o 1999 – Coincidence? Maybe.

o 2003 – Time to take notice.

o 2007 – Time to take action.

o 2011 – Proven Pedagogy.

o2015 -- Outscores again by a bigger margin.

Why Singapore Math?

Singapore has been a top scoring nation on the TIMSS 20+ years! 13

• “ I like how my students feel successful with this program. They have confidence in their skills and ability to solve new and challenging problems.” Ms. Leclerc, Grade 3 Biddeford Primary School

• “The Math in Focus Program will accelerate the learning for our students beyond what our current program offers. Although it is rigorous, the scope and sequence makes the transitions seamless.” Mr. Budd, Grade 2 Biddeford Primary School

• “My students are able to solve difficult math problems independently because Math in Focus uses specific vocabulary within the lesson and provides several strategies that enable all students to be successful with independent work.” Kerri LeSieur, 1st grade Biddeford Primary School

• “I love the Math in Focus Program because it supports the students(and teachers) in more rigorous math thinking, and allows for more practice with traditional algorithms as well (the why and how). The program expects a lot and raises the bar, BUT provides the tools to help get you there.” Mrs. McGovern, Grade 4 Biddeford Intermediate School

Description of Grade 9 STEM Courses:

Course Name Description

STEM Science15316

This STEM Science course will delve into topics of Physics and Chemistry while also incorporating fundamentals of Math, Technology, and Engineering using an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Students will work on thematic units that culminate in a design challenge based on real-world applications.

STEM ELA11316

The English Language Arts (9) course will foster creative and purposeful thinking when approaching the literacy curriculum. This year long course will develop strategies to deepen knowledge, improve reading/writing skills, and acquire habits of learning that will serve students throughout their academic and professional careers.

STEM Connections17316

This year long course will supplement STEM Science and is co-taught with a Science and Math teacher. Students will be immersed into a learning environment where the goal is to develop original ideas and produce final projects. The focus is togrow the student’s capacity for creativity and give them the freedom to explore and investigate solutions.

STEM Innovations17416

STEM Innovations will offer students the opportunity to understand and apply knowledge and skills required to link science, technology, engineering and mathematics and apply it to solve problems. This course will maintain a focus on how engineers apply their creativity, resourcefulness, mathematical, scientific, and technical knowledge and skills in the creation or refinement of technological products and systems.
