Come celebrate Maifest at our club 6-10 p.m. Friday, May 3, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 4. We’re offering German breakfast and lunch in addition to our traditional evening celebration, so there is something for everyone. If you haven’t visited our club in the last year, now is the time to come and enjoy the festivities. May is also the time to elect new board members. On behalf of our current board, we wish to thank you for your support. Many members of our board are stepping down this year. I will be stepping down to spend more time with my family and Karin and I want to do some traveling. Our club is made up of volunteers. That includes the board of directors. We need new members to run for the board. We have 300 members qualified to do so. We also now have many members qualified to be president. To qualify, you must have served on the board for one year. The club cannot run without a board, so I ask all of you to consider running for these positions. I have served on six boards and I know firsthand you will get great support and enjoy the positions. The sign-up board is in the club. I look forward to voting for you. Let’s all have a great summer. See you at the club! Steve Oldham

Member Profile: Skip Hibbert

Name: Skip Hibbert

Age: 65

Hometown: Las Vegas

Education: Blytheville (Ark.) High School

Occupation: Barber

Family: Brothers, Mark and Mike

In Las Vegas since: 1973

Club member since: 1997

Originally from Arkansas, Skip came to Las Vegas and

worked at the MGM hotel and casino setting up

conventions, then went into the casino bar business

before obtaining his master barber’s license. He’s the

king of hot peppers and teams up with Art Ruckle as

barbecue grill masters for rotisserie chicken, ribs and

haxen. And he throws a killer dart. Skip was in a dart

league when he came to the club and “kicked the

(crap)” out of the German-American Club team. Always

the ladies’ man, he was dating the club president at the

time and developed a loyal bond with the club. “I love

the people here,” he says. “This is the only bar I drink

at. My last relationship was a problem. She wanted me

to come to her bar.” Outside of the club, he enjoys

camping, fishing and golfing.

MAIFEST CELEBRATION SET FOR MAY 3-4

Join the fun and festivities at the German-American Social Club of Nevada for Maifest, the German

holiday celebrating the arrival of spring. Maifest, also known as Mayfest in the United States, has become

a popular celebration throughout the world, with major events in U.S. cities such as Chicago, Cincinnati

and Brenham, Texas, a town with heavy German ancestry. One of Maifest’s highlight activities is the

traditional dance around the decorated maibaum, or maypole.

We’ll have a variety of German food available, including bratwurst platters, the popular potato cakes

cooked by Erika with her special recipe and strudel for dessert. Of course, it wouldn’t be a party without

the great German beer selection available at the bar, along with domestics and other brands.

Music will be provided at 5 p.m. Saturday by accordion player Roger Dowling, who plays traditional

German folk tunes, followed by More and Gendel performing standard tunes from recognizable

American singers and songwriters.

Young bagpiper appreciates club support Hello everyone. Thank you all so much for letting me have my fundraiser at your club and for your generous donations. I had a goal of $100 and I passed that by more than 50 percent. Your support really means a lot to me. I hope you enjoyed the pipes.

Shawn Foles If anyone is interested in hiring a bagpiper to play at a wedding, funeral or private event, contact Shawn by email at [email protected], or call his mother, Jessica, at 702-449-0939.
