Lessons from Mother Earth: Shadows

The Sun creates life and gives us our shadows. Within the Mi’kmaq worldview, the shadows reflect the identities, characteristics and spirits of our ancestors.

(Adapted from work by Elder Stephen Augustine, Mi’kmaq Creation Story) Source

Feel free to further explore the Mi’kmaq Creation story at: https://www.historymuseum.ca/history-hall/origins/_media/Mikmaq-Creation-Story-EN.pdf

Pollinator Palaces are places for solitary pollinators to make their nests. These insects live alone, and are naturally nomadic – meaning they don’t belong to a colony. Pollinator Palaces are a great way to attract pollinators to your family's flower or vegetable garden.

Pollinator Palace

Challenge: Build your own Pollinator Palace - an area with many little nooks and crannies for the pollinators to rest after a long days work. Use only materials you already have at your disposal. After a week share what took residence in the Palace!

Create a Sport or GameEveryone loves to play and watch sporting events! Can you create a sport, a game, or maybe an obstacle course that you and your family (maybe even your pet) can play together? What are the rules? What materials do you need? How is the winner decided?

New scientific discoveries are made daily. However, some of these concepts can be difficult for non-scientists to understand. Can you take a scientific theory or concept that interests you and create a science video, news briefing or article? Some points to consider: Where will you get your information? How do you know if it is reliable? Can you simplify the idea while still preserving the science? For inspiration, visit: https://www.sciencenewsforstudents.org/all-stories.

SCIENCE NEWS

Take your curiosity outside and connect with Mother Earth and Father Sky: Go for a walk outside with someone and notice your shadows. With chalk, outline your shadows. Pose in different ways. Notice how stretched out you are at certain times of the day and how short you are at other times. Can you figure out any patterns related to time of day and shadow length? Share your learning with someone in your household when you gather together.
