knowledge transfer and communication processes in science and technology, as well as on directly related themes such as evaluation of research performance, knowledge diffusion, and in-novation. A central methodology is bibliometric (including patents) analysis; it is used in R&D on design and construction of quantitative indicators to study the development of science and technology and on bibliometric mapping to explore fields of science and technology and to identify emerging R&D themes and their actors. CWTS uses its meth-odology in basic research and in applications, for instance evaluation purposes, often in contract work.

The Centre of Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) is housed in the Willem Einthoven Building. This building is located close to the Medical Faculty & University Hospital (LUMC) campus and close (8 minutes walking) to the Leiden Central Station (LUMC side). The historic center of Leiden is not far either (direction Leiden Central Station, city center side).

about leiden and the universityAs a place to live and work, Leiden is a bustling, friendly medium-sized city, an urban community full of life with an outward-looking, international character, particularly with its famous university, 435 years old (the oldest in the Netherlands, foundation 1575).
