STENTON EAST LOTHIAN MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS RECORDED BY THE PARISH OF TRAPRAIN BURIAL GROUNDS SURVEY GROUP

DESCRIPTION

In the Spring of 1996, 29 folk gathered in Prestonkirk Manse, East Linton, to begin the process of surveying all the gravestones in Prestonkirk Graveyard. The spirited group of volunteers completed their task two years later, and the publication Prestonkirk, East Lothian: Monumental Inscriptions (2000) provides a lasting memorial to the 743 gravestones then standing in that place of burial. Inspired by the results, the group expressed a desire to record another graveyard, and as during this time the parish of Prestonkirk had become united with those of Stenton and Whittingehame to form the Parish of Traprain, the group chose to move on to the peaceful graveyard nestling in the shade of the pretty Gothic kirk at Whittingehame. The few remaining residents of what is the largest parish (geographically) in East Lothian joined in the task, and in 2003 Whittingehame, East Lothian: Monumental Inscriptions was published - a permanent record of the 173 gravestones lying therein, together with a further 15 in the nearby Balfour family burial ground.

With many people I share a deep interest in graveyards. The reason is not only on account of being aminister, but also because of their significance in the life of a community. It was a privilege for my wife andmyself to have lived and served during the years 1986 - 98 in the linked parishes of Prestonkirk, Stenton andWhittingehame.

The respectfully maintained area of graveyard surrounding each church is sacred ground. Each grave andmonument tells something of the story of the people who once lived and worked in the community. Anyvisitor to the stones in Stenton graveyard will find many which provide a rich source of historic interest. Each is a silent witness of days long past, as well as in more recent times. To view them can inspire in ussuch questions as: ‘What was this person like?’, ‘What did they do in their working life?’, or ‘What did theyachieve in and for this community where they lived and died?’.

The information gathered in this written record was gained from the long and patient work of the membersof the team involved in the Stenton Graveyard survey. In it can be seen 76 references to trades andprofessions once exercised in this community. This large number includes such activities as farmer andshepherd, merchant and doctor, schoolmaster and clergyman, vice-admiral and soldier, bookseller and baker. The names and dates of persons involved in such professions, as well as in many others, will remain ofcontinuing interest to this and future generations.

It is most interesting to recall that the monumental task of recording the detailed information inscribed oneach stone in each parish had its beginnings with a small group of members of Prestonkirk Church in 1996.Their initial enthusiasm was strengthened and ecouraged by Chris Tabraham. Through his directive skill andknowledge combined with the dedicated efforts of all the team members a successful conclusion to thesurvey of each graveyard has been achieved. To reach the final completion of the task in Stenton has taken10 years. From one who only had the opportunity of the briefest participation in the work at its verybeginning owing to a call to ministry in the Western Isles, I simply wish to express the warmestcongratulation to all who have given much time and energy in the preservation of an important part ofhistory in each parish.

Rev. Jim Lawson, M.A., B.D.,formerly Minister of Prestonkirk with Stenton and Whittingehame.April 2006

In the Spring of 1996, 29 folk gathered in Prestonkirk Manse, East Linton, to begin the process of surveyingall the gravestones in Prestonkirk Graveyard. The spirited group of volunteers completed their task two yearslater, and the publication Prestonkirk, East Lothian: Monumental Inscriptions (2000) provides a lastingmemorial to the 743 gravestones then standing in that place of burial.

Inspired by the results, the group expressed a desire to record another graveyard, and as during this time theparish of Prestonkirk had become united with those of Stenton and Whittingehame to form the Parish ofTraprain, the group chose to move on to the peaceful graveyard nestling in the shade of the pretty Gothickirk at Whittingehame. The few remaining residents of what is the largest parish (geographically) in EastLothian joined in the task, and in 2003 Whittingehame, East Lothian: Monumental Inscriptions waspublished - a permanent record of the 173 gravestones lying therein.

Stenton alone remained. Soon the group, ably joined by keen Stentonians, was in action with pencils andtape measures in that graveyard. The result - another 341 gravestones recorded, and another publication, thisone - Stenton, East Lothian: Monumental Inscriptions, published in 2006.

I would like to express my grateful thanks to all of them. However, a special thanks must go to SusanKinnaird, both for her minute-taking and her generous hospitality; to Allen & Meeling Whitehead forsurveying the graveyard; to Audrey Affleck and Beryl Goodall for meticulously checking every record sheet;to Evan Clark for producing the computer database and website, along with Garry Menzies for his assistancein preparing the material for publication; to David Wyllie for compiling the additional notes whichaccompany most of the inscriptions; to Gavin Rowan-Hamilton and Amanda Mitchell for photographingevery stone; and to Alex Brown for his beautiful drawing which graces the cover of this publication.

Finally, the group wishes to thank Rev. James Lawson, minister of Prestonkirk and Stenton withWhittingehame (1986-1998), whose idea it was back in 1996 to produce an ‘at-a-glance’ guide to thegravestones of Prestonkirk.
