What happens when five musicians who can play anything put their heads together to play great classical music, new music and new arrangements of works from composers as varied as Stravinsky and Aphex Twin? The answer is something very special and utterly unique. Stewart Copeland and Jon Kimura Parker are two artists used to breaking the mold. With three incredible collaborators, they have created a quintet that has one foot in the classical world and its other foot all over the place. As the iconic drummer of The Police, Copeland’s sound is immediately recognizable the world over. “Jackie” Parker is a pianist whose forward looking programming is matched by his incredible chops. In “Off the Score” Stewart and Jackie will explore the intersection of the notes on the page that are ‘the bible’ in the classical world, with the improvisational instincts of the rock and jazz musician. It is the rare classical musician that can improvise, as it is the rare rock musician who reads music. In this project, all of these musicians can do both! Jackie and Stewart are joined by the brilliant violinist Yoon Kwon, whose day job is in the Met Opera Orchestra; the dynamic double bassist, Marlon Martinez, a Stanley Clarke protégé; and Judd Miller, the extraordinary proponent of the Electronic Valve Instrumen) who lends a gorgeous textural element to the proceedings. Both Jon Kimura Parker and Stewart Copeland are witty and articulate artists who are eager to share their fresh ideas as they move beyond the notes on the page and perform an evening of chamber music for a new generation: propulsive, engaging, interesting and, most of all, fun!

Stewart Copeland has spent three decades in the forefront of contemporary music as a rock star, acclaimed film score writer, and composer in the disparate worlds of opera, ballet, world music and chamber music. Recruiting Sting and Andy Summers in 1977, Copeland formed The Police, a rock band that became a defining force in rock music and reunited 23 years later for a 14

month world tour whose success was a testament to the enduring popularity of the band and its music. Copeland spent twenty years as a successful film and TV composer, working for the likes of Francis Ford Coppola on Rumblefish and Oliver Stone on Wall Street. He returned to his drum kit to form Animal Logic with Stanley Clarke and Oysterhead with Trey Anastasio and Les Claypool, meanwhile finding time to win the Archie David Cup with his polo team (on a horse).

Copeland was commissioned to write a ballet for the San Francisco Ballet and his first opera, Holy Blood and the Crescent Moon for the Cleveland Opera in 1989. In April 2011 he wrote a short opera based on the Edgar Allen Poe story The Tell-Tale Heart, which premiered at the Royal Opera House in London.

Recent commissions include his score for MGM’s silent film classic, Ben-Hur which premiered at the Virginia Arts Festival and which will be performed in 2014 with The Chicago Symphony. His new percussion concerto, Poltroons in Paradise was recently performed by The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. In 2015 his new opera, The Invention of Morel will premiere at The Long Beach Opera. Awards include the keys to the city of Milan, The Chevalier of the Order of Arts & Letters (France), five Grammys and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Through it all, a sense of humor and appreciation for his utterly unique career has shone through as he has enjoyed working in a remarkable array of genres.

Jon Kimura Parker, piano

“Stunning!” These words from the Toronto Star echoed glowing reviews for Jon Kimura Parker’s CD, Rite, which includes world premiere recordings of his solo piano transcriptions of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and Petrouchka. Parker’s most recent CD Fantasy has garnered similar praise from Classical Candor: “Parker scores with another favorite recording of the year!”

A veteran of the international concert stage, Parker has performed as guest soloist in New York’s Carnegie Hall, Berlin’s Philharmonie, Tokyo’s NHK Hall, and the Sydney Opera House. He is

an Officer of The Order of Canada, his country’s highest civilian honor.

Unusually versatile, Parker is a founding member of the Montrose Trio with violinist Martin Beaver and cellist Clive Greensmith. The Washington Post’s review of their first tour proclaimed them “poised to become one of the top piano trios in the world.” This coming season, Parker debuts his new project Off The Score in a quintet with legendary Police drummer Stewart Copeland, featuring both original compositions and substantial improvisation. His YouTube channel showcases the Concerto Chat video series, with illuminating discussions of the piano concerto repertoire.

Upcoming performances include solo appearances with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. A committed educator, Parker is professor of piano at The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, and artistic advisor of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival. “Jackie” Parker studied with Edward Parker, Keiko Parker, Lee Kum-Sing, Marek Jablonski and Adele Marcus. He won the Gold Medal at the 1984 Leeds International Piano Competition.

as violin faculty at Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts.

With her debut with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Kwon began her professional career as a thirteen-year-old, and made her New York debut at age 17 at Avery Fisher Hall. Since then, she has performed extensively with major orchestras on five continents, such as the Cologne and Warsaw

Philharmonics, and the California, Cincinnati, Colorado, El Paso, Houston, Honolulu, New Jersey, New Mexico, Phoenix, St. Louis, Wichita, and Vancouver symphonies.

Her debut album was released under the RCA/Red Seal label and Yoon is also featured on the jazz quartet album Phoenix. An avid chamber musician, her festival appearances include Marlboro, Verbier, Tanglewood, Kuhmo, Rome, Aspen, La Jolla, Spoleto, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Kwon was also a member of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center II, 2006-2009. As a recitalist, she has performed in over 100 cities, and toured extensively under CAMI with her sister, pianist Min Kwon. Kwon made her Carnegie Hall recital debut in 2008.

Marlon Martinez, bass

Los Angeles based double bassist Marlon Martinez is quickly making a name for himself in both the classical and jazz worlds. While still working on his master’s degree from Colburn Conservatory of Music, he has already played in the Verbier Festival Orchestra with Charles Dutoit and Valery Gergiev on the podium and is Principal Bassist of The American Youth Symphony. He has also played for conductors Gustavo

Dudamel, James Conlon and Sir Neville Marinner.  As a jazz artist, Martinez leads his own Jazz Marlonius Quartet which plays both his own compositions as well as forward looking arrangements from the jazz masters. He has also played with Mike Garson, Josie James, and Quatuor Ébène.  Marlon has been studying with legendary bassist Stanley Clarke since the age of 15.

Judd Miller, EVI (Electric Valve Instrument)

Many people may not know of Judd Miller by name but they surely have heard his work. Miller is arguably THE top EVI player in the world. He has performed on numerous big budget movie soundtracks and with the world’s top recording artists. Miller is a renowned, leading exponent of the EVI. His expertise on the instrument and his superlative sound design from his enormous, self-created sound design library has him as first call, and one of the most popular musicians, for top run movie scores. He can be found around the world working on movies and recordings with top composers and orchestras.

His work with composers Stewart Copeland, Maurice Jarre, Danny Elfman, James Newton Howard, John Williams, James Horner, etc., can be heard on countless, well-known movie soundtracks. His programming and sound design skills are also well known in the jazz world including ongoing collaborations with such artists as the Yellowjackets, Michael Brecker, Peter Erskine, Vince Mendoza, Charlie Haden and many, many more.
