Stem and leaf plots are a graphical format of representing quantitative data

They are similar to histograms They evolved from Arthur Bowley’s work

in early 1900s and were commonly used in the 1980s after the publication of John Tukey’s Exploratory Data Analysis(EDA) in 1972.

Introduction

Page 3: Stem and leaf plots

A Stem plot contains two columns separated by a vertical lineLeft column is the stem and the right column is the leafThe data is arranged in the ascending order

Usually the leaf contains the digit in the unit place and the stem contains all other digits

Advantages

Easy to construct Data is easily identified The data are grouped and all the original data

are shown Quickly informs about the silent features of

the data set

Page 8: Stem and leaf plots

Disadvantages of Stem Plot

Difficult with large number of observations Not very good if there are many stems with

no leaves Cannot be used for categorical data

Page 9: Stem and leaf plots

Uses an applications

Can be used to find Median Symmetry, skewness, outliers etc are easily

found Used to analyze data in sports
